So I was emptying my trunk of groceries today and I looked at the rear deck and noticed a rag stuffed up in there. I have only owned the car for a week and haven't noticed everyting about the car yet.
Anyway, I pulled the rag out and noticed that there was a whole lot more stuffed up in there. One after the other I pulled rags and paper towels out of the rear deck.
So my question is...why the heck would you do this? Subwoofer vibrating the rear deck? I haven't cranked the stereo since I pulled all that crap out but if that is the case I am going to dynamat the rear deck.
But why would an audi owner come up with such a half-assed solution to a problem, whatever the problem was [confused].
Anybody removed the rear deck before?

Is a rattling rear deck a common issue with the subwoofer?

Mine rattles quite a bit. It sucks. I was actually thinking of stuffing something in there. I already sound-deadened the trunk, but that didn't completely take care of it.

I actually replaced the stock sub with a focal 10 inch free air sub in the same place, and with the extra power that back deck rattles to hell, in fact I had to get the back deck lifted a little since the sub actually hit the deck at first ><. But, it is definitely an issue with rattling back there, if you do listen to heavy bass music I would highly recommend dynamating it, I am actually bringing mine in tomorrow to do just that =)

I used edead on the exposed metal where and sub shroud is installed and I get no rear rattle anymore, SQ from bass is better too.
When I had my A6 I had to stuff cloth in all kinds of places within the cabin, that thing had noises coming for many obscure places...

The engine sounds horrible on our cars, especially when idle and even more so when it's cold.

I hope you're kidding. The engine sounds horrible. I'd rather listen to the sound of my dad's diesel truck all day.
Now a BMW E60 M5 with a Eissenman exhaust, that's a beautiful sounding engine. [up]

Well not rattling today so I really do wonder why this thing was stuffed with rags....and I really cranked it today.
Can anybody else think of a reason to do it other than rattling?

Sound deadening, eliminates the echo from the bass and makes more noise go into the car rather than into the back deck. The towels absorb excess sound waves, giving cleaner sound.
Not the best explanation I know, I am not a audio person, but that is definitely a potential reason for it.
