A guy on one of the other forums put a $80 ebay fmic with a universal pipe kit on his B5 A4 a few years ago, and it is still performing great. I believe it's a big turbo now. I'm usually not a fan of buying Chinese crap on ebay, but I've witnessed flow testing personally that has proven these cheapo junk intercoolers perform just as well as spearco cores for less than 1/10 the price. And the boost brothers is supposed to be one of the best budget intercoolers on the market. I have an ebay special that is going on my car. I'm more about functionality over paying 900 for a name when i have seen proof that they perform the same when it comes down to it. If I ever went with a turbo bigger than a 2871 though, I would buy a real fmic. Its just not worth it on a K03 or K04--or a Gt2x for that matter.

In the spring I have APR Stage 3+ :) kinda planning for the future.

It's not about the performance. Knock offs of anything routinely perform almost to the level of the name brand. But those name brands are usually made with higher quality materials that (on average) will last longer. Additionally, they usually come with fantastic warranties, whereas most ebay special deals come with nothing.

I don't want to be the one to say I told you so, but you usually get what you pay for. If you're on a strict budget (and don't have a BAT) then you really could just hold off on an FMIC for a while. Stock turbos don't need a front-mount, I'm getting by without one. And that way, you can save your money for later when you upgrade your turbo and actually need one (and can afford a more reliable one). [up]

EDIT

If you've got the money to do APR 3 then you shouldn't have to skimp on the FMIC?

What about Mishimoto cores or JDM? Anyone heard about their universal kits?

you're going to want a good core then. sure a low density chinese crap core will work well on a chipped k03 setup. but for a BT you need a quality high density core. this is not something to skimp out on. high IAT's will kill your power more than anything else.

im running this on my gt28rs, and even at high altitiude and 22psi it performs amazing!

I didn't realize you were going Stage 3 .. You might as well dish the money in for a Racetec. You can find used for $600 and it will fit behind the stock bumper without any trimming. No headaches, No hassle.

I have a Precision 600hp core for the stage 3 but I'm more interested in the pipes.

S4 Bumper^^

So you have a Precision 600hp core already?!?! So why post up those cheap intercooler setups? You can buy universal piping kit and call it a day. And do you have the S4 bumper?

I have been running an ebay core when i was K03 and now that I am gt2871. I ran a small core when I was stock turbo and now that I am big turbo I run a bigger Ebay core with universal piping kit. I think the bigger core I have is about 10" tall and 2.5" thick.

I'm just going to get a racetec kit and call it a day when my turn comes around. Eventually throw a Stage I meth kit.

Racetec is good for a k03/4 setup. but will be shit-tastic on a BT setup.

how does no one realize this?

I dont know, I guess bc its an older b5 anything will work well..

All those ebay cores are tube and fin not bar and plate anyways. A FMIC is not something to skimp on. Get a garrett core and a ebay piping kit with T clamps custom made for less than a kit

will the universal piping kit from ebay bolt right in? Or would you need to fab it up?

It'll get you close. Its quite simple when putting the plumbing together. Just be sure to have the core properly secured before getting crazy on the plumbing.

I have made my kit from ebay core and piping wiht t-bolt clamps (a must) and with my GT2871R turbo my IATs are still very low. Could they be lower with a high-price core? Probably. Would there be a huge difference between the two cores in terms of power from the car? I highly doubt it. My car was dyno tuned and even with the low cooling it was getting from the fan in front of it the IATs still remained relatively low, well below 40C. I say go for the ebay kit and when you max out its capabilities just sell it and buy a brand name kit.

I have this one and it works great with my ko4 and the quality was really good. Only thing i would recomend would be to get tbolt clamps as they dont come with it.

The Gen III? Explain?
I've been doing a bit of searching and logs on turbos bigger than K04s suggest otherwise with this intercooler.

I can tell you that the race-tec heat soaks like a mutha on my 30R set up after 2 pulls on the dyno. It was okay on an eliminator 2871r set up with very little timing pull back in the day.
I'll be going with a percision 600hp core or similar in the next 2 weeks or so.
On that note, I will be parting with the race-tec core and cold side pipes with an apr tb transition hose here in the next 3 weeks.
it has a 1/8 npt hole for water meth nozzle just post ic but I can seal it up if you want. I guess pm me for more info. It will be sold with all the couplers and clams you will need. The only thing you will need is to make a hot side charge pipe from the turbo to the ic.
