Some of you may know me on the forums from my B7 S4; however, I wanted to make a formal introduction for my new race team, Four Rings Racing and our car "Giggles" (came with the name, it's kind of a namesake you can't give up). Giggles is a 2001 Audi S4 Stage 3++, built by STaSIS Engineering. Some of you may recognize the car as the winner of the Eurotuner GP back a few years ago as well! Anyways, the team was able to obtain the car with the awesome help and kindness of professional racecar driver Chip Herr, who used to race for STaSIS in the Speed World Challenge.

Myself and my teammate, Dr. Quattro (Quattroworld and here for awhile), will be driving the car in NASA Time Trial events in 2010, eventually hoping to move into the German Touring Series and possibly other ventures. I've listed the current mods below, as well as a few quick pics of the car. Stay tuned to our build thread in the B5 forum for updates as we prepare this B5 to be a FULL, stripped, caged, and keyless racecar! Hope you guys enjoy! [race]

looks sick.. why detuned for the moment??

Detuned to attempt to stay within certain guidelines of NASA racing. If we have the wrong adjusted power to weight ratio, we will end up in a class that we really don't wanna be in (basically up against 780whp GTR-35s, haha). So we're trying to keep the car at a certain point and balanced, rather than just going for raw power.

Hahaha, nice...ya we've been keeping it off the street for the most part because of the liability and such, but we've had to drive it around a few times and I've run into a few enthusiasts while doing so and I just can't ignore a fellow Audi on the road, haha[up]

This thing was for sale about 20-40 min away from me a while ago. It was either mechanicsburg or Lebanon. Did you pick it up from here in PA? I know at the
time it was a dealership that was selling it on Chip's behalf. They were asking a rediculous price for it at the time, hope you got it for a good deal & looking foward to the progress!!!

Not sure if the GMG build will be competing in NASA Norcal, but would be fun if they were out there! As for the RS4 badge, that will be coming RIGHT off, haha, didn't know it was on there when I bought it. The front diff is stock, just adjusted. We will be switching to ERs or maybe a FMIC soon enough, just have some other things to focus on first, the RS4s will be fine for now.

Raacerx, eventually I would LOVE to make it a widebody! But that's for later, haha

Spooled1.8, we did purschase it from PA, it was it Lititz, and the price was very reasonable for what the car has [up].

ROUGHEDGES, the car originally belonged to "Bauer" on AZ, guy named Ben Bauer, and he is the original owner of the car. He's a friend of myself and Dr. Quattro, very good guy.

bryzf1, my bad, forgot to fix that, haha...apparently my proofreading SUCKS![headbang]

2+2=5 right. I guess some people can't put together that the only reason I knew that was because of my involvement with STaSIS. His attitude is the same reason this community is still light years behind because we are too busy fighting each other instead of helping each other move forward. The Audi community has always been the biggest wiseguy community I have been a member of.

Oh well. No skin off my shoulder. Have moved on to other things.

I didn't catch that reply, sorry.

What adjustment was made to the front diff?

I don't want to push the issue, but I've been wondering what kind of front diff a properly setup S4 race car runs. And there aren't many all out S4 race car owners out there. At the track, I don't get wheel lift at the front unless I hit an inside burm. Wouldn't that make a progressive diff like a torsen/quaife ideal?

Thanks.

Also Dan, the FMIC will not allow adequate cooling for rest of system if you are road coursing it. My recommendation is a thick core dual SMIC. FMIC would mean you would have to remove the Matrix Oil Cooler on the car and you want to keep that, and possibly add a PS cooler and trans cooler. Just my .02

Curious, is it possible to relocate the oil cooler to where one of the SMIC's would be? Not sure if there's be room with piping, but this is how my buddy's 350Z twin turbo setup is.

You can, but Dan would also have to add an Auxillary radiator from MRC which would be a pain. SMIC would be much easier at this point, plus if he does any significant track sessions you want maximum flow to radiator.

Honestly, I wish I could get more in depth about it, but I'm not completely sure how they made the adjustments. STaSIS did the build, so Justin may know. Sorry I can't give you more info on it man. But I can tell you that the stiffer the frame, the more likely you are to lift a wheel. I think they were just looking to bias it as much as possible to the back for overall handling. I don't know the amount of adjustment that was made as well, and that would definitely be something to consider. Great question though, I'll see what I can find out for you further[up]

As for the intercooler chat, I definitely will be going with upgraded side mount intercoolers. I'll take a look into the Treadstone IC, as this seems to be a pretty good one[up] But the intercooler exchange will come a bit later, as the RS4 ICs will be fine in the beginning. Thanks for all your input guys, I'm definitely taking it all in and every little bit helps me build a better car[drive]

Ah, nice, you're really close! We will begin with track testing in January, so not too much longer. It would definitely be great to get a good group of Audi's out there, I never see them out on the track! I've actually had numerous people comment about that when I track my B7, they're all stunned because I'm genersally the only one. I'll let you know when we get a better idea of exact dates for track testing, but I think there's an event mid January at T-Hill, which would be ideal for testing

Feb 1st, Norcal Racing, Laguna Seca. Throw some 90 degree elbows on that exhaust and lets all go! Its under $200. I just signed up in Solo last week. I would absolutely love to see this thing in action, and... get a ride shotgun?!? I am never going to sell my S4. When it cant be driven on the street with any practicality, then I will get a new DD and the S4 will become a track car. There are such better track cars out there, but... Mmm, this is a strong possibility! We will be doing the hooked on driving event on the 30th at thunderhill, so we can likely do both. Guess it just depends on work schedules since its a Monday. Ill look into it and talk to him about it though for sure. You should come out for the HOD event too! And I will more than likely keep both of my S4s indefinitely, I love them! We have just registered for the January 30th event at Thunderhill with HOD! this will be the car's first test day for the season, and we're very excited about it! The plan as on now is to have the car fully race prepped at this point, minus maybe a few small things. This week we will be setting up appointments for the cage and wiring, as well as ordering a few goodies. Stay tuned and hopefully we'll see a few of you out there with us on the 30th!

Just wondering what the spring rates are. Also, do the rear Ohlins have external reservoirs or just the fronts? There usually aren't any Nasa GTS races in in Norcal, so will you will be running time trial, and if so, then which group (TTS or TTR or ??) or PT class?. Will be great to see another Audi running in Nasa!! - Jim

Spring rate is set on the track setting at 800/1000, and ya the rears do have an external reservoir, just harder to get to, haha. Since this is our first year with this car, we will definitely be starting out with time trials to adjust to it and balance it just the way we want it. Hopefully they will open up some more GTS races in the next year or two though so we can move into that, that is the plan. We're attempting to stay in TTS, but if we end up dropping the weight too much we may end up in TTU (very much trying to avoid this for the first year), but I think we'll be able to balance it right for TTS. Are you running with NASA Norcal this year too?? I didn't see you out there last year when I was tracking my B7. Would be great to have a whole TWO Audi's on the track! Hahaha[:D]

I've been driving in the Nasa HPDE program for a while. I started with my 2001 Nogaro S4 (AWE stage 3, Brembo 355mm 4 piston BBK, and 700/800 ohlins), but I ended up buying a 1999 Honda Civic full track car that is basically setup as a Honda Challenge H2 car. I'm currently running in HPDE-3 in Nasa, plus do some Audi and also NCRC (Norcal racing club) events. The S4 was a lot of fun on the track, but it is in very nice shape and has a full interior, with the Honda being stripped with a full cage and around 2300lbs. The Honda is fun on the track with VTEC kicking in at say 5500rpm and the redline up around 8500rpm. Having the full cage and 6 pt harness is nice in the Honda with the Hans gear. Anyway, it will be nice to nice to see your Audi on track. - Jim

A few quick pics of this weeks project. Full strip, relocating the battery to the rear, wiring up the instrument panel, install and set up MXL data system, and install the Recaro Pro Racer HANS drivers seat. I know some of you are gonna be upset that we stripped it...but it's a race car, had to be done. Next week is the cage install with the race harness, followed by the fire extinguishing system and steering wheel switch [up]...test day this weekend at T-Hill, can't wait! Quick Update:

Had a good day at Thunderhill yesterday. A few minor issues that we had to deal with (trailer issue, brake pedal depresses a little too far below the accelerator making heel/toe almost impossible at high speeds and I found we found it common to get our feet stuck under the accelerator pedal), but we were able to work with it and learned a lot about the car. Mostly, the car is INSANE on the track! Handling is amazing, speed is ridiculous, and the boost is perfect (we were actually hanging with a track prepped F430). The MXL data logger was really helpful in finding patterns and seeing real time data on temperatures, lateral forces, speeds, etc.. Unfortunately our camera wasn't working correctly (still waiting on the smarty cam), so we only have a few pics and no video, but we'll fix that on the next event. I'll post the pics in a few days when the CD arrives from the photgrapher. Overall, a great day at the track and a lot of info learned [up][drive]

Just an update, car went in to TC Designs (http://www.tcdesignfab.com) today for the custom roll cage install. They do some pretty great work and we're very excited for this phase. The sunroof will also be replaced with an aluminum sheet and the Recaro HANS seat and Schroth Profi 6-Point Harness will also be installed. Will be done in about a week and a half, then another Thunderhill track test day! Will have pics when I get the car back [up]

Very successful day at 034 today! The dyno plot is posted below, as well as a link to the video. Seth and I hung with Christian for a few hours, talking about the dyno, car setup, numbers, strategies, etc. Giggles weighed in at 3250lbs, and the dyno numbers maxed out at about 445whp and 460wtq, with full boost coming on by about 2800rpm. A/F ratio's looked good, but we may do some tweaking with that as well later. The car is going to stay there for the week for some new brake pads and fluid, race alignments, probably spherical rear links (meaning no more rubber), rear wing install (APR GTC-200), and possibly some dyno tuning as needed after I run some numbers. I think I speak for both Seth and Myself when I say the we are VERY excited for this weekend, car is gonna be amazingly balanced! Thanks again to Christian and all the other guys at 034, amazing shop!! [up]

Successful weekend at Infineon this weekend with NASA! Ended up 2nd in our class, running a best lap of 1:56. We're happy with the outcome, knowing that the car still has a lot to give and we can push it a lot harder. Used this weekend to get used to the car with the new setup and set ourselves up in good point standings for the season. Saturday was pretty wet so we used it as more of a feedback and test day, and Sunday we used for times. Also, they combined HPDE 4 and TT this weekend, so there was a lot of people on track. 2nd session was a throwaway due to a few people spinning out and so they called a full course black. Had some boost issues in session 3 of Sunday, but thanks to Justin and some looking over we were able to resolve it and run a good final session. Thanks again to Justin for comin out and helping us out, as well as the rest of the FRRG guys and gals for comin out to support us! Also a huge shout out to Christian and all the guys at 034 Motorsport for your help and support in setting up the car, the setup was perfect! Links to a few pics and videos from the weekend below. According to Nasa Time Trial Rules 6.2.3 "Floorpan modifications to include items such as subframe connectors, roll cage bracing, and fuel cell placement may be approved on a case-by-case basis by the National TT Director. Such modifications will be subject to approval and possible modification factor assessments." This is for the TTS classification they run in.

We already did the rear tie rods, and the upper sphericals have been amazing! We only have the uppers as of right now, both front and rear; however, we will be doing the lowers soon. Dyno was done on 97 octane fuel as well. I have to pull the paper out with our caster/camber/toe settings, but I'll get those up soon for ya [up]...and the NASA Championships are at Miller, but I'm not sure if we'll be there this year due to the fact that it is over a Thursday/Friday/Saturday and I'm not sure I can get that time off. I would love to be there though, so we'll see. Thanks for all the replies guys, and keep any questions comin, happy to answer! Thanks Justin for coverin for me too, busy week!

One question..... Why did you choose to go with the 2.7?
you could have gone with the VR6 or straight 4 and gotten the same power with way less complications or why not a single turbo setup?

We'll be at T-Hill in April at least once. I know the NASA weekend is there next month (April 24th-25th), and we are likely going to be looking at doing a few side events as well. Haha, good question. The main answer I'll give you is that we had the opportunity to purchase this one with the engine pretty much built (and built well), and with VERY low milage. The 2.7 really is a great block, it just has to be built the right way to make it reliable (meaning, once again, that word "expensive" comes up, haha). Plus I enjoy the feeling of a biturbo, it's just fun! And you don't sound like an idiot at all, the VR6 engine is awesome and would likely be my second engine choice. There are really pros and cons to each of those engine choices...chich is why 034 Motorsport swaps all three back and forth for their Time Attack car, haha.

UPDATE:

The weekend was pretty successful, had many supporters show up as well as a few regular faces from past weekends and met some new faces.

cut to the chase.....ended up running sub 2:00 laps all weekend, turning our best lap at 1:52. Most of our quick laps were turned in the low 1:55's and 54's. There were 70 cars on track for all the session Saturday, so it tested our patience intensely. The car ran well, although tire temps were a bitch to get dialed in and the track went from really fast conditions to really slippery/slow.

The car was skipping through the exit of 7 at times as we tracked out through the heavily rutted sections. Locked up the fronts entering turn 6, 7, 10 and 11, which was a tad scary. Will have a more in depth write up with pics/video shortly.

We were happy with the times in that our first weekend we ran 2:04's on Saturday and then 1:56 on Sunday. This time around we ran 1:54's on Saturday and a 1:52 Sunday, with consistent lap times in the 1:55 range. To drop 8 seconds the first weekend and then 2 this past weekend gives us plenty of confidence. Obviously, things will start getting incrimental, but to turn a 1:52 our second weekend in this car on old Nitto's and worn down brake pads puts 1:50 within grasp with another weekend at Infineon.

Thanks man! I LOVE the AIM, definitely one of the best parts I've purchased for the car! It's given us a lot of very useful data out on the track, highly suggested (especially with the smartycam).

Few pics and another vid from the last NASA weekend. As for status, the car is heading back to 034 today to finish up the oil catch can and possibly do the coil system (few things to consider here). Seth and I are counting down the days until our next test day at Infineon, April 13th, with MyPrivateTrackDay; as well as our next NASA event at Thunderhill, April 24-25! Thanks again for all of the continued support, and thanks to 034 for the great work (and for makin us a featured car!)! Anyways, enjoy!

It's the AIM Smarty Cam, which overlays the data from teh AIM MXL Pista data logger...great setup, still gotta mess with it a bit (i.e. get the track map up, get the throttle/brake indicators working, etc.)

Nice!! Well, we'll likely be running some Hoosiers at the T-Hill event as well. I think we can probably run sub 2 minutes. Should give us another 2 seconds or so with the Hoosiers over the Nitto NT-01s as well. I'd like to see around 2:00 the first day, then drop below the second. Obviously a few other factors involved, but if you figure there's around a 10 second difference between Sear Point and T-Hill, if we keep up our trend of dropping times, it's attainable. Hope to see ya out there!

Okay, I'm looking at this page for the NASA signup: https://www.nasaproracing.com/event/1078

I notice "HPDE 4 & TT" are in red, does that mean something? Looking below it seems HPDE 4 for both sat/sun is available.

Do the NASA events fill quickly? I'm in the process of buying a track car and want to wait until it's really mine before signing-up! That should be roughly a week from now, maybe 6 days. Seems like I'm cutting it a bit close now that the weather is looking nice.

Thanks.

Note: it's scary that the HPDE4 requirements at NASA are: "This is the most advanced group and passing is allowed everywhere. This group is best suited for VERY experienced drivers, such as those that have had at least three weekends or prior experience on track." Huh? 3 weekends is VERY experienced? I'd say 3 weekends is VERY novice!

Haha, good question! i honestly have no clue why it's red...possibly a coding error on the page? Either way, I would sign up for HPDE now and you can always cancel (I think the policy allows you to cancel up to like 2 days before the event). The weekend have been FULL and filling quickly, so I would reserve your spot even if you think you're gonna make it.

And ya, the rewuirements for HPDE 4 are a little...well...bad, but kinda just have to work through it and the group is generally pretty good about eliminating any really novice drivers (dropping them down). I actually have been REALLY frustrated that they've been combining HPDE4 and TT on the first day, because it's just unsafe (we had 70 cars on track last time!). I'm hoping they'll change that this time before the event, but we'll see.

Number54 - I think that HPDE 4 & TT is in red, as on Saturday it is HPDE 4 & TT combined, and on Sunday it is HPDE 3 & 4 combined, so they highlight in red to emphasize the difference in grouping on the two days. In HPDE-3, they've been starting on Saturday with passing on certain straights in the first session, and then allow passing on additional straights, and in the braking zones during the later sessions. By the fourth session on Saturday and all day Sunday, it is open track (passing anywhere including in turns) in HPDE-3, and it being open track on Sunday allows them to combine HPDE-3 and HPDE-4. One thing that they emphasize in HPDE-3, is to simply drive the line, and let the faster cars pass offline. By doing that, it keeps things more predictable. I'm not sure how much track experience you have, but you really do need quite a bit to be running in HPDE-4, as the cars and drivers are pretty fast, and there may be some fairly aggressive passing. In the Nasa signup page, there is an area to list your track experience, and they probably will review it to make sure that they are comfortable with you being in that HPDE group. The instructors will sign people off from as they advance from HPDE-1 thru HPDE-4. If you have some track experience, then HPDE-3 may be reasonable, but remember that HPDE-2 and HPDE-3 don't have an instructor assigned to your car. If you're running HPDE-1 thru HPDE-3, then you can ask to be a passenger in an instructor's car during HPDE-4 sessions to get a feel for what it is like in that group - just hang around the instructor area around 10-15' before the session with your helmet. I'm running in HPDE-3 in Nasa (originally was driving a 2001 S4, but now have been driving a white civic hatch with full cage etc.).

As far as cancellation is concerned, the page http://www.nasanorcal.com/event2010/apl/index.htm mentions that for HPDE/open track/TT, that cancellation is allowed up to 7 days before the event with the charge being $30, and the policy for racers is listed in the section further down. For signups, it always seems like Infineon and Laguna Seca fill up before Thunderhill, and HPDE-1 and HPDE-2 fill up before HPDE-3. - Jim

Ya, the LSD is pretty sweet in terms of being able to break the back end loose JUST enough to get through a corner well. We do this pretty much everytime through turn 7 and Sears Point(Infineon) and it makes a huge difference time-wise. It's a little sketchy at first, but once you get the hang of it it's a huge advantage! I'll have to take you for a ride next time if you make it out to Infineon so you can see for yourself [up]

A ride sounds great. I'll be at many of the Nasa events (running HPDE-3) including Thunderhill on 4/24-4/25. Since you have four sessions of Saturday (HPDE-4 plus TT) at Thunderhill, I assume that you aren't just doing warmup or practicing, so you wouldn't be able to have a passenger due to the extra weight during any of the sessions, or can you? Anyway, a ride would be really nice. If you wanted, you could ride in my car (white Civic hatch #21 in HPDE-3) on either day. - Jim

I just test fitted them last night and they are HUGE. About 1.25" wider than the 275/35 all seasons that are on there now! Hell, they were only 0.50" narrower than the 295/30 tires I had been playing with!! It's going to take a little doing to squeeze all that rubber in there, but I'm sure I'll find a way.

Used the day to break in some new NT-01s, test out the finished oil catch can, and work out a few bugs here and there. We also played taxi pretty much all day, giving people rides who have supported us all along. All in all, great day! My teammate did have one mishap with the brakes in turn 6 (see second video) due to the ABS not working (being redone next week), but he handled it very well and he and the car were totally fine [up]. Best time of the weekend for us was a 2:02:4 (see video), and that was with a missed shift at turn 10 (whoops! Seth and I were both happy with the result, but feel there is definitely more to be had from the car. Depends on the outside air temp, but we're seeing between 230 and 250 generally. And ya, the sphericals are awesome, huge difference on cornering ability! We also had them do a race spec alignment, all of which have allowed us to keep very consistent temperatures across the tire. Great stuff!

Just saw this! Nice lap times, it's great to see a fast S4 around the track. Yeah, I'll be back out there ASAP. What kind of splitter are you getting? 2Bennett? What size are the Hoosiers you're running? I ended up doing 3 sessions with crappy times: 2:30, 2:19, and then 2:15 in my GT3. Very slow, but I'm still learning the car. On r-comps, an identical car with a good driver gets just under 2:00. So on one side I have a crapload of improving to do, but on the other I don't need any mods! That's not so bad:)

You'll drop those times for sure as you get used to the car. No benefit in going all out the first time and losing the car (which is BEAUTIFUL btw!). And we're actually only able to run 245/35s right now until we get our widebody kit, but to run a 2:02 on skinny-ass tires and a 3400lb car isn't so bad me thinks, haha.

We're going to put some focus into the cornering abilities of the car over the next few weeks, so we'll be dropping some weight, adding the splitter, and dropping the boost down a bit to keep us in class. Should be interesting for Thunderhill backwards on May 22-23! Here's some pics of the new stuff!

We are picking up the 2bennett CF front splitter this week, as well as a VIR CF vented hood!

Just wondering - I thought that the original S4 bellypan has a small duct for air going to the fins of the front differential, plus also has some holes for air on both sides. With the new CF splitter, will the front diff/transaxle temp be fine, or will any extra cooling (air or maybe pump with heat exchanger) be needed? I know that 2Bennett may have a suggestion on this.

Also, for the hood, is any ducting through the hood allowed by TT rules? There's a discussion on the Honda-Tech forum about Hood Aero, and the suggestion was to have ducting from the rear of the radiator through the hood for better aerodynamics and downforce. The Honda-tech link is:

http://www.honda-tech.com/showthread.php?t=2766239

Post 14 for the above link has some info from Special Project Motorsports about aerodynamics. I've got one of their splitters (for my Civic track car), but don't have ducting thru the hood. Post 26 has a link to a BMW ALMS GT2 build, with some of the aero info being down around 3/4 of the way.

http://speedhunters.com/archive/2009/09/09/car-feature-gt-gt-ultimate-bimmer-the-m3-gt2.aspx

Anyway, that 2Bennett splitter looks very very nice. It looks like the Champion Audi S4's didn't have any ducting thru the hood, but I just wanted to mention it in case it is allowed by the TT rules. - Jim

- Jim

Good questions! To start with the cooling of the front diff and axel, the splitter will not block enough air into that area to make a significant difference. the stock belly pan does have holes for venting here; however, it is also much heavier and a different shape. For NASA TT, there are no rules against hood venting in TTS. There is (I believe) in lower TT classes (i.e. TTA-TTF) which are affected by point systems; however, TTS is solely classed on weight, WHP, tire sizes, and transmission/drivetrain type. So we can run venting in the hood an be fine. Thanks for the info though, we will have to check more into it once we run in the race classes and such.

Just got Giggles back from 034, where Christian was able to work out the ABS issues for us, so we now have working antilock brakes! Had to mount the sterring angle sensor on the actual steering colum so that it would spin, but we're still able to remove the steering wheel. Big thanks to those guys for the huge help! We're gettin ready for Thunderhill this weekend, been busy removing the window assemblies in the front, mounting the new race mirrors, getting the front splitter and brake ducts ordered, and waiting on the CF hood which should be here this week. We also pulled the shifter assembly last week and cleaned and regreased everything as we were having some difficulty with it (see thunderhill video, haha) and it helped A LOT! I'll post up some pics of the hood and splitter when they are on, but for now, here's some of the new trailer!

Update:

Good news and bad news....how bout the good first? We were able to capture 2nd place on Saturday, running a best of 2:03 on Thunderhill backwards, which also won us a free Hoosier tire! However, in our fourth session I came around turn 1 and the car began to sputter, then died all together and wouldn't start. This is the bad news. After 7 hours of digging and testing, we were still unable to find the real problem with the car. We originally believed it was a bad cam position sensor; however, we determined that the car wouldn't die with this going bad as the speed sensor would take over. So we tested the speed sensor since that would cause the car to just die, but the speed sensor was functioning properly. After pounding our heads all night, we woke up a bit defeated this morning. We went to the morning drivers meeting and afterwards I decided to check the books again. Finally, I thought about the flywheel, as this is where 60 of the speed sensor pieces are. So we crawled around (with the help of Brian from Cobb Tuning, who is an awesome guy!) and discovered that the flywheel ring had come off of the fly wheel! Thus, no engine ignition! So, we're going to spend the next few weeks pulling the engine and tranny, replacing the flywheel, and replacing a few other odds and ends while we're in there (engine mounts, gaskets, etc.) to be sure nothing else goes wrong. Wish us luck!

Update:

Unfortuantely, Giggles will not be making the trip to Vegas for Wuste2010 this year. We have too many things to do to the car before our June 26-27 event at Infineon, and the car just isn't ready to be trailered 400 miles each way. I'm sorry to those of you who were looking forward to seeing her, but I know we'll have otehr opportunities in the future. We are both very bummed to not have the car at the show, but both Seth and I will be there with our daily drivers and FRRG, so please come up and say hello! We'd love to chat with you guys! Thanks! Off to Infineon this weekend for NASA!! New 2Bennet CF splitter, VIS CF hood, new RS4 front bumper, RS4 front fenders, fire suppression system, cool suit system, new IC shrouds, Hoosiers, and Eurospec clutch.

We aim to shatter the 1:50 mark!!!!! Considering our previous mark at 1:52 was done with a tad more weight up front and the front windows/window frames/regulators still in, no front splitter, and on NT-01's, we should be good to go! Our confidence with that track is the highest it's ever been, and the Hoosier's allowed us to drop 5 seconds alone at Thunderhill. We are also about 50lbs lighter......

Keep up with us on Facebook, as we'll be updating our page all throughout the wekend! Become friends with us if you feel so inclined. The more the merrier!

Tough break for us over the weekend. First session of the first day, 3rd hot lap, the car lost power on me and then died. Smoke was coming from the drivers side engine bay and wheel well so I immediately shut everything down. After getting the car back to the paddock and looking around, we attempted to turn the engine with a wrench on the crank pulley, as it wouldn't start electronically, and we found ourselves with a seized engine. After nearly throwing my wrench into the next state, we pulled some things apart and found what we think is the main issue. After finding the spark plug (below) hammered, we assume that a valve was sucked into the cylinder, causing some major damage. Also, not sure if the turbos were damaged at all, but we'll be takign a look at them. SO, over the next few weeks, you can follow the Four Rings Racing Engine Rebuild Project. Contents include boring it out to close to a 2.8 with RS4 heads for better cooling of the valves, a custom short (and possibly long) block from 034 Motorsport, and some other goodies. It was extremely disappointing to put all the work in that we did last week and not even get to run the car; however, we're trying to look at this positively. If we have to rebuild it, we're gonna do it bigger and better. Expect Giggles to be back in action for our August NASA date at the latest and to be better than ever! Thanks for the support guys...oh, and the last picture is what she looked like the night before...so sad!

Sorry about your luck...but it's glad to see a car that dominates and has such fast lap times for supposedly "a horrible handling car with bad weight distribution" lol. I just can't stand those people that actually think an M3 is a better choice when time after time the S4 pulls just as fast of laps and is much easier and forgiving being AWD.

Haha, thanks! Ya, it's funny how many people approach us asking about the car and wondering why there aren't any Audi's racing. BMWs are great cars, but Audi's can be just as good and even better given the right mods and setup. The weight distribution may not be perfect, but the S4 actually does handle EXTREMELY well right now! We are able to get more oversteer than understeer, and with some wider tires I think it'll be perfect!

We are actually having the rears pulled custom, as it is cheaper and less involved. I'll post up more info when we get closer to that project. We're working with 2bennett to get it done and I can tell you it will be beneficial for all of you guys as well ;). Ok, so little update:

We've decided to keep the 2.7 for cost and simplicity purposes, and because we love the cams we have; however, we will be making a few changes. First, the engine will be bored out to a 3.0L, with Cosworth RS4 heads. We will also be adding some internals, such as a main bearing girdle and coating the bearings and some other odds an ends with a tephlon coating. We are unsure as to the condition of the turbos at this point; however, we should know on Sunday or Monday when we get them off whether or not they need replacing. If so, we will likely be going the Tial 605 route. Anyways, I'll be sure to put up some pics from this coming weekend as we get the engine out and apart. Thanks for all the support everyone!!

Hey guys,

So Seth, my dad, and I spent the weekend up in beautiful Oroville, CA pulling the engine out of Giggles for the rebuild. We arrived Sunday afternoon about 3:30pm, and began work about 4pm. We works the entire day, and by 2:30am we had the engine completely out of the car! Today we finished taking the engine apart down to the block and it's on it's way to 034 for them to send it to their machinest. Here's a few pics below from the event. The rebuild will include the following:

-3.0L blcok w/ stroker cranks, blueprinted and balanced
-RS4 heads from Cosworth
-Tial 605 Turbos
-Main bearing girlde
-Aftermarket internals (too much to describe, but stronger and better)
-Hopefully maintaining the Eliminator Cams already in the car
-Probably intake manifold port and polish

Get ready for Giggles 2.0 (or 3.0, ha!)...stronger, better, faster!

Well, after all that we're canceling Nationals ourselves. We've been having overheating issues that have continued to get worse and last weekend at HPR it was overheated after only 3 laps. I'm financially/emotionally spent and since the car still runs fine on the street we decided that we would just cut our losses and end the season now. Just picked her up from 034 as we are on our way to t-hill for the first break in track session. Hey all, so we've been working hard with 034motorsport to get Giggles ready for the upcoming season. We finally got all of the parts for the RS4 manifold in, and installed this week, and the dyno testing/tuning began today. Tuning will continue through Monday, but here's what I can tell you so far:

1.)To run TTS this year, we need to be about 420whp. So with this new software, they were able to get Giggles to run at 420whp...from 4k all the way through the RPM band. Not to mention the turbos are spooling to full boost about 3300rpm...the same as a K04 car! That's pretty amazing considering pretty much every car loses horsepower as it moves through the rpms, and that RS6's generally cause much larger turbo lag!

2.)After working with this, they found that at the top of the RPM band our injectors (550cc) were running at 100% even before hitting the limiter and the car was running too lean...so, new injectors will go on Monday (720cc) and we should see a difference. Didn't want to be running at 100% injectors below the rev limit!

3.)The highest they ran the car was at 20psi. They plan to run it a bit higher just for shits and giggles (get it ;)) to see what we can put out, but with the injector issue they wanted to wait. Our engine can handle a lot more, we're more just running off the limits of the RS6's. Anyways, at 20psi, with inhibiting injectors, they got 480whp out of the beast!

4.)I will have more info on Monday; however, we should see at least one 500+ run in there. Keep in mind, we went with smaller turbos on purpose to maintain the racecar ability, not full out power, so these numbers are awesome! Anyways, stay tuned!

They're OEM RS6's, our K04s had custom intake wheels.

Sorry for the delay! Here's the Dynos:

TTS Class Map (What we will be running):
http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5211/5427220484_0e1bc26eed_b.jpg
You can see how consistent the HP and TQ are throughout the power band! Gonna have very little power loss as we move through the rev range. Boost is electronically controlled to lkeep the power constant through the band. 420WHP, 514WTQ @ Boost Range of about 23-17psi

High Boost Map:
http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5100/5427220590_e2c0de67a3_b.jpg
Here we ran the boost up higher; however, our fuel pump couldn't keep up with need for fuel. You can see that the A/F ratio is all over the place, and even with the injectors being turned up, there just wasn't enough fuel for us to get solid power all the way across. When we decide to run the engine at higher boost as some point, we will need to change out the fuel system (pump, lines, etc.) for some larger stuff. 463WHP, 514WTQ @ Boost Range of 23-20psi

Warm-Up Map:http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5100/5427220682_6d5e5f95f9_b.jpg
This is the map we will use for warm-up before races. Running at about 14psi on acceleration and just getting the engine ready to go! 415WHP, 389WTQ @ boost range of 14-17psi

Anyways, you can see the strides that 034Motorsport took to prepare some amazing tunes for us! We're really excited to get her out on the track Friday and see what she can do! Huge props to Christian, Nate, Javad, and all the other guys at 034 who have helped to bring Giggles back to life, bigger, better, and stronger...you guys kick ass!

Well, we were tuning the car to be set at a certain HP, rather than see what we could get out of it. The boost is electronically controlled and so it drops over time, which changes the power curve. When we did push it up, like I said the fuel pump just wouldn't keep up. It can make more power is we adjust the tunes and up the fuel pump abilities, but we were focused on getting it track prepped.

Sorry for the delay in posting, took me awhile to get the vid together. Good weekend for us overall, although it was a lot of work! We started off the weekend fighting with our shifter all Friday night trying to find all of the gears. We finally called it in for the night with only having 3rd-5th gear, and no reverse. We figured this was better than the other option of 1-4, as T-hill is a fast track where 3-5 is used. Without enough time in the morning to attempt another try, I headed out for the first session and found out quickly that we now (without changing a thing from the night before) had only 1st-4th gear! So, after running a very slow session, dicing with the miatas, we began an investigation into the shifter. We found that the bushing on the stabilizer arm of the shift rod was completely torn, so after a large hole, a lot of cursing, some blood, and some awesome teamwork, we were able to replace the bushing with a home-made solid one, and the car shifted better than ever! Seth was up next and, having missed the second session and being way behind in position, he went out and ran a solid 2:04, putting us back up the grid to 9th from 25th! We went into the second day motivated and ready for some solid times; however, still skeptical of our malfuctioning steering angle sensor which took away our ABS/ESP. The first session was way later than normal, allowing me perfect conditions for a team record 2:01 lap. With hours between the 1st and 2nd session, the track heated up fast; however, Seth still went out and solidified our 3rd place finish with a 2:02! Overall, we were happy with the results and breaking our record, but both of us feel that we have a good amount of time left to drop. Next months goal: break 2mins!

Ran a new best of 2:00 flat this weekend. We brought the rear end up a bit, which decreased the camber and actually gave us more oversteer, helping us corner a little better. Unfortunately, we had an incident with two other cars after this and ended up with bumper to bumper contact and a broken radiator, ending our day. But we'll have it back up and running in time for Vegas first week of June (Wustefest), and Infineon the second weekend of June! Here's the 2 min vid, enjoy!

Thought I'd throw up an update:

We joined one of our sponsors, FRRG, at a private track event at Chuckwalla Valley Raceway a few weeks ago, and had a great time with some great people. Here's a video of the entire trip, but obviously Giggles enjoyed the track more than sittin at a car show, haha. Car was running great, until our throwout bearing broke in half a few weekends back. In the process of being replaced and getting her back on track for August. Also threw up a few pics just for fun. Thanks!

We have it down to about 3250. We've been messing around with the weight a lot trying to get it balanced. WE had a hug front bias that was throwing the car off, so we actually added about 150lbs to the middle-back of the car to help, which made the car handle on a whole new level. We have to be careful dropping weight due to classing, but at some point we hope to drop it below 3000lbs.

I know exactly what you are talking about. Yeah where yo are right now your in somewhat a sweet spot as far as classing goes. However I believe I will be around the same weight as you ~3050. At that time I will weigh the car and play with some adjustments and add weights were needed to counter this front end pig heavy car.

Thanks for your input.

Few updates:

The new transmission is nearing install after months of waiting on parts. We decided to go with a dog-box style tranny, with straight cut gears. We also changed the ratios a bit, although they are still pretty close to the allroad gearing we had in there previously. The new unit should be very strong and reliable, as well as give us a little quicker shifting ability without the worry of the syncros. The gears were custom cut by PAR in Australia, which was part of the waiting game. We also had Scotty at Advanced Automotion (also the tranny builder) put together a Wavetrac front diff for us.

While we've been waiting for the tranny, a few new projects were undertaken. New stronger, thicker 034 axels replaced the old ones, the rear LSD was taken apart and cleaned up, bushings were replaced with 034 billet units, and a new single piece driveshaft will replace the old two-piece when the tranny is installed (thing is a beast!).

We're also currently in the process of installing a fuel cell and new fuel lines/rails in preparation for the NASA GTS series, which we will hopefully begin this season. Anyways, here's a few pics and I'll post more as they come. Cheers!

For those who are curious how loud a dog box tranny is...turn up the volume. The audio is taken from go pro mounted under the steering column (iMovie won't let me embed both the rear and foot video on top of the main vid, but I'll figure something out with it. But for now, here's a lap of our break-in from this weekend. By no means our fastest time, but the new tranny is going to work great...it's like driving a NASCAR. Extremely loud, extremely short, and extremely rough...but very nice!

Hi.

I'm doing a track car version of the PFL S4 currently.

http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q95/carlstoakes/S790%20AOW/Cage34.jpg

Cage has just been fitted, and being painted next week.

Just read your thread and am very impressed. I'm down to 1450kgs wet currently & on RS6 turbos, but am now considering aero mods. I don't think I can stretch to that front splitter which looks a work of art so will be looking to fab something up myself, to also include a flat floor pan. Where did you get the rear spoiler though? Id didn't see a reference to it?

Did the front and rear aero mods make a big/noticeable difference?

TIA dude.

Lookin good! I posted the link below to APR Performance, which is where we got our wing from. We did notice significant differences with the aero, especially on the wing. But, be careful not to set it too aggressively, or you won't get the best performance out of it. We actually have it set to the least aggressive position, and it's perfect. The splitter helped a lot as well in keeping the front of the car planted through faster turns. The floor pan is a good choice as well. Keep us updated with your progress too, and feel free to ask any other questions along the way. Cheers!

Cheers bud.

Amazing gearbox you got now.
Questions questions, where to start...

Have you also considered dive planes?
What brake pads are you running? I've just bought Carbone Lorraine RC8 pads (not tried them yet). Using them with Brembo 6pots up front (Porker 996TT calipers) and B7 RS4 rears.

Differentials - You seem to have swapped all three over now (or modified at least the centre diff). What would you say would be the one to change first?

Have you kept the OEM door cards (inside of the doors), or do you have fabbed up something lighter/cleaner, like CF/ally sheet for example? Any pics of the interior?

I noticed you'd removed a headlight, presumably for greater airflow into the air filter? What do you have fitted in terms of heatshields? I seem to suffer from heatsoak a fair bit...

More questions when I think of them I'm sure.

Thanks again.
