I bought this car last year with full intentions of doing something more than K04's on it. WMS's laser S4 project with ASP GT's is why I decided to go with the ASP kit. I took pics of everything so far and figured I'd post on here for you guys to see. After seeing all the build threads, it seems like GTs are the new K04s.:)

Due to tons of pics, please don't quote this entire post in your reply.

Here's the turbo data:

Here's a pic of the car in Long Island, NY the day I bought it (Nov, 08). Here's the former owner sitting in it one last time.:( It had a 6k mile AWE stage 3 kit.

Calico coatings in NC offers black and silver.

Damn americans lol.

Anyway, I'd also like to know if those sti coils work - are they exactly the same? If so, why bother changing them? I'm guessing previous owner replaced them cos he had to?

Also, what exhaust manifold is that? Looks nice; but that merging piece looks abit questionable in the flow design... probably good though (anyway, would most likely be better than stock).

don't really need them.. stock coils that don't die because they have 100+K have yet to see a limit to their design that I'm aware of.

I believe the overbore puts it around 2.8. I kept the stock crank, after seeing what WMS did with their laser car w/stock crank.:)

You won't.. because I don't have either one. I have GT2860R, but not with the "S" at the end. The "S" is for expanded flow capacity over the non-S but the main physical difference is the turbine housing of the R is allegedly easier to fit in smaller spaces.

By the way, I googled and realized the exact same part number of my 707160-5 turbos were installed oem on nissan skyline R34's with N-1 engines. The main difference being the skylines used internal wastegates. Autospeed weld plugs the holes in the turbine housings for using external wastegates.

Here's the compressor map of a GT2860RS "disco potato" The strange thing is Garrett apparently didn't feel the need to map it at higher pressures. I know the WMS laser car ran much more than 2.5 PR on them without blowing up.:)

I also thought about painting it but it's under the intake manifold anyway, and I'm running out of time.:) This show it with the spider hose detached from the valley cover so the valve is pushed forward (to make it easier to get the clamp installed). It normally sits a couple inches more to the rear.

Engine is in the car..

http://dave-new.com/S4/IMOLA_2000/engine_pull_may2009/january_23_2010/DSCN3297.JPG

I was having a tough time getting the tranny mount bolts installed because the holes weren't lining up. After 45 minutes I realized the stud on the firewall was hitting the wastegate.. keeping the engine/tranny from moving rearward half a bolt hole. The dremel tool took care of it.:)

Not sure.. I never considered letting someone else do the work for me. That's the best part of the build so why should I pay someone.[:D]

I did pay something like $1200 labor for a local shop, abacus racing, for the block work (bore/hone/balance and install rotating assy) and around $1500 labor for ASP to build the heads.

I thought the ASP kit had the GT28RS's. Did you do a special order for the non-S and does the tune need to change at all between the two?

Long story.. I originally wanted RS's but Mark says he doesn't want to make them because this more compact turbine housing is the same bolt pattern as some other sized turbo options. The 28RS manifolds and downpipes only fit that turbo. That's how I understood it anyway..

you want the thicker oil to suspend the metal particles so you dont mess up the engine. use a magnet on your oil filter and on your oil pan near the drain. just some tricks ive learned from an engine builder with 30 years of experience. if you want more tips then msg me ,if not then good luck.

Yea, abacus racing in virginia beach. Several guys I work with had their motors worked there with no issues. The guy in the machine shop, Chuck, is very easy to work with. He did what I asked for and even ordered total seal gapless top rings for me without issue.

Yea, I replaced the bearings. I replaced the crank main cap bolts but not the caps. Autospeed sourced the new oem stem seals when they did my head work. I gave them my stock heads and they did the porting, ground the valve seats, installed my new inconel exh valves, stiffer springs, Ti retainers and the new stem seals. I'm using the stock intake valves.

Yea, the thermal wrap looks like hell but I have no other ideas for keeping the heat off the connectors. I had to cut some of the plastic connector holders due to clearance issues, so some of the connectors are only zip tied together.

I didn't forget to cut some of the bumper bolts down so they won't damage the IC's.:)

I took some measurements and seriously doubt the RS4 fog lights will fit so I'm planning on leaving them out for now, and not wasting time trying to custom fit the CF ER shrouds. I can do that after breaking the engine in.

One of the M6 bumper bolts broke off in one of the captive nuts on the right fender so I spent awhile drilling it out and retapping the hole. There are only two nuts for attaching the rs4 bumper to each fender.

I'll probably drive it around as much as possible this sunday if you want to meet somewhere. Did you used to work at checkered flag VW? You won't.. because I don't have either one.

Wow, I just noticed the part number on your turbos. For some reason I thought you went with the GT2860R-739548-9. I also thought that the 707160-5 was essentially the 28RS with the funky skyline bolt pattern, but apparently they're a tiny bit smaller. Did you use the turbine housing with the skyline outlet, or the traditional 5-bolt outlet? If the skyline style, these fit straight up on ASP's manis/dp's without any modification? Just curious cause when Agtronic made mine (for the skyline housings) they said they had to modify the manis/dp's from how they normally do them for the standard turbine housing turbos.

My turbo spec data is shown in the following link:
http://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbobygarrett/catelog/Turbochargers/GT28/GT2860R_707160_5.htm

That webpage has a link for turbine outlet flange dimensions but doesn't give much info regarding what other garrett turbos use the same gasket. For that, you have to look in the Garrett 2009 catalog. My turbo is shown on page 32 of 42. http://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbobygarrett/images/catalog/catalog_common/Garrett2009Catalog1of2.pdf

There are three different styles of Garrett "5 bolt" turbine outlets. My turbo uses the 5 bolt outlet flange detail shown on page 77, diagram 9 (page 35/43 of the following pdf file).
http://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbobygarrett/images/catalog/catalog_common/Garrett2009Catalog2of2.pdf

Here's the main link to the 2009 catalog, showing two links because the 2009 catalog is broken up into two pdf files.
http://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbobygarrett/products/catalog.html

The following garrett turbos use the same compact 5 bolt outlet gasket as my turbo:

GT2859R, 780371-1
GT2860R, 707160-7
GT2871R, 771847-2 (Direct replacement upgrade for GT2560R (466541-1 & 4) used on Nissan SR20DET engine)
GT2871R, 780371-2

THe following use the same outlet gasket (page 77, diagram 11) as the GT2860RS (disco potato), turbo pn 739548-5 (use gasket pn Gasket 770119-1):

GT2554R, 471171-3
GT2560R, 466541-4 (states, "OEM turbocharger on Nissan SR20DET engine" doesn't make sense)
GT2854R, 471171-9
GT2860R, 739548-9 (Upgrade turbocharger for GT2554R (471171-3) and GT2854R (471171-9).Essentially, a GT2860RS Disco Potato turbo with a GT2560R compressor housing)
GT2871R, 743347-3 (Upgrade turbocharger for GT2860RS (739548-1))
GT2871R, 743347-4 (Direct bolt-on upgrade turbocharger for GT2860RS (PN 739548-1))
GT2876R, 705330-1
GT3071R, 700382-3 (Turbine housing flanges are outline interchangeable with GT2554R (471171-3),GT2560R (466541-1) & GT2860RS (739548-1))

I know what you're saying, the turbos I'm using (GT2860R-707160-7) use the same "compact 5-bolt" turbine outlet housing (designed that way so that they'll be bolt on for Skylines), and the my fabricator said that he had to do the manis and dp's differently than he normally does for the standard 5-bolt turbine housings because not only the flange was different, but the turbo had slightly different dimensions itself. I was curious is you were able to bolt these straight up to non-modified ASP manis and dp's?

Also, an interesting thing I found when looking over that catalog again, the GT2859R and your turbos (GT2860R-707160-5) both have turbine housing options that make it "outline interchangable" with the standard 5-bolt turbos, but mine don't have that option listed. So I guess that means that someone could get the GT2859R, buy that standard turbine housing to replace the "compact 5-bolt" one, and bolt it straight up to one of the standard ARD, ASP, Agtronic GT kits with no issues.

I just helped someone install a tial 605 kit recently. I'm very impressed with how good the hardware looks. The oil and air lines are VERY nice. The main issue/surprise is the tial inlet pipes won't work with the stock airbox snorkle in place. The pipe connection for the bypass valve hose hits the snorkle at the radiator support. Updates?

Not at this time. I was out of town last week and have been working every Saturday so time has been tight. I need to get my 044 fuel pumps installed then find time to drive up north for custom tuning. I'm debating whether to get WI installed before driving up because I'd like to get it tuned asap. It's pretty much June now and I need to get up there before September due to a project starting at work. I can always do WI in the fall and drive back up for another file next spring. I think I'll do 93 and 100 octane dyno tune files for now and see how it runs.

Sorry, that's my update.;)

It's tough to explain but the large maf bolts to the mating surface of the shroud (doesn't just pass thru a hole in it). That means the vertical surface really needs to be leaned forward about 15 degrees, not vertical. When you raise the rear end up to get that angle right, the entire shroud rolls forward and the part at the front that takes air in is very cock-eyed.. You can flex the fiberglass version but the CF one doesn't flex as much. The first fiberglass one I was sent had the hole cut too high on the shroud and the filter touched the hood liner with the hood closed. It didn't seem right to me so I sent both shrouds back and Tony is crediting me one dyno tune file for free instead. This large maf needs to have a different mold made for the x-1 to really be right. Mine will look like crap but at least I'm not paying $400-500 for something that isn't made for this maf.

Thanks for putting the pump kit together for me!:)

BTW, I noticed there's one time I really miss smaller turbos. I used to love turning on to another road and hitting the gas mid-turn (in the 135i and my last S4). The problem with big turbos is you have next to nothing in 2nd gear and by the time the bigger turbos kick in you're already out of the turn and going straight. It wouldn't make sense to downshift to 1st gear during a turn like that. I'm talking about making a right turn at an intersection or something with a green light.

10 inch wide... nice. They don't poke out too much with the widebody fenders. I'd have to guess around ET20? Looks good in the pics above. I may go with 18x10 ET20. Kind of on the fence between 265 and 275 wide rubber. I want to get as close as I can to the uprights without rubbing (in order to get the best fit & not ever rub on the fenders/liners).

Looking forward to the results once your car is dyno tuned. [up]

I was/am considering 18x9.5 ET26 for the 265 tire size, but I've seen some pics of 265s on 10" rims and the stretch wasn't too bad. Just wish I could test fit before buying!

265's on 10W wheels. Of course, it looks worse when tires like these have very little rubber shoulder against the wheel lip.

Speaking of 034, you guys show a carbon fiber intake shroud with filter on the website.. the X-2 or something. Is there a way to order it without the filter at lower price? I already have EPL's big maf with filter and can't use the filter.

Yes, V-band would be much easier to work with. Standard allen head socket bits don't fit so you're using standard allen wrenches. The firewall is a clearance problem so I had to cut one of my spare wrenches in half and turn it using vice grips..

Yikes ha. Sounds like something I'd have to do, no repairs go easy for me.

Good idea. The other issue I can see is the manifold flanges have threaded holes. If the threads ever strip.. I'm SOL. The wastegates eventually need service so it's not like this is the last time I'll ever have to remove them. I plan to coat the threads with molykote before install but you never know. You would never have that issue with Vbands.

With these cars it's like turbo stages.. there are degrees of "down".. always things to fix or upgrade even if the car actually runs. I'm fighting with the central locking system right now. You get out of the car and it will lock you out with the key in the car. I pulled the fuse but then the windows don't work. Just something else I need to work on after getting the car back from dyno tuning. The lock pump works but there are multiple issues with door and trunk switches and the motion sensor.

False. You have GT2560R not GT2860R. His turbos have larger Inducer and turbine wheels.

Post up the PN from your turbos.

His are 707160-5 which have this compressor map.

EDITED: Ok i fail with PN then. You are right, not a Disco... however, the PN is closer to a GT28RS then a 2560.

Ok, but really my main point was just to reply to RIch and say that everything I see says they are not 2560's, including part number and power levels. Thats really all I was trying to relay to Rich.

Garrett GT2560R (aka GT28R) Ball Bearing Turbo :

Applicable Garrett P/N's:

466541-5001S

466541-0001

466541-1

466541-5004S

466541-0004

466541-4

Garrett or ATP both do not call the 2860 a 28R.

Evilevo
10-26-2011, 12:05 PM
Sorry Rich, but Dave is running 28RS turbos. A 28R is a 2560; its basically a hybrid between a 28 and a 25. A 2860 (28RS or disco) is very similar to a 770 and somewhat similar to a 2868 as well. Much closer to a 2871 then a 2560, which you and me share (yours being full frame, mine being eliminator).

Wrong again.....

A GT28RS "Disco Potato" is part number 739548-1

Dave is running a 707160-5 which is a different turbo. Similar, but not a GT28RS.

Here is the compressor map for a GT28RS "Disco Potato"

If you notice, it is not as well suited to high boost.

Why add meth? As a safety net for a weak e85 mixture?

I believe it was just over 600whp with just E85. I never thought to try meth with E85 but I'm *very* happy Tony did.:) My main concern was running out of fuel pump capacity with the two inline 044's but they connected a fuel pressure gauge and checked it in higher gears on the dyno and no drop in pressure. I know people have parallel setups for E85 with large lines. I got by with stock rails, lines and the inline pump setup.

Even if I did everything marc did with the blue beast I'd still lose the race. I'm 260lb.:)

That's awesome. That gives me hope that I could get Tony to do an E85 tune the way my car sits. LOL. What injectors do you have?

Now, if thats not a 10 second car, then I give up on this platform.

One problem.. you need a 10 second car AND driver.:) I plan to hit the dragstrip but definitely not an expert. It's 90 miles from home so I might wuss out and do a rollout.. and see what I trap. Do they throw you out on just ET, or mph?

I had 72 EVs but Tony switched me over to 91's when I talked about doing E85. The way things turned out we needed them that big.

Are they 91@3BAR? Mine should be around that size at 4BAR.

Here's what I have:

ASP GT kit listed in thread title, with matching ASP downpipes and external 38mm tial wastegates.

Downpipes are black ceramic coated by calico coatings

1.3 bar wastegate springs (large green/small red) It turns out I didn't need quite that much spring but didn't want to take a chance.
It runs right at 20 psi (minimum) base boost on those springs.

AWE twin 2 (didn't have time to replace but didn't hurt hp too bad even though it has small stock clamps between cats and cat back)

ASP catalytic converters installed (don't need hassle at state inspection)

forged rods

Clutchmasters twin disc 850 clutch, all metal friction discs with no springs (it's really not that bad after you get used to driving it)

stock 2.7 (rebalanced) crank, no knife edge or anything special

JE pistons 0.060" overbore (I forget metric equivalent)

Total seal gapless top piston rings

034 compression lowering headgaskets

non stretch head bolts (should've used stock)

ASP worked my stock 2.7 heads: valve seat grind, new guides and seals, inconel exhaust valves, 2.8 intake cams, Ti retainers and stiffer springs (don't recall brand)

Aquamist HFS-3 kit with two 1mm nozzles, WI gauge is installed in Podi steering wheel pod.

ER ICs with hacked RS4 shrouds

APR bipipe

EPL GT maf and dyno tuning

034 carbon fiber intake shroud cut to fit EPL GT MAF

AMD inline 044 pump/relay kit and 044 pump in the tank, stock in-tank plastic hose and no check valve installed, small inline fuel filter.

Stock: intake manifold, coil packs, Y-pipe, throttle body, fuel rails, fuel lines and pressure regulator, radiator fans

710N bypass valves

samco connector hoses for the ER ICs

ASP CNC machined crank pulley

Cheap copper NGK spark plugs set at 0.025" gap

Stern "soft" motor mounts

RS4 tranny mounts

AWE DTS

42 Draft Design catch can

Yea, I hear he's getting his 605 car finished soon so I'll bet he's interested in going.

I need to get the car out of the city area and get used to taking off hard from a roll.

I'm still trying to talk Tony into doing a 4400rpm launch control file for me. He thinks things will break and I'm sure he's right.:)

When did he gain the ability to put launch control into his files? [:d]

As far as I know, Russel's car is solid hardware wise, just needs a proper tune which he should be getting soon and then its game on.

2007.

I would think of launch control software as a revenue generator. I'm too far away but local people go out and break things.. then come back to the shop for new axles, rear ends, etc.:)

A guy at work had private dragstrip rental but has headgasket issues. I talked about my car and how I wanted to hit the dragstrip sometime this year.

He just called me offering his dragstrip reservation in Richmond for $100 tomorrow! He already paid $150 and it will be money lost. He said they're very lenient regarding roll bars on rental days.

Looks like I'm going to the dinwiddy dragstrip tomorrow in richmond, VA. My main goal is to see trap speed but if I get a couple good passes rolling out (don't screw up shifting), I'll try a launch.

Haha.. yea, if it wasn't 90 miles away I wouldn't be as nervous about breaking something. I'll try a couple rollouts so I can at least see a trap speed before trying a launch. It's been 3 years since I went to a dragstrip.

And these numbers/powerband give me great hope with my turbo selection. With mine being very similar, just a little smaller, I should have a little less peak power and the powerband moved to the left a little. Should be perfect for me! And if I decide to go bigger, I can bolt these turbos right up to my manifolds.

So, this is really all extremely awesome, and I mean no disrespect at all - just curious.

Are you at all worried that the turbo is operating at a pretty risky part of it's compressor map? 30 PSI is pretty up there - any risk of surge?

Sorry guys.. me and another guy drove 90 miles to the drag strip this morning but they cancelled due to rain. They rescheduled to next month but I can't go. Things will be very busy at work which is why I pushed so hard to get the car ready and up to CT for tuning this month. damn..

He had his headrest camera installed so I could record my shifting, etc, to go with the timeslip but no go.. so we made a quick video on the way back. US460 is full of police so it's not very exciting..

I'm not worried at all. 30 psi isn't far off the efficient area of the compressor map, to 8k rpms. Don't forget, WMS ran ~40psi on GT28RS's for quite awhile.
