Hi,

Because some of you have purchased the OEM Side Skirts, you will find attached a DIY

Tools = Generic
Difficulty = 3
Time = 1.5 hrs per side
Manpower = 2 souls for final install

First, remove the door blades from the front and rear door. There are 2 screws holding them in place, front and aft of each door.
AFT

Front
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c395/fly300kts/Votex%20Skirts/P02.jpg

Using a flat screwdriver and starting by one end, lift and pull towards the outside of the car, the doorstep rubber trim
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c395/fly300kts/Votex%20Skirts/P03.jpg

Remove the 2 screws on the front wheel well
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c395/fly300kts/Votex%20Skirts/P04.jpg

Remove the 2 screws on the rear wheel well. Remove also the trim under the chassis; you will need to modify it later. Remove it completely!
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c395/fly300kts/Votex%20Skirts/P05.jpg

Now remove the wagon of screws on top and bottom of the existing skirt.
Don’t forget this one hiding behind the front door
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c395/fly300kts/Votex%20Skirts/P06.jpg

Bottom
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c395/fly300kts/Votex%20Skirts/P07.jpg

Skirt removed
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c395/fly300kts/Votex%20Skirts/P08.jpg

Clean really well the areas covered by the old skirt, I used MEK.

My kit was manufactured in 2006 and I was not happy by the stickiness of the tape already installed. I decided to remove it, and after a little trip to home Depot, I bought a brand new roll of 3M tape, double sided and really sticky.

Old tape
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c395/fly300kts/Votex%20Skirts/P09.jpg
Once the old one is removed, clean the area with MEK. CAREFUL NOT TO TOUCH THE FRESH PAINT!!!!
Install the new tape and respect the cut off areas.
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c395/fly300kts/Votex%20Skirts/P10.jpg

On the rear corners, my set had masking tape on them. Peel it off, clean with MEK and install a piece of tape on each cut off areas of the skirts

Cut off areas

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c395/fly300kts/Votex%20Skirts/P12.jpg

Now with the tape installed
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c395/fly300kts/Votex%20Skirts/P13.jpg

Equip and install the 3 brackets
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c395/fly300kts/Votex%20Skirts/P14.jpg

Equip the new rear bracket provided with the 3 rapid nuts and install on the car.
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c395/fly300kts/Votex%20Skirts/P15.jpg

Installed
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c395/fly300kts/Votex%20Skirts/P16.jpg

This is when you need to call your Friend: Peel off the protective side of the tape on the entire skirt. Starting from the back, present the skirt and install the upper screw on the rear bracket while your Friend is holding the front part of the skirt away from the chassis

Top screw installed
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c395/fly300kts/Votex%20Skirts/P17.jpg

Go to the front and clip the skirt to the chassis. With a clean rag, press firmly on the entire length of the doorstep and the result should look like this
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c395/fly300kts/Votex%20Skirts/P18.jpg

With a razor blade, cut the rear trim as follow because it will not longer fit inside the new skirt
Cut off
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c395/fly300kts/Votex%20Skirts/P19.jpg

Installed
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c395/fly300kts/Votex%20Skirts/P20.jpg

For the front wheel well, you will note that now, the skirt goes on top of the plastic well while it was under before. This is why you need to use now the long screws provided.

Reuse also the same screws to secure the 3 brackets under the chassis to the car.

One side done, one to go.

Pictures of the car will come later...after a good bath [:D]

Very nice! Cant wait to see finished install. You are a Jedi in the World of Audizine. LOLOL :-) Would be cool if ya had comparison pics of before and after of a side view of the car. I still cant tell from all the pics I have seen all over the web just how much lower thse things go than the original side skirts. If they look good I might buy a pair and keep them till I want to put them on later. My local Audi dealer still has a set. :-)

Once more really helpful Phil. Thanks again for the input.
Are you running S4 Door blades, or S-line ones...?

I am thinking of going with S4 ones so just asking, thanks.

Here is an old picture of my car.
The skirts are about 1/2 inch lower than original, but still above any components under chassis

I do prep and paint myself. I just borrow the paint both where I work. Base + clear cost me for a pint: $140. But I have a lot left for the rear DTM bumper once I get it

Yes, it's really cheap and this price include the 2 skirts primed, all the hardware, the 6 side brackets and the 2 rear ones.
Not sure why they dumped the price but for your information, I have been really lucky that my Dealer had a set in stock so if I were you, I would hurry up because this Discount, is well known in the Cummunity

BUT hmmmm. This was my concern with these. I think anything other than the non-sline door blades look a little funky. Which kind of makes sense as the votex kit was molded for a non-sline car. Phil do you still have your stock blades? If so maybe slap a side on to compare?

nice DIY, but i don't see a huge difference....

S line door blades are hiding the skirts. With stock blades, the effect is very RS4-like, especially in person.

If you look at a side shot of an S line or S4, the lower definition of the body (and front valence lip) is at the bottom of the doors. With DTM, Votex, and RS4, the line is shifted to below the doors, making the car appear lower and more aggressive.

Mixing the two (door blades plus skirts) just looks confused, IMHO. But hey, whatever makes people happy, I guess.

Nice DIY- way better than the included instructions...

Yup exactly the same.... Hmmm I have a decision to make. I have S4 door blades, and still have the stock OEM blades. My Votex skirts are not in yet. But I think either not use the votex skirts, and keep with the S4 blades. Or sell the S4 blades and put the OEM ones on with the votex skirts.

fly300kts
03-16-2010, 12:29 PM
Or you compromise and get Sline blades with skirts. I think the S4 blades will be too aggressive and will way out the skirts

Phil. I briefly look at mine. And something that struck me. I use a low profile floor jack, with a hockey puck on it and jack up from the pinch weld. Are the skirts going to cause any problems or get in the way at all?

I got mine ordered as well but won't be painting until I have the DTM rear. Do you get that from the dealer too Phil?

And Sexican, actually it looks much more aggressive to me with a wider body look below the door. I even like the S4 blades with them as well.

And for all who were debating these are Votex and they are the DTM side skirts as well, same parts. I also need these to complete my DTM conversion.

Yes, got the rear bumper from my Dealer, actually, I have to wait few days but got a nice discount. Once in my hand, I will first fill the reflectors, then paint. Ordered the 2 brackets from Genuine.
Everything should be done and installed in a week or so.

As per the jacking issue, if you click the picture you can blow it up, but the holes are cut out for a jack at the pinch weld. I don't see any issue with being able to jack the car up by them?

I paid $355 for the rear. As previously said, I ordered the inserts from Genuine for $75.
I ordered the dual exhaust to keep my oval tips. As far as the reflector, I don't think you will find a bumper who don't have them since it's a DOT required. I forgot, I ordered without parking sensors

You don't need glue. They're screwed in on both ends, screwed in from the bottom, clipped in to the car with "tabs" in the front, and then taped along the top on your sills. Unless you got a really old set with crappy tape, they'll be fine [up] Just make sure everything is super clean before you stick them down.

+4. Only the non-sline/DTM door blades look right with the DTM skirts IMO. The S-line blades aren't bad, but they hide some of that beautiful lip on the skirts, and make the whole bottom look too busy.

Actually 490 is a very good deal, I talked to 4 shops and they all wanted 400 for the bumper and 250+ for the side skirts. (btw these are with no install and already primed)

And if you use the touch up paint to paint an entire skirts, good luck getting it even

490 doesnt seem to bad. i have yet to be quoted. i think i might go the spray can route as Audi sells (from the dealer) color matched paint to VIN for 15.00 plus it comes with a clear coat. :)

I hope you are kidding [o_o]

Hey Phil,

Just wanted to say thanks for the suggestion on replacing the double sided sticky tape. I second that.

The OEM stuff is not very tacky and relatively brittle. The new tape covers more surface area, has fresh tack, and is very easy to work with.

Heads up to others doing the DIY; refresh the double sided tape. It makes a world of difference in longterm durability. Supposedly it's the best stuff on the market right now. It's a real chore to remove the old stuff, but worth it.

Also, Audi instructions dictate that you not "put a mechanical load" meaning drive for 24 hours. Also not to wash for 48 hours. During that time the new skirts are to be Masking taped up to the closed doors. Basically making your car undriveable for 24-48 hours. That is what Audi recommends. We just taped four spots on the skirts from the bottom up on to the door sill for good measure.. Doors still useable. Half Audi directions but driveable too.

I drove my car 60 highway miles home averaging speeds of 80+. My skirts are solid. I'm gonna drive minimally over the next 24 hours if I can. And not wash for 48.

In short, the tape is a great and mandatory suggestion. Thanks again.

And I have the S-line blades but prefer the flat blades. Any Ibis wanna trade?

You welcome.
Yes, replacing the tape is almost MANDATORY
I am sure that a lot of people will be candidate to trade your blades but to be honest, I like the look with the S-line blade while the S4 blade would not work

I'm hoping I like the flat blades because then it saves me $400 or s4 ones....

Wow you guys went to town in here over the last couple of days! Nice work on the respray and mount, lines look very good from that picture. I'm a fan of the S-line blades though, why get rid of them?

And to quote everyone else, Phil - get on it!

Cheers for this DIY Phil [:)]

Fitted the Votex skirts to my S-Line today with the help of a friend. Pretty easy all in all but I'd been given two mounting kits so we got a bit confused with twice as many bits! Pleased with how they turned out. Very subtle but helps the contour flow from the bumpers front to back. Total cost was around £220 including the skirts, paint, etc.

Can more people post pics of their skirts on? I have the skirts, but still undecided on the blades. I might get some non s-line ones but not sure yet.

Also, anyone have the part #s for non s-line blades?

Cheers

I finally got mine installed today, took about an hour per side using this DIY. Thanks again Phil. My old skirts were really destroyed, I just threw them out.

Here are some pics:

http://img690.imageshack.us/img690/3531/img00155201005271524.jpg

Stuff I noted while doing the install in 80 degree weather:
-Realize you lose the weather stripping in the door jams
-The skirt is a tad less secure than the non-sline because you lose several bolts on each side
-Looks much cleaner now though
-Now you have better openings for the jack points on the pinch welds

For this price why wouldn't you get them? They would look good on anything imo. Might be sold out now though in the US...

i need to get mine done as well. the last owner used the jack on it and rubbed it into my side skirt and made a nice dig in it.....so its upsetting.

might as well - they're quite subtle so won't look too out of place with non S-Line bumpers [:)]

I have them on my non-sline and I think they look great. I plan on going DTM front and rear in the future, but for now I think they look good.

We have a very limited number available at this link (http://www.ecstuning.com/Audi-B7_A4-Quattro-2.0T/Exterior/Body/Votex_Parts/ES4544/?salesrep=CArmbruster&utm_source=audizine&utm_medium=forum&utm_content=CArmbruster&utm_campaign=postreply). I do no think these are reorder-able ever again, so if you want a set I would get on it sooner than later. I can count the number of sets left we have on my hands.

You have one less in stock! Ordered. Thanks for the revised shipping amount.

Just to add to the door blade question. I think they look nice with unpainted blades as seen on the ECS car. The contrast makes it look good. Everything painted looks too busy.
