View Full Version : Why DV install is so expensive?

Because it is fucking retarded! I helped a friend (CleverA4Name) this weekend install a Forge DV in place of his torn stock DV. Sounds easy, right? Just three bolts, you say? Fuck you! 2 hours later, a bruised eyebrow, sore fore arms, back and neck, we got it. Barely in time for me to get ready for work. Its one of the DIYs that you can't explain how to do it quickly, kind of like figuring out how to fit a lightbulb through a keyhole without breaking it. There's all kinds of dumb shit in the way, and in all honesty, the one bolt you can't see that you have to find blindly is the easiest problem. You need an extension to get the right length, but then its too long, etc., etc.

Just a little info to help the newer guys out thinking of doing this. I would pay whatever anybody would charge to get this done, no questions asked. The dumbest DIY I have ever partaken in.

Its true, I am a bartender, not a mechanic. But still, Audi engineers things in such a way that normal people should not be able to do certain things without paying an Audi mechanic to do them instead.

I got mine out. Wife put it in. Stupid huge hands. Maybe German engineers have tiny paws?

But if they have tiny hands, why do they use such huge beer glasses?

Haha it really gave me hella headache while doing this. I gave up and paid my local tuning shop to do it. The last bolt just cannot be reached whatsoever.
Colt45, try doing this yourself first :)

Dang Jim that sucks!! lol It is a PITA but i believe the forge one has a lil more stuff then a OEM one. The OEM one is just 3 bolts but a time consuming 3 bolts. If its your first time yeah it sucks.

Important part is that you got it done. I took my bumper off this weekend for the first time and it sucked!! Was a lot more work then i thought it was going to be. But i found out little tricks like its way easier to jack the car up and put it on stands and to remove the wheels so everything is easier to get to.

LMAO, dude whoever told you the forge DV was "just 3 bolts" was lying.

The new OEM revision DV was just 3 bolts, it's "plug and play"

basically i have changed the my diverter i have done it with jacks and jack stands but it is much eaiser to do with some one who has a lift as well as some one with smaller hand to fit in the tight spaces bascially its just a pain in the ass but yet very d0-able

OP -

Did you use the knuckle piece on the ratchet handle as suggested in some DIYs? Did you use ramps or jack stands? I am planning on doing this this weekend and any tips would be greatly appreciated. TIA

Don't remember where in my travels I heard this, but it's still one of my favorite quotes:

Like that old joke when the technician charges the owner USD10,000 for putting a small bolt back on a very sophisticated machine...

- but you only put one tiny bolt back there
- you're right, the bolt is only 25 cents
- so......................?
- the rest is for knowing WHICH bolt is!

Yep, used everything as suggested. Jack stands, 10" ratchet extension with knuckle joint with 4" extension. No combination of any extensions worked the same for more than one bolt. I don't know if my knuckle is cheap or broken, but for every 3/4 of a rotation, it would get stuck, so I would have to pull out (hehe) reset the knuckle and find the hole again. Nothing about the forge was difficult except the three stock bolts. I can hook up boost tubes and shit all day long, but monkey hands, I have not.

First off I want to say thanks to jim for helping me out with this and lending me his tools and garage. We had all of the right tools, car up on jacks etc. etc. and it most certainly was a PITA...When accessing the DV from under the car you are in a very awkward position (at least if you are right handed) where you have to reach up with your right hand through several wires and hoses to get to the bolt, and then with your left hand try and tighten/untighten the bolt. And Jim is right, each bolt was completely different, some needing the extension and some not needing the extension, and one that didn't work either way! In the end it was a learning experience, but honestly I cannot say that I would be able to do it any faster now then before as it is just a pain to get to those bolts. And I call bullshit on a 20 minute swap....GTFO
