Where is the Coolant Temp Sensor on a 01 1.8T? I cannot find it.

I have a replacement in my hand and the sensor is no where to be seen. There are two write-up out there, and the sensor is NOT in the place that they state...most likely because I am a 01 and both of the write ups where 99.

edit: Post #6 confirms success.

Back of the head. Can't miss it. You probably have crap to remove that's in your way of seeing it.

I just spent 10 min looking at the back of the head. Is there some sort of rubber boot covering it, causing me to miss it? What does it physically plug into?

When looking behind the head: EVAP Canister, breather tubes, one plug going into metal tube that goes into head. Doesn't look like anything out of the manuals or write-ups.

You can only see a hint of green, so yes it's covered. See this DIY:

http://www.audiworld.com/tech/eng.html
then scroll down to "Coolant Sensor Replacement (B6 1.8t)". It's in the same location for the 01.

wham, bam thank you maim.
What a bitch to get at.

For anyone who digs this thread up in hopes of tips:
-when inserting ECT back into its "slot", use a long-screw driver and push down on it to make sure that the sensor is seated. This is because you have no idea whether that clip is holding the sensor in or just in by itself - and then you'll have coolant everywhere 5 miles down the road. Didn't happen to me but I could see it happening.

Good to hear! Mine has not leaked since the installation - so it must be in :)
