I posted in the appropriate forum but I always get more responses here.

I was chatting with a Crutchfield advisor and was a bit confused about some of the install accessories that I need. I will post the chat log...but do any of you know what I will need to install an aftermarket stereo. Currently I have a symphony 2 non-Bose, no Navi.

Also, I want to hook up Sirius when I get a new stereo. I currently do have sirius on my stock radio. When I get the aftermarket Sirius tuner will the factory satellite antenna in the sharkfin work? I don't want to have to add an antenna.

Here is the Stereo I am considering...this is my price limit so please if you make other suggestions, stick to this limit (I def want double din to stay as stockish looking as possible)

Thanks...here is the chat log.

05/05/2010 07:11:13PM Rob: "Your vehicle has no accessory power lead at the receiver. The integration adapter provides the accessory power you will need for your new receiver.
PAC C2R-AUDI $99.99"
05/05/2010 07:11:52PM Rob: "but when I click on that it says that that product is not found (and it is pretty pricey...)"
05/05/2010 07:12:21PM Agent (Chad): "Ok. One moment...."
05/05/2010 07:13:41PM Agent (Chad): "Yes, it looks like you will need that for the installation. That will be 50% off with the purchase of the receiver."
05/05/2010 07:13:51PM Agent (Chad): "Since the receiver is over $129."
05/05/2010 07:14:47PM Rob: "What exactly is it? (what does it do and why do I need it)"
05/05/2010 07:15:31PM Agent (Chad): "It retains the factory amp and also provides the 12V accessory power."
05/05/2010 07:15:41PM Agent (Chad): "So it's necessary to be able to get the receiver to work in your system."
05/05/2010 07:16:12PM Rob: "I was planning on bypassing my amp and running the speakers off the Head unit. Would I still need it?"
05/05/2010 07:17:23PM Rob: "(this unit has more power than that stock amp anyway) That thing puts out like 5w RMS!!!!!"
05/05/2010 07:17:30PM Agent (Chad): "Yes, because you still have to have it for the 12V accessory power."
05/05/2010 07:17:47PM Agent (Chad): "As far as I know, the radio cannot be replaced without it."
05/05/2010 07:17:59PM Rob: "So there is no power wire running to the stock head unit?"
05/05/2010 07:18:22PM Agent (Chad): "Yes, that appears to be the case unfortunately."
05/05/2010 07:18:30PM Rob: "Sorry, I am confused about that..."
05/05/2010 07:18:49PM Rob: "Doesn't seem like the stock radio could work without any power going to it"
05/05/2010 07:19:06PM Agent (Chad): "I'm sure it has power. It must just get it in some kind of a strange way"
05/05/2010 07:19:17PM Agent (Chad): "You could try to install it without the adapter. But I can't guarantee it will work."
05/05/2010 07:19:37PM Rob: "A strange way?"
05/05/2010 07:19:46PM Rob: "I am going to have to research this more..."
05/05/2010 07:19:51PM Rob: "But anyway..."
05/05/2010 07:20:00PM Rob: "I have one other question."
05/05/2010 07:20:09PM Agent (Chad): "No problem. We wouldn't recommend it though if it wasn't necessary. We much prefer to send free harnesses when we can."
05/05/2010 07:20:42PM Rob: "It just seems like $50 for a harness is a bit overkill."
05/05/2010 07:21:39PM Agent (Chad): "I know where you are coming from."
05/05/2010 07:21:55PM Rob: "Anyway, my other question is this."
05/05/2010 07:22:15PM Rob: "Like I said I want to do Sirius on this stereo."
05/05/2010 07:22:37PM Agent (Chad): "Right."
05/05/2010 07:22:46PM Agent (Chad): "Do you want to go with the Clarion? Or the JVC model?"
05/05/2010 07:22:58PM Rob: "Not sure yet..."
05/05/2010 07:23:00PM Rob: "but..."
05/05/2010 07:23:12PM Rob: "with the aftermarket Sirius tuner..."
05/05/2010 07:23:47PM Agent (Chad): "For the Clarion, you will need this tuner package:"
05/05/2010 07:23:49PM Agent (Chad): "http://www.crutchfield.com/p_700SIRCLAR/Clarion-SIRIUS-Satellite-Radio-Package.html?search=700SIRCLAR&ssi=0&tp=87"
05/05/2010 07:24:03PM Rob: "would I be able to use the factory satellite antenna in my sharkfin?"
05/05/2010 07:24:14PM Agent (Chad): "And you need this for the JVC:"
05/05/2010 07:24:15PM Agent (Chad): "http://www.crutchfield.com/p_700SIRJVC1/SIRIUS-JVC-Package.html?search=700SIRJVC1&ssi=0&tp=87"
05/05/2010 07:24:33PM Rob: "I don't want to put on another antenna when I have the sharkfin there"
05/05/2010 07:24:39PM Agent (Chad): "It depends. If it uses a standard Sirius antenna connector, you can. If not, you'll need to use the antenna that comes in the package."
05/05/2010 07:24:56PM Agent (Chad): "I don't have any info on what type your vehicle uses though."
05/05/2010 07:25:21PM Rob: "Do you know where I might be able to get that info?"
05/05/2010 07:26:06PM Agent (Chad): "Not off hand to be honest. You might try our forums to see if you can find anyone with the same vehicle that may have an answer for you."
05/05/2010 07:26:12PM Agent (Chad): "http://community.crutchfield.com/forums/"
05/05/2010 07:26:20PM Rob: "I will have to do that, thank you"
05/05/2010 07:26:36PM Agent (Chad): "When you checkout, please enter my name "Chad" for your Advisor's name on the page where you enter your address information. I'd really appreciate it."
05/05/2010 07:26:41PM Agent (Chad): "Thanks and let me know if I can be of further help in the future!"
05/05/2010 07:26:46PM Rob: "thank you"
05/05/2010 07:26:52PM Rob: "I have to do a bit more research first"
05/05/2010 07:26:57PM Rob: "to see what I need"
05/05/2010 07:27:00PM Agent (Chad): "No problem."

The link you gave is just the home screen of crutchfield so i dont know what h/u you are looking at.
this is what i know:

you will need to tap into the power in the fuse box for power for the unit. so i guess the guy is right, there is no power lead in the stock harness that is usable.

The stock antenna can only be used if the connection on the antenna is the same as what it is on the aftermarket one. most likely, it is. if you do have to mount the satelite somewhere, just put it in the passenger side corner of the dash by the windshield. its only a square inch so you dont see it against a black dash.

the FM radio, in my experience will not work without buying an aftermarket antenna. even with the correct adapter, it doesnt work the way it should. just static pretty much.

I never listen to FM anyway...Never

So I do need a harness with a power lead. Is $50 expensive for that?

Is it like on my mk4 golf? There is a nut that has switched ignition that you tap into.

I don't know?

If somebody is familiar with the process of going with an aftermarket HU, can you post links to the parts I would need to make it work?

yes. very expensive. mine is just what looks to be maybe a 16ga wire tapped into one of the fuses and then the other end is connected tot he power wire on the h/u harness.

you need a fusetap, maybe 5 ft of wire, and a wire crimp thingy.

Doesn't anybody make an all in 1 harness that has all that stuff? And much cheaper than $50?
