View Full Version : How about an intake manifold mod?

I'm running out of worthwhile performance bolt ons for my Stage 2 K03 B7 and wanted to know if anyone has heard of an intake manifold for our cars. I've heard the OEM manifold is adaquete but there must be a more efficient flowing design out there or in the works. The OEM manifold wasn't really designed for stage 2+ or stage 3 air flow, anyone????

I say go stg2+ and then decide...since you'll need a hpfp to go BT anyways.

I cant think of anyone that has an off the shelf intake manifold for our cars yet. Also beware that the intake manifold will move the powerband up the rpm range. So you will lose some of the low end grunt, but it will pull harder up top.

Should have one on by the end of the month. Looking forward to it!

We would probably hear about one from the VW guys I'd assume. There always seemed to be more mods for my old 06 MK5 GTI then my A4. Losing low end power might be a deal breaker for me, guess I won't know until they make one.

how about getting a port and polish on your existing manifold and head and go with some over sized valves/ titanium springs and retainers?
but if your looking for simple bolt on your prob better off with water/ meth injection

the next step is to move up to the big leagues and buy a new turbo. the k03 sucks at high revs. i think there is a wastegate mod out there that should add power but its risky imo.

any motor work and intake manifold work is a waste of time and money for the factory turbo or a K04.
I think if you search there is a thread about this a while back and APR chimed in and commented that the intake manifold is extremely well designed and that there was no need or reason to upgrade it. I could be wrong but I think I remeber that being the conclusion

Ya, just confirmed this with APR. Thanks for all the comments, I'm convinced to manifold upgrade for me anytime soon. Perhaps if I go BT at some point which is unlikely since my car is Tiptronic. I'm looking at the S3 kit or a variation of it for 2010 mods.

i dont know who said it but you cant polish our intake mani's cus its plastic...but i suppose you could port it but again, like APR said, its already designed well enough for most BT setups anyway. my .02

You might be able to extrude hone our plastic manifold...but is it worth it? most likely not in any way.
You've got a HPFP coming...but what about a FMIC...that in MOST certainly a worthwhile mod and will keep you happy (and broke) for a while. Look around, you're not maxed out on the mods available at all...next logical step is a big(ger) turbo and software. Other than that, a boost gauge is a great mod, snub mount, etc..

The nice thing about our plastic manifold is it won't heat soak like other materials.

I didn't include all my mods in my signature. Can't let the girlfriend see everything I bought in the last six months, she'll kick my asss! [hail]

She shares the same PC in our house and I leave the forum up quite a bit. She drives a 335xi and does read certain threads on other sites, but she is not an advocate of spending 5k+ a year on mods though. Everything in my signature was bought and installed in the last 5 months.
I also have a 034 snub + larger cage, just no FMIC yet. I've chosen not to get that yet since I live in downtown Chicago and do mostly city driving. Would the FMIC help even though most of my driving stays under 45 MPH? I can't see it cooling the intake air temp that much with so many short distances between lights.

Regardless, it will help performance and lengthen turbo life.

If your driving stays below 45 then why even do all the other mods you have done??
With that said, check out: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=329809
You'll see a diff in performance even in cold weather.

Are you guys serious? The 0-60 acceleration has better gains imo then highway pulls at stage 2. I do mostly city driving, let's say 80% of the time. Also short rides on the highway, usually going to bars, gym or shopping on the north side. I also work in Skokie, but I have the luxury of working from home whenever I want so I rarely make it up there. I put 4.5k miles on my ride in 6 months and probably the same on my girls 335xi, which is honestly way more fun to drive.
No FMIC at this time for me, my car is CPO plus I'm not convinced the gains are worth 1k yet.

I'm absolutely serious haha, what's the point in modding a car for MORE power that sees mostly city driving below 45mph? How can you do 0-60 runs to USE the gains when you're in traffic and not seeing more than 45mph? Stoplight racing? Just doesn't seem to make sense to me, but it's your car and your money. And I'm sure the 335 is tons more fun to drive..it has 2 more cylinders and one more turbo lol

I just want a 14 second-ish 2.0T, like my MK5 GTI was. [=(]

A 14 second ish 2.0T without going 45mph? I'm confused...
but on another note... i was raised in Skokie and just moved out to the west burbs last january. I'll be at champs tonight if I can get the friends rounded up. [up]

Ha, used to work at Champs in Lombard about 8 years ago for a minute. Spent more time hitting the clubs then going to work so it didn't last too long.
