Hey All,

I just purchased my first Audi. 2006 A4 2.0T Quattro 6-Speed. 55,000K. Brilliant Black on Black. Premium Sport Package.

I've noticed that when it idles, it kinda sounds like it's a diesel engine. It's not as quiet as I'd think it should be. lol.

Is this normal?

Thanks all!

Phil

The valve train is pretty noisy on the 2.0Ts and the 1.8Ts.

I think I know what you are talking about and yes it is normal, though I've never thought of relating it to a diesel motor. I think this is pretty normal for the 2.0T in the B7. Mine appears to have a rough idle of sorts, but goes away once you get going.

BTW... Congrats on the new Audi!! I got mine almost a month ago and have been loving it ever since. In fact, there were two other 2.0T B7's on the lot and I made the dealer start them for me so I could see that was the normal idle for them.

Fortunately they don't sound like that inside the car, it sounds good in fact...

yeah, our 2.0T engines sound like diesels, there have been a few posts around here regarding this.

Shame they don't get the fuel economy of diesels. 30MPG isn't too bad though.

THanks everyone. I have heard a couple others, and they do have that same type of sound. But I guess since I just bought mine, I'm a bit more paranoid and think it could be a bigger issue. But it kinda sounds like there is a little "hiss" in it. Almost like a leak. (or maybe its just the paranoia). I just took it in for its 55k maintenance, (I still have warranty until end of March), and they say there aren't any issues.

Otherwise, I love it!

If I do plan on chipping it, any recommendations? And also, should I get one of those Vag-Com cables? Is that what they use at Audi to diagnose issues?

Thanks,

Phil...

there are many many threads on the different chips... everyone is a fanboy for their respective tuning company, so my suggestion is to go with the one that's closet to you... and most have trial software that gives you 6 hours of drive time to see how it feels for free. I have APR (http://goapr.com/) and love it... amazing diff from stock.. others have revo, giac-x, unitronic, etc etc... search and you'll find all you need.

As for the VagCom... yes that's what is used to diagnose issues. Not completely necessary, but nice to have around! You can also reprogram to have your key fob control the windows/sunroof open & close, turn off the annoying seatbelt chime, turn off running lights if you plan to clear corner your headlights... etc.

tons of info on the boards, so search and you shall find your answers!

Back on the sound question. It is normal to have a small diesel sound because of FSI pump but the sound can increase if you have a bad cam follower. Get that inspected ASAP!

Both my 2.0 liter turbo motors sound the same ** one is a Nissan that never came in the states and the other is the BPG VAG motor. They both have a distinct ticking noise that you know what it is when you hear it. Just think that is what most all longitudinal mounted 2.0 turbo motors sound like. They do have some valve train noise that tends to lessen up when they come to normal operating temperature.

Yeah its normal ... It's the sound of the injectors ... Ask any Audi/VW tech and they will re assure you that it is normal for the engines to sounds that way ....

our cars sound like diesels because the high pressure direct injection system. diesels use high pressure direct injection as well.. much higher pressures in diesels though. i think our 2.0t uses ~2100 psi, where the most current vw diesels run +26k psi

I know the sound you're talking about. I was worried (paranoid) too when I got mine last june [:D].

I always let the car warm up and it goes down. From what I've read you have to let the car warm up (any car in general) but especially with this one since it has the turbo.

Man I love Audi's [a4]

Congrats

Great!

Thanks again. Wow, these forums do work wonders. lol.

Okay, I'll def look at getting it chipped. I'll start the research. Does it void Audi warranty though?

And regarding the cable, which one should I grab? Should I just follow this post:

when i got my first b7 i was very turned off by the noise brought it right back to the dealer for them to tell me its working and sounding as designed... so like everyone said your good..
the APR chip i was told is stealth and untraceable by the dealer... you should find a local dealer and get a 5 hr trial for a nominal fee....

Most tuning companies offer the ability to change back to 'stock mode' for the times you go into the dealer... APR lets you do this using the cruise control stock. As long as you don't forget to go 'stock' before arriving at the dealer, you won't have anything to worry about. The trial software is supposed to be free, not for a nominal fee btw... and if you do the trial software with APR, you could do something like this:

http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php?287171-My-remote-APR-flashing-story...-2.0T-gt-2.5L-I6&highlight=remote+flashing [race] [drive] [:D] That put a big smile on my face haha.

As for the cable, follow that post, or check your regional sub-forum to see if you could meet someone who already has one that could help you VAG the car for the windows/seatbelt chime etc...

As for your profile, at the top of the window on the left under the Audizine logo you should see your login name... click it. [>_<]

The 'stickies' at the top of the B7 forum have pretty much all the info you'll need to get a grasp on your new baby... read them and learn!

You hear that metallic sound at 0.06sec? As long as you don't hear that it's all good;)

I'm going to replace my engine... Mileage: 200000km, 125000miles :P The damage is prolly caused by not enough oil changes by previous user!:(
Will cost me about 6'$ and some extra for going AWE HPFP and new 500nm clutch...

Average readout. I reset the calculator right as I left. Once I got on the highway and started moving more quickly though, it of course returned to more realistic levels.

If the noise is excessive, it could be the Cam Follower for the High Pressure fuel pump. If it is worn out (or worse) it will make a bit of extra noise. Cam Followers can fail as early as 40 or 50k miles. If left too long it can cause damage to the camshaft and fuel pump. Check out the cam follower sticky. It is something that probably ought to be checked at least every 20k or so.

EDIT: Hmm. For some reason it isn't a sticky...here we go:

Technically if you have any ECU problems or ECU related problems they can blame it on the chip and void the warranty on the engine control unit,
but i dont think it voids you whole manufacturer's warranty. I just got my car serviced at 35k and I have an APR chip and simply turned the chip back to stock and
locked it in with a password. My dealership didnt say a word about it.

Definitely get the chip though. Biggest bang for your buck and usually brings the car from 200hp to around 250hp depending on what octane mode you use. brings the torque up to 297lbs too, and the difference is like day and night from chipped to stock.

- Walky_Talky20..... I'll definitely look into that. I have a friend who works on his Corrado, so I'm sure he can give me a hand getting at the follower.

- Soul Kitchen...... okay great! After the few minutes of research.... this is already seeming to be a difficult task. Stage 1 this... Stage 3 that... 3 programs this. Lol. There is an abundance of information out there, that it is just confusing me. I'm on APR's site too. So it'll cost about $800 or so? Well, don't worry about it, I'll just keep searching. :)

- Freeflow..... For sure. Luckily they are here. Otherwise, I'd be S.O.L. Nice!! I live right next to the Rogers Center/CN Tower. I can literally throw a baseball at the Rogers Center. Yeah, it's a nice city, but I've been to Manhattan, and I'm moreof a Manhattan guy I think. Haven't been to Miami yet, but I'm sure I'd love it there too! :)

jamanrr

is that because the 1.8 turbo motor is a dinosaur compared to the 2 liter motor?

the 1.8 turbo is not FSI and has a timing chain instead of belt?

1.8T definitely has a timing belt. They are quite famous for breaking, and wrecking the top end.

But yeah, it's normal. The injectors are quite noisy.
