View Full Version : Couple general questions about my b7 a4

I just recently bought an 07 a4 2.0t non-sline and i have a few what I consider to be pretty dumb questions. My cruise control just doesnt want to work, I have the stalk just it doesn't respond, is that not an option on the non s-lines? Could it be activated by my full version vag-com? Or is something wrong with the cruise control (I'm not getting any DTC's when I run an auto-scan)

Also does the non-sline's have DRL (daytime running lights)? I hear people talkin about them to use in conjunction with the LED headlight mod but I can't seem to get them to work, I can pull the switch I use to turn on the lights out to turn on the fog lights only when the lights are on but doesn't do anything when in the off position.

Also is there any cool options i can activate with my vag-com that usually doesn't come with the non-slines? I've heard something like activated the option to bring all 4 windows down just using your key in the door, just wondering if there is anything else.

Appreciate the help, love this forum btw, everyone seems very enthusiastic and as in love with their car as i am.

Also 1 more general question, whats the difference between coilovers and just springs? Am i correct in saying that springs will just lower your car but coilovers will lower your car and provide better/sport suspension?

I did...told me pretty much nothing about any of my questions above...I read pretty much every word of both of those stickies but did not really have the specifics I was looking for. I'm pretty sure i did read about the coilover/springs questions but i just wanted some reassurance.

How you doing
I believe you still have the factory warranty, get the cruise control fixed.
As for the DRL, I believe if you have halogen, you don't have DRL. I'm not 100% sure about this. i have bi-xenon and have DRL. Everytime I look at halogen headlights, the place where DRL goes, it looks like a highbeam.
difference between coilover/spring? Obviously look at the price difference, do some more search...

Well thanks about cruise control I figured thats what I'd need to do. I'm still a little confused about the DRL's but I'll do some more research on it and I did notice that coilover's are may more expensive, upwards of 4 times as expensive so I assume I am correct when saying that coilovers provide better suspension on control through corners and springs are strictly height change and doesn't do much for suspension.

cruise control problem is probably your clutch switch, replace it and it should work (assuming you are a manual transmission)

That is true it is a manual, shouldn't that kick out a DTC? But makes sense, thanks for the input.

As for your suspension questions... Springs themselves will only lower the car and will not improve handling. Springs paired with aftermarket shocks will lower the car and improve handling (arguably) just as well as a coilover would. The only true difference between a coilover and a spring/shock combo is that coilovers are adjustable where as the spring/shock would not be.

Just get a new cruise control switch... non-S-lines also come with xenon headlights, so if u have xenon headlights then there's a button that turns off and on the DRL... springs are cheaper, and it sits where it's gonna sit.. CO's are more expensive and adjust ride height...

Regarding your question on coilovers/springs. The thing to know is that if you decide to go with just springs, they are going to wear out your shocks much much faster than normal, especially since you have the non-sport shocks. Springs are obviously much more attractive price-wise, but if you're not planning to DIY you may end up having to pay for labor twice when the shocks inevitably wear out.

If price is a major factor in your decision, I would consider looking at a shock/spring combo. The Koni FSD/Eibach kit is a popular choice that many people can vouch for. Bilstein sport shocks w/ H&R springs are another option. Either would be a significant improvement over your stock setup, and would provide arguably similar performance to coilovers in the $1000 range (you just won't have the adjustability).
