fairly soon i am going to be installing an aftermarket HU, it has an aux input on the front but its a PITA and an eyesore when a 3m long cable is dangling from my dash.

so what im envisioning is an out of sight aux input. i'm assuming all that would be needed would be a long 3.5 M/F cable, but i am quite the electronics noob.

is this a possible/worthwhile project? and if so, how would i go about doing it?

Might as well post up your solution so others can benefit from it [up]

...several people have been asking about aux in since sw version 0260 came out for the rns-e.

im not the smartest person when it comes to these things, but this is what i've managed to come up with:

first: the aux adapter for my specific aftermarket HU

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41T3R0VX0CL._SL500_AA280_.jpg

fed into a 3' or 6' long RCA cable

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/119WD2ENYFL._SL500_AA250_.jpg

into a pair of RCA couplers

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/212KBF2MPTL._SL500_AA150_.jpg

and then into a RCA male to 3.5mm female connector

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31G7AXL9kQL._SL500_AA280_.jpg

which would then be fitted and mounted underneath my armrest, out of sight

all of this would be hidden underneath the console

NOTE: THIS WILL BE IN A C5 A6, i can't provide a solution for anything other than my application as i dont have the technical know-how :P

What are you hooking up to the aux input? I only ask because the first picture you posted looks like the same connector I had on an aftermarket radio, but the other end plugged into my ipod. The best thing about it was that when it was plugged in it charged my ipod and I could select the song/playlist from the hu.

im going to be using a zune, sometimes an ipod, and eventually a phone

opting for the ipod interface would obviously severely limit my options
