View Full Version : Weird "creaking" noise

Seems like this thing is falling apart piece by piece haha.

Anytime I pull out of a parking spot and turn sharply it makes a creaking noise, also while braking, and sometimes just when decelerating without braking. First I thought power steering pump, then brakes were bad, but now I am thinking a bad bushing in the suspension somewhere maybe? Any thoughts?

Probably more of this in the near future [wrench]

For sure, now im thinking blown shock after driving it again...

Have you done the bounce test to test if the shock is blown?

Could be control arm bushings

I have that same problem as you...turning and braking makes that creaking sound...at first I thought is was the brakes but I'm not sure what it is either.

CV boots?

yeah I pushed on it a bit and it seemed like the drivers side had a little less resistance but may be in my mind. CV boot sounds possible

Just came across your thread.

I'm having the same exact problem and trying to figure it out. I had the dealer check it last time when I was in for service and I thought it was an issue with my PS pump. They said it was fine. I'm installing my coilovers next week and will check everything then. Hopefully I get to the bottom of this.

I was just about to post something very similar. I get everything stated above but I can make the noise just sitting still, if I pump the brakes while still it creaks as well??????

I currently have a torn (or destroyed rather) lower control arm strut bushing. Its the bushing where the fork at the bottom of the strut bolts to. It started after I bottomed out onto the sway bar and the impact tore it. I also have 85k on my car so they are a little old. Check those out. If they are bad it might even be cheaper to just buy a new LCA rather than paying the labor to press out the bushing and pressing in the new one. ECS has them OEM but they are too expensive. I believe Meyle makes OE replacements for us.

I just had all the bushings replaced at the dealer and the noise has gone away. Thanks so much for your input. I just went in and told them the symptoms and they were more than happy to replace all the bushings. They said they were in fact worn out. My dealer rocks !

My car is at the dealer right now with this same issue. I dropped it off Monday and they said they couldn't replicate the noise, went in today and had a tech ride with me to hear it. I will let them know this info. Thanks

daaaamn, SAME issue .. thanks for starting this thread OP. I get the noise over bumps, some turns and some braking, almost seems random .. did the shock check and it seems to check out there .. guessing bushings too.

I'll be going to the dealer first thing next week, my factory warranty is toast, anyone know if this will be covered under CPO warrant? What they get you for Korrect?

tried replicating it with my buddy in the car, couldn't do it either ... this is annoying, hah

Weird. I have no problem replicating the noise. I hear it every time I back out my parking spot.

I guess I spoke to soon. Checked everything out yesterday when I had my suspension out while switching to coilovers. Bushings are fine, didn't even look like the dealer replaced any. And I still have the noise. I'm thinking maybe a ball joint?

I took my car to the dealer this morning and they looked into the noise and were able to replicate, locate and fix. I'm not sure if my noise is the same as everyone's but here is my particular issue.

From Dealer notes:

"Test drove and verified. Its mostly making noise over bumps. Inspected rear suspension and it all looks fine. Found rear exhaust mounts are loose, the driver side has a missing bolt from exhaust. Repair. Replaced bolt and tightened. Inspected the rest of the exhaust system and it is okay. Road tested again and the sound is gone. Done."

Like I said, not sure if this the same sound everyone is experiencing but might be worth checking out (or having your local dealer).

Yes thread revival, just seeing if anyone has fixed it. Checked exhaust bolts and all are snug. Seems to only do it under weather changes, well at least that's when it's very noticeable. Only thing I can think of is bushings grease or something, makes me feel like I'm driving a very expensive hooptie whenever I brake or turn haha

Reviving my dead thread due to still no solution on this but was looking through a couple of the b5 forums and it seems that reinforcing the strut bar fixed it for a lot of people. But from what I hear there are already built in strut tower braces in our cars so that may be a fail. They are pretty cheap so I may try it out, make my engine bay look cooler too I guess? Anyways they were saying it was due to the chassis flexing that causes the creaking, worth a shot I guess. I'll report back.

Yes I know 3 years called and wants their thread back.
