We just bought our 2008 A4 recently (Audi CPO).It is primarily my wife's commuter vehicle.Car has 33,000 miles on it.She states that she can feel a slight surge or hesitation at around 30 mph.She says that when it happens she can see the tach needle move up a little in conjunction .Any ideas what this could be?We have factory warranty remaining so it will probably go to the dealer if it becomes too annoying. Thanks for any insight into this.-Andy.

Is it only in snow?

You should give it a test drive and see if you can create the same issue.
Has she driven a turbo car before?

Is the car Auto or manual?

maybe it's the torque from a cold engine and the turbo?

Roads are clear today. She says it happened on a straight stretch of paved highway at steady speed. She had a 2002 1.8 T prior to this one.The way she describes it doesn't sound like a boost issue to me.

This is a issue with the transmission. My A3 with the DSG does this also at slow speeds when it is in a high gear (i.e )50mph in 6 gear. Good luck with the dealer though.

What is the solution to this? Reflash maybe.Any TSBs?

if it happens repeatedly until the engine warms while holding speed or only slightly accelerating, mine does to, and has done so since mile 1 (ok, like 17, but who's counting?) i've asked multiple audi dealers about it, and i've gotten answers ranging from "no idea, but it's not throwing codes, so deal with it" to "with so much of the engine controls, such as the choke, computerized, we really have no way to tell exactly what it's doing".

i posted in a thread a while back (many months) on this same issue. multiple members reported the same thing. i tend to agree with the automatic choke causing the issue, but whether it's a problem or not is still up for debate. if the dealer won't touch it, it's either not a problem or a class-action lawsuit.

start with the basics...check all the coil packs and wires

Mine does the same thing, auto, low speed, around 25-30mph, cold engine, surges up and down, as soon as the engine is warmed up it goes away.

Reflash..maybe. Not sure about TSB's. Check with your dealer either way.

If coil packs were going out wouldn't it throw a code?

nope it wouldnt, I feel a slight "studder" as well at times and am pretty sure that its a coilpack issue.

Same thing. Happens when car is cold, 30ish in tip/4th. Steady throttle, and the tach flutters up and down maybe 100rpm or so...only does it when cold.
Told dealer about it when I got the MIL and the fuel cuts, they replaced the LP fuel sensor, still get cuts on APR 91/93 with even modest throttle accelerating, and surging still there.

Something we have to live with?

Possibly. No one has replied with any definite solution as of yet.Seems like a lot of members on here are having the same issue.

Happens to me when the car is cold, once it warms up the surging goes away.

My '06 is doing the same thing when cold. It's a PITA since this engine takes so darn long to warm up. I also notice a hesitation at tip-in. It seems like it cuts out shifting from first to second gear when initially accelerating. Is that a coil pack issue, or just a t'tronic issue? I don't have the hesitation on tip-in when in manual or sport mode.

I have the same exact problem. 2008 a4 2.0T quattro with auto 6 speed. with cruise on at 35mph i get the surging until the engine / tranny are warm. Did you ever find a solution? tx jim

Last time this happened to me was a Crankcase Ventilator (PCV).

it's a known issue.

I know exactly why it happens. and what causes it.

What happens: tranny blows
Why: Driver error, should have gotten a manual.

what are you talking about? audi has TSB's out for this. it's a shitty part - that's what causes it. it will continually fail.

Mmm, not really. Yes it cured yours for a few thousand miles but now it's back, correct?
517 trans claims he knows how to upgrade the TC but in reality at least two poeple have bought his TC's and they didn't work.
If there's a TSB audi or ZF would fix the problem if they knew what it was, no?
I've come to the conclusion that nobody knows a god damn thing about these ZF transmissions.
