View Full Version : Sub and amp recommendations?
I took my car into an audio shop to get some ideas/quotes on a sub install on my 2010 S4. I do have the B&O upgrade, but it just doesn't have enough bottom end. I don't want to be rattling other cars as I drive by, just some nice tight/deep bass. I also don't want to put in a sub box, as I need to retain my trunk space for music gear (guitars, amp, etc) that I lug around a lot.
They recommended fabricating a sub enclosure into the left corner of the trunk, and relocating the 2 devices that are currently there. Sounds good to me, just need to pick the components. They recommended a 12" Hertz HX300D sub along with an Audison LRx 1.1k amp. Is that a good combo? I've had JL Audio gear before, so I'm comfortable with that, but he said the Hertz is just as good as JL, at a lower price. I'd appreciate any advice/comments, thanks.
I've heard nothing but good things about hertz and audison, but have yet to hear any.
You should check out diamond audio as well if you have any dealers local to you.

Go with the JL Audio amp and sub still the best and only a little more. If you had JL Audio before and you put inferior new equipment you won't be happy.

Two friends and I each have had Alpine Type X's for a few years now and with a quality amp like a Alpine PDX they sounds amazing. I agree JL Audio is some of the best stuff out there as well just wanted to offer an alternative.

what are you looking for in price?
if price is not a HUGE things for you and you want QUALITY. none of that JL BS (sry im not a JL person) then look into rainbow and dynaudio
these are kind of harder to find in shops and is somewhat underground here in the states but i would run this stuff if i had the money :/
link to rainbow: http://www.rainbow-audio.de/
the subs may not look like anything special but have some of the clearest bass i have heard
http://www.dynaudio.com/eng/auto/esotec/mw182.php
-amazing sounding and CLEAR sounding sub (like all of their equipment)
if you are looking for something a little cheaper but GREAT quality all around (running one of these for competition use) look into RE audio they have great stuff.. look into an SE model, will probably give you the output and sound you are looking for
http://reaudio.com/woofers.html#goto_sex
i haven't been up on my amps lately but look into zapco amps, rainbow amps are great and also kicker makes a nice product as well..
http://www.rainbow-audio.de/ (this may put out more than you need/want but definitely nice)
http://www.zapco.com/prod/DC_Ref/DC_11001Frame.htm
if you are looking for cheaper power but still puts out a great signal.. look into a MB quart amp or hifonics (made by the same company)
hope this helps, good luck!

I've got 2 JL 12w3v2 in the rear of my c5 and love em, i have a big trunk though nad still a ton of room to store stuff in. I use an Alpine MRP-M500 amp and that does great for me, but I have Focal components and another alpine amp for those and an alpine IVA-505 for a HU so my setup is a litttle different
thanks, I'll probably get this installed in a month or two. I'll post pics once it's done.

I think you really need to know what you want out of your system. Do you want to enjoy it just loud so you can impress your neighbors? Or do you want something a little more refined and detailed. You will spend a good amount of money on both. But going loud is an easier option. By trying to go with Sound Quality, you will redo alot of your interior with optimal speaker placement or try to compensate with a lot of Sound processing. At the end it is a mixture of both. It all depends on your ear....that's why there are so many stereo companies that are the "best". Everyone perceives what sounds good differently. In my system I want it to seem like the singer is sitting on my hood and the bass nice tight and fast. I've owned zapco, mcintosh, alpine, JL, focal etc.. all that stuff is good. Hell, I've heard some crap brands that sound great if installed correctly with some amount of tuning by a good installer. That being said, I have the following.
Amplifier: Audison 5 channel
Speakers: Dynaudio seperates and morel
Woofers: (2) 10" shallow pioneers
Front stage woofer: 8" shallow earthquake
processing: audison bit one
I have been piling all this crap up for years listening to new stuff and changing it out all the time. I will eventually draw a line in the sand and finally install this crap.

I know this is an older thread but I have always run nothing but Diamond Audio but have recently stopped.. Due to the economy I heard the new cones are 1/3 thinner than before and they cut corners on some other things as well.. What use to be a quality sub is now sort of "iffy" .. It hurts to say it but I stay away from them now.. I do miss my 6 12" D6's though. RIP.. haha.
