View Full Version : Your thoughts on "puddle lights"

I did a bit of a search, and didn't find anything on this forum, but i was just wondering what everyone's thoughts are on this project i may attempt in the next couple of weeks.
I was down in Miami on south beach at my girlfriends parents condo, and we were taking a stroll past a restaurant one night when i saw what i think was a new Black Ferrari F450, and a Black Lamborghini Murcielago, and they BOTH had these LED underbody "puddle lights" as you call them.
Sorry i didn't get any pics of those two cars because I didn't have a camera on me at the time.
Now I know you can't drive with them on in Massachusetts, because it is illegal, nor do I have any intention to drive with them on. They are merely a replacement for the door puddle light, and they have a nice luxurious look to them. well, on both of those cars they looked good. what do you guys think? I don't have any good pictures of how i want to do it, but i have some to give you an idea what i am talking about.
I am planning on doing a soft white color for all of the LEDs, except for the one closest to the front wheel i was going to do amber. this is how the Ferrari had them set up, and it looked factory to me.
So the idea is, they come on when you open the door. Or if you have the come home feature they would stay on with that. I personally don't have that feature..
What do you think? Haters welcomed[:D]

idk if i'd go to the trouble man.. kinda pointless/ricey... but its ur car
well, i personally thinks its ricey. its basically the same as putting neon underglow on our cars.
but as the saying goes, to each his own.
if you do do it, make a build thread, we all like looking at those [:D]
EDIT- what is the "come home" feature?

Why not replace the stock door one with some LEDs. Or you can get some big tubes of neon and duct-tape them to the bottom of your side skirt and be really bad ass.

I'm not trying to hate but most of the cars that are way too overdone (even on Audizine *cough S5*) are from Miami or Los Angles.

sorry if i called it the wrong thing. the feature where your foglights stay on for like 20 seconds or something after you get out of the car? someone can correct me on this

Just because they're on a expensive car doesn't mean they aren't rice. There are people that fuck up their 200k+ cars all the time with dumb shit that doesn't belong on it.

i personally do not like it, but I am always supportive of new mods. I did consider something similar, but havent had the time to do anything towards it.
I have not seen this on a lambo, any pics of this?
i take back what i said about it being ricey. but i dont like it or hate it.
to be honest, the only way we will know if it looks good or not is to actually see it on the car.

I think they look good on VIP cars, since thats where this theme came from. IMO, I dont think it works on any Audi 'cept an A8 that fully done up

I have no problem with them as long as they only come on when the door opens

Door handles are another option, more low key IMO.... interesting though, definitely make a build thread if you're going to do it.

I appreciate all the comments.
Sorry i do not have any other pictures other than the ones i posted, i've been searching around everywhere.
Yes, they would only come on when you use key fob to get in, or opening the door to get out. this would be a plus with the key fob, because the factory puddle lights only help you when you open the door getting out.
And yeah, it is a "VIP" feature, so i see what you mean by it probably looking better on a larger classier car.

Someone should really figure out how to do one of these projects on a b7... the illuminating door handles are awesome on my buddies '10 bmw 3 series.

If I drove a Ferrari F450 with dumb neon lights from Street Glow, I don't think anyone would say my lights are stupid unless they drove a Ferrari F450. However, I'm in an A4, puddle lights throws me in the same category as a Honda Civic.
But door handle lights does sound very good.

ummm, i would still say something even if you had tht ferrari f450, but that is just me.
I could care less what car you drive, if it looks retarded I am going to laugh. But at the end of the day, you would have a ferrari and I would have an audi.

have none of you honestly ever heard of Brabus?
those LED puddle lights that surround the car are their thing
totally Anti-Rice just so you all know...
i would never do it to my car but its part of Brabus' kit...

I feel like I need to see it on our cars to make a decision
I'm on the fence on this one. It does look ricey, but I do like the BMW handle lights, but more for convenience and visibility. Having 5 lights is a little excessive and being on an A4 or even an S4 seems like it's just a mod to get people's attention, which is something I wouldn't want to portray. It's one thing to make an aesthetic improvement ie led license plate lights, but to add UFO type lights, even for when the car is just parked seems like a lot of trouble for little gain and again just a "showy" mod. I guess what I'm trying to say it it looks like you are trying too hard. Like someone else said if it came with the car like the Brabus or if they started doing it on the A6 or A8 that's fine, but on the A4/S4 it's just too much.
Again though, I think they look cool, I just wouldn't want to spend time/effort/money on something like that.

They should come on only when u are entering or exiting the cabin. i.e. function only as puddle lights.
else...its 2010, not 2001 FnF days. Even the Civic guys don't do it any more !!

If you could pull off something like the lights made a giant Audi ring pattern instead of little globs, it would be worthy of a unique mod. Otherwise save your money, and treat Randy to lunch, he is broke as shit ya know. [:p]

I like. . . but only as the come home feature, or when you open your door - and as long as they are distinct circles. . .

That is a pretty interesting idea. the 4 circles that is.
and btw i was just pondering this idea, seeing what peoples thoughts were. a lot of people on here seem to have troubles reading fully into what i was saying. everyone keeps getting the idea that im trying to do an underglow kit which is NOT what i was shooting for. i think underglow is a little flaming myself...
this is PURELY for an upgrade to the stock puddle lights if i were to purchase new votex side skirts. why not install simple cheap LED's while i'm at it.
and sorry dude, i know what it is like to be broke as shit. I put quite a few duccats down on the car to keep the payments down. but if i hit the lotto then DEAL. haha

Actually pretty classy. I will do it as my next mod but I am going to put them on the front and back instead of the sides. So basically light up under each bumper. Do they have ones that flash or strobe?

I've always wanted to change out the lights embedded in the bottom and side of our doors with something really bright/unique. Anyone know how to get to those bulbs?
Berlioz - google for interior led kits then buy one or just for the doors.

Here's a guide I found for accessing the puddle lights: http://www.audi-sport.net/xf/threads/retro-fit-warning-puddle-lights-a4-b7-salon-how-to.138473/
It looks really involved for those small little lights. Probably not on my mods list any more.

I have no clue why someone would do it that way when you can just unclip them from the bottom. Takes 5 min to change all 4.

I was thinking that same thing. I also think something on the bottom of the side mirror that lights up the ground would look better and power source would be there already) unless that is ignition controlled) but wouldn't light up the back, but Eff passengers. Bumming around in my whip yo.

Revive because I'm always late. I like the way they look. I picked up a set before h2o but didn't put em on due to time and honestly I wasn't convinced they would look good on our cars. Eventually I said screw it. Some dude was selling his new set for $20 so I thought If I don't like them, then I'll rip them off and loose $20 I could have spent on like a key chain or stickers or some scene points. Ya know...something cool like that lol. Mine will be completed tonight. I'll post pics once I have a little bit of time to take some.
