View Full Version : S4 Engine Mounts in 1.8T A4?

The engine mounts in my A4 are shot and need to be replaced ASAP. So looking online I found that B5 S4 mounts are actually cheaper than the A4 1.8T mounts, and since they are for a heavier, more powerful engine, are probably a bit stiffer. I have an S4 steering rack in my car so I know some parts are interchangable, but the parts catalog shows a different left and right mount for the A4 and only one mount for the S4 so I'm a bit uncertain.

So has anyone used S4 mounts in a 1.8T A4?

Aftermarket units are interchangeable, including the Stern, 034, and even OEM RS4 units. I don't know about the factory units. They should fit, though[confused].

Why not use this opportunity to upgrade? You can always resell them later if you want to get rid of your vehicle.

If the RS4 mounts work than logically these should too. Not only are they cheaper but they might be an upgrade if they are in fact stiffer which I will investigate once I have them in hand. They are about $40 each online for Febi brand which is a good deal if you ask me.

I would trust those Febi units on my 1.8t, seeing how they aren't designated for left or right units on the B5 S4 chasis, similar to all the other aftermarket units. I guess if you are going to go through with it, post up results[up].

I remember looking into this issue a while back. I think the 2.8L A4 mounts had the same part # in ETKA as the S4 mounts.

Same mounts practically but dont waste your time with OEM mounts.

I know 034 sells good stuff... But are they $40CAD each? :)

Did you end up installing them in your 1.8T?

No, but if RS4 mounts fit the 1.8t and the 2.7t motors, then the 2.8 mounts will fit the 1.8t with no problems.

Also, I would agree with Issam. The OEM mounts are prone to failure IMO and you would be better off doing an upgrade to 034 units.

Our Stern mounts come with a lifetime warranty, and are available in a soft or firm design. They can be rebuilt, or easily changed from one style to the other if you need to in the future.

They're a direct replacement for the cheap OE style mounts!

RS4 and S4 engine mounts will fit your 1.8T.

S4's are "stronger" than stock, and RS4's are "stronger" yet. I say "stronger" because that's not even how it should be worded, the material is more dense.

I ran 034MS Street Density mounts (all 5) and I was very happy with them b/c they're basically an OEM design, but have a different compound of material in them. I really like the design of the Sterns, but I never had a chance (or need to) work with them.

As far as transmission mounts, buy those specific to your engine/car. 1.8T and the V6 engines (2.8 or 2.7T) are NOT the same.

Thanks for the help guys.

What are the chances my transmissions mounts are shot too? Do they usually fail along with the engine mounts? I can see how they would, considering their position and how engine movement compresses them...

Trans mounts fail just as often as motor mounts. They just don't leak any fluid, so the signs aren't quite as noticeable.
Here are some B5S4 mounts which have failed.

I didn't know the engine mounts were fluid filled. I guess I have something to look for to verify that they are indeed shot.

I don't think I'll get anything other than OEM parts, but I appreciate the help (PureMS and 034 guys). I'm trying to keep the A4 as civil as possible and the vibrations would most likely get to me quickly.

Thanks.

You have a RX-7 and you're worried about a little vibration? [>_>]

Yea, they're fluid filled. Mine leaked, and I couldn't turn down the price on 034 mounts ... I think I was the first to get them on AZ. [wrench]

But yes, my hood shook a little at idle(carbon or factory). Other than that, no vibrations at all.

I have hockey pucks for engine mounts in my RX-7 and it's still smoother than what you're describing your 034 mounts to be like in your A4. Rotary engines are so smoooooooooooooooooth. And from your comment, I'm doubting that you've ever driven one or else you'd know what I was talking about [:D]

I might have found a set of RS4 mounts - so if the deal goes through, I'll be picking those up with new A4 transmission mounts.

No but labour to change them will be the same whether the mounts were $40 CAD or $4000 CAD
food for thought [;)]

True, but if I had to pay for labour, I certainly wouldn't be driving an A4. :D

I've driven one ... my friends and I were swapping a 12B into a lawnmower when our plans all of sudden had to stop.

Edit - Rotary engines are good for small things, I don't really think they belong in cars IMHO.
