Ended up 15.9 mpg. 85% city, 15% hwy. 6mt We'll see if it improves. I have to admit, there were a few spirited runs in there...

I'd say that's pretty good for the first miles on the car; it being winter and 85% city driving.

If you care to track your mileage info, sign up for an account on fuelly.com. Very easy site that also has a great mobile site (m.fuelly.com) if you have a smartphone.

Sounds pretty dismal to me. I guess I won't even look at mine until I have some miles on it (arriving April).

Awesome, wish I knew how to make the icon for the link display in a sig - did mine!

Interesting, my first tank was also 15.9 mpg, and I'm also 6MT.

Can't see the icon in my sig due to the vB settings here, but my worst tank (I have not been babying her) is 18.1MPG, and average is 18.9MPG across 6 tanks now. I always use Shell 92 octane (best we can get here).

Don't get too upset... I bought it last Tuesday... so it took me a week and a day to run through the tank.. that's with a new car that I was excited to drive.

I live about 5 miles from my office... so a lot of start... drive for literally 10-12mins and shut her down. Back streets, never above 45mph.

I would occasionally take it on the freeway and get her up to 80-90 real quick... then I'd be home again.

I bet it'll get better... I got to chose the gas this time (vs the dealership) and it is still winter... so we're looking at up to 10% ethanol right now..

On a side note, my B6 got about 14.6 mpg doing the same route (40k miles) and my Lexus GX470 got about 13.8mpg (30k miles).

I'll keep updating for the next few weeks, then once monthly or bi monthly. Keep a little log.

I'm averaging about 2-3 MPG less with this winter gas. [down]

I'd be about 19mpg doing the same driving. 5000 miles on car.

I'm averaging 19.1 mpg after 1700 miles freeway/city. Probably a mix between 60/40 Auto/Dynamic mode.

That is very similar to the commute that my wife has...which was during the first few tanks of gas. What I notice so far (after 4200 miles) is that the months that my wife drove, the average was about 15-16 mpg. And the months that I drove, I averaged about 18-19 mpg due to my longer commute which consists of more freeway miles.

I'm curious to see what the best achievable mileage is. On my exurban commute (average speed 35-40, lots of lights, but some stretches @ 60 mph) I can get 24 mpg in the Lexus IS350 if I'm driving for economy with moderate hypermile technique or knock it down to 19 mpg if I leave the transmission in sport mode and give it the boot whenever possible. I like the idea of getting economy on the daily drone, but having a car that will scoot when roads and traffic permit. I have the impression that most people reporting < 20 mpg with the A8 S4 are not trying to squeeze out the best mileage possible.

I currently drive a big fat infiniti fx 45 V8. I am averaging at the moment 18.63 mpg. Ordered an S4 thinking I will get better than 24 mpg on my commute. I guess I am not going to do better than my SUV?

My commute is back roads, 5 lights in 35 miles, average about 40 mph.

That looks about right. My computer was reading 1.5-2mpg more than actual. Now that I've done the VAG, it is now reading only about 0.2mpg more.

My commute is back roads, 5 lights in 35 miles, average about 40 mph.

My 2006 infiniti fx 45 and 2008 A3 are at opposite spectrum for gas mileage, and the S4 lies exactly in the middle for fuel economy. So while it is hard on gas vs. the A3, it is just as good on gas vs. my Fx.

in litres per 100k, the S4 is 12ish, the fx45 was 15ish, the A3 9.5ish

As for the curve above. II find the same type of results. The more highway driving yo0u do, the more accurate the computer is. At 28mpg it was almost exact, but at 16mpg it was off by 1mpg at least, actual being 15.

FYI my commute is 18km all done in city light traffic and I have average 14.1 L/100km (16.7 MPG) since I took delivery of my car (2800 km). My driving style is : heavy driving (35%), normal / hyper driving (65%). This was all done in winter driving with Dunlop Winter Sport 3D on 245/40/18.

Just for the sake of comparison my ML320 does 11L/100km or 21.4 MPG with almost the same pattern.

I didn't use the cpu for mpg... I used miles driven / gallons filled. So, again, since this is my first tank of gas I'm assuming they filled it to the top. No reason not to.

My commute is short and lots of lights.. I would consider this mostly a worse case scenario, 2nd probably only to a track day. That coupled with a 6mt (as I get frustrated I row through the gears harder) means I'm probably hitting the bottom of the barrel in fuel economy. You all should see much better results.

I've accepted that this car is going to get 17-19mpg in real world city/hwy mix. 2000 miles and thats my average. Semi spirited driving, but not as spirited as this car would like! :)

You can see where the past 2 tanks I have seen a marked increase in mileage. Some of this is that 3 and 4 tanks ago I was well broken in and really giving it the beans in Dynamic often. I have backed down on that, but have found that during takeoffs (much like my G35 coupe) you actually get better overall mileage with a pretty swift takeoff than if you baby the pedal to cruising speed. The car has the grunt and torque to pull rapidly to road speeds from a stop, so that you will use less gas shifting around 3K, than short shifting (with the DSG, you just give it more pedal and learn where the shift points are depending on your throttle input).

20MPG last tank with an even 50/50 hwy and city split again - up from ~18MPG

2nd Tank of gas was 16.5 mpg, much of the same driving. A little better.... ~500 miles on the car.

3rd tank of gas was 15.13 mpg. A little worse. I am having more fun with the car, and less hwy this time. Lots of short trips, etc etc. I can't imagine getting much worse than this, except on a track day or if I hammered the gas every time. ~750 miles on the car now.

I'm not using the CPU... just filling to the top, doing the math, etc.

16.8 mpg on the last tank. Driving on the highway makes a huge difference. I'm still probably at 80/20 city vs highway and all my trips are short... So I have high hopes for this car on longer trips. My B6 would never get close to 17mpg unless it was mostly highway. At 980 miles now... I won't log any more mpg unless I do a complete hwy trip (long drive to Portland and back or something)

This is about what I am seeing too. I have a trip to Coupeville tomorrow, I plan not to take the ferry, so it will be a nice drive up through Deception Pass - I'll fill up tonight on the way home and let you know how it goes ;)

Here's some data from my car over a 10 fillup period. This graph shows ave MPG from fillup and computer vs ave Speed from computer. I reset computer 2 everytime I fill up. I am seeing about 19 MPG average at 33 MPH average speed. As can be seen from the graph, I mostly do city/suburban driving. I only have one data point above 33 MPH. This is mostly 80 MPH freeway with some city driving for 54 MPH ave.

Up to ~1900 miles and I scored 17.86mpg on my last tank. It's been getting better each time... also seems that (obviously) just a little bit of highway driving really helps!

My first tank I got 18.9 with about 15% highway driving. I have an automatic with no sport diff. The auto shifts pretty quick even with spirited driving. I'm sort of optimistic that i'll get into the 20s in my second tank. How big is our gas tank? I put 15.5 gallons of 92 octane in.
