Looks like Audi is reducing product support for the B5. Get these while you can because likely once stock is depleted these items will be no longer offered by Audi. I saw this happen with the Audi V8 and the C4 cars.

My CD changer came in, and it didn't come with the cartridge. I was under the assumption, that it was included in the package. If it isn't included, please state so and I will source one out. Otherwise can you reply here instead of me calling ECS to inquire; no need to call if you can reply here.

Edit: Ok, just finished doing some research and learned that you guys sent me an incorrect unit. I don't know the PN for the one I need, but it def isn't the one you guys sent me. I am sure it will work with the connector and such (well, maybe), but it is not designed for my vehicle. Here is a pic of the size of it compared to where it is supposed to be placed (the little slot under that widow maker box). You can also see how the connector is on the opposite side.
http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/ee147/seerlah/PICT0466.jpg

I am too lazy to try and find the correct part number I would need, but the unit you guys sent me is def not the correct one. It may be able to work on my vehicle, but it def was not meant for it. I would like to request a refund. Also, this is a remanufactured item and not a brand new one, which I was lead to believe. The person whom remanufactured it also did not seem to care too much about the cosmetic condition of it. The back panel was not even seated properly when they bolted (screwed) it down. I had to push it in to make it flush. The corner that was not flush with the cd changer had the screw basically bust through where the head of the screw is supposed to be seated. Anyways, I would like to request a full refund. Please PM me so we can discus this further. Or should I call ECS direct? Thanks!

These CD Changers are for cars UP TO the 1998 model year. Hopefully that aids in clearing the confusion.

There is chatter of retrofitting these in newer model cars but we have to market them as 1998 and earlier replacements.

I purchased the Symphony1 "remanufactured" and it came in stamped for an "A8" instead of for an A4/S4. The faceplate frame is different shape for an A8. I just got crafty and swapped out all the buttons/display into my old faceplate but it was a 1/2 hour I could have spent doing something else. For the price, its not a big deal but it wasn't something I expected. It works GREAT though! [wrench][wrench][wrench]
It sounds to me like VW didn't know what they had in the warhouse(s) and just dumped it off to the market cheap so they wouldn't have to mess with it and so you retailers would sort it out. Oh well, I'm happy.

I have a 00 b5, i just got my cd changer today. It said all B5's when I bought mine

Same issue as Seeriah. However I did get a 10 disk Sony cartridge with mine. My doesn't fit the space, or plug into the connecter. Both the connecter on the changer, as well as the connecer in the car are the same male 13 pin din connecters. . damn. I buy all kinds of stuff from ECS too, and never had an issue.

Definately a horrible job on the refurbishment (was also led to believe it was new). There were actually cracks in the plastic inside where the cartdige goes. I'll honestly be suprised it if even works. I did find a place that sold a 6' 13 pin cable with female ends, so I am going to attempt to hang mine in the truck under the rear deck, and hopefully it works. Otherwise I am going to throw it out into the road. I'm a little dissapoitned in the whole transaction.

The symphony radios have been no problem. The only issue we had was with the trunk mounted CD changers being for pre-facelift cars. So if you have a Symphony I already, you can get one of these replacement radios if they are applicated per your vehicle on sale with no problems. If you have a Symphony II, I'm afraid we've sold out of those.

These fit perfectly in the 2000 and up cars just as the link says in the add. I haven't heard of any fitment issues and our product specialist just assured me that the part numbers are correct for 2000 and up B5 A4s.

They may be stamped A6 because Audi used the same radio across many platforms.

While I appreciate the mentality, if we have a problem with a product we do need to sort it out, and sort him out. If he is putting this in a 2000 and we say it fits, it has got to fit! If it doesn't, we need to fix the situation.

Ok, the product specialist got back to me. You can swap the plastic trim from your A4 stereo onto the new stereo. The symphony I components are the same across both stereos, yet the trim is slightly off. There are a few screws on the back side of the trim that hold it to the unit. Simply swap those trim panels and you'll be set, the rest should bolt up fine.

We've edited the website with this information, sorry for the initial confusion.

Taken from another thread.

Follow up, I solved the problem. The issue is that the radios are different!! Apparently the same symphony 1 have slightly different face plates between the A4 and A6 versions. The version that I bought from ECS are apparently the symphony's that came on the A6, so the face plate is not only longer, but not as wide. So I got the correct one from A4/S4 and now everything fits perfectly.

Here's a pic so you can see the differences: Notice how the space between the buttons and the bottom of the face is much bigger on the A6 version of the symphony

Well that does me ZERO good as I have a 99.5 therefore dont have the trim needed to make it work. So 0-2 for ECS's "product specialist". I called earlier and spoke to Ben and he insinuated that I was wrong and that they are 100% the same. Even after I told him that I've spoken with Audi and they assured me that it will not work, as the trim is different. On a side note... It sure would be nice if people tried to resolve their problems with a company before coming in to the forums and flaming them. [rolleyes]

I'm sorry, but you have a 99.5 and the product wasn't listed for a 99.5, only 2000 and newer. My above post was meant to inform others, who ordered for their 2000 and newer vehicles, that if they got an A6 radio, the stereos are the same save for the plastic trim around it, which is swappable. Since you ordered a year 2000 radio for a 1999 vehicle, it was never supposed to work, it is a different radio assembly. On our site, before you click on the Symphony I radios it lists the radio for a 2000 and up, not a 1999.5.

So I'm sorry that you've ordered the wrong radio, but it was never applicated for your 1999.5 If you give us a ring, we'll be happy to return it. But I would like the rest of this thread to know that the radios work perfectly fine in 2000 and up cars, as the website says. If you receive an A6 radio, you will need to recycle your old plastic trim from your old A4 radio.

I called and you were out to lunch, so I will call back later and leave this off the forums for now.

These radios fit in 2000 and newer B5 A4s. Please note the red text instructions before you select which radio you will order.

EDIT: Nice speaking with qttroking this afternoon, enjoy your snow!

Ok, so here's the skinny on the new A6 symphony radios, being sold for our B5's....

YES IT WORKS.

But it needs some custom work:
You need to switch out the faceplate of you CURRENT B5 radio with the faceplate of the new A6 radio. This took me about 90 minutes, very small screwdrivers, and lots of concentration.

One major bonus, for me at least, seemed to be that these A6 headunits have a stronger amplifier than my old B5 headunit did.
I can keep the bass right at +0 now, where i used to have it at like +6. It is now BUMPIN' and LOUD.
I know this could also be a consequence of my old radio being 8 years old, but it doesnt change the fact that the new radio headunit made my speakers sound WAY better.

You cant go wrong buying one of these as a backup, even if you don't need it right now.

Thank you ECS!

Great feedback/write up. Also let me add that if you go to the site now it specifies which radios should need you to swap faceplates or not. So you can order a straight B5A4 radio or the A6 radio/faceplate swapping units depending on preference.

my guess is that you never did the 'hidden equalizer' trick with your old one... am i right? also - can you do this with the new one?

Yea i did with the old one - helped mellow out the sound some, but i'm talking about the new headunit pushing more power at the same volume level/settings versus the old headunit.

New FTW! I can imagine you would regain some power replacing a nearly 10 year old amp!

What's the deal with the XM module. What's the monthly rate? I don't have an XM module in my 2001 B5 now. Can I add one?

ECS Tuning-Audi
01-25-2010, 07:47 AM
I'm not sure what XM rates are, $7/mo I believe? You can check the rear compartment to see if you have the wiring for an XM module. I'm not actually certain if all cars came with the wiring or only "satellite ready" vehicles. The wiring is in your trunk behind the cargo hold bit molded into the corner.

WHy are these prices so low?

We are noticing price drops on a lot of B5/B6 platform items. They are onto the B8 now, so who knows? Perhaps VW/Audi is cleaning out the warehouse?! Whatever the case, we like it[up]
