They are integrated into the coil packs on the AWM motor. You'll want to start with cleaning your MAF and possible changing your coolant temp sensor. Your CTS works in conjunction with your MAF to meter A/F ratios. Most people start with cleaning their MAF. If that doesn't work then do a coolant temp sensor - click me (http://www.ecstuning.com/Audi-B5_A4-Quattro-1.8T/Search/Coolant_Temperature_Sensor/?salesrep=CArmbruster&utm_source=audizine&utm_medium=forum&utm_content=CArmbruster&utm_campaign=postreply). If that doesn't help the last stop is a replacement MAF - click me (http://www.ecstuning.com/Audi-B5_A4-Quattro-1.8T/Engine/Intake/Air_Mass_Sensor/?salesrep=CArmbruster&utm_source=audizine&utm_medium=forum&utm_content=CArmbruster&utm_campaign=postreply). Most people go in that order because MAF sensors aren't terribly inexpensive.

The ECM controls the firing of the coils on those motors.

There is no icm on the awm. Get a coder reader, and switch around coilpacks with cylinder four. If cylinder four starts to misfire after changing the coilpack than its the pack.
