I am looking at a 97 A4 1.8. It is advertised as having a skipped timming belt.
Is there anyway short of putting new belt on and spininng the engine in search of unfriendly noises to tell if there has been interference??
Thanks All Bengal [wrench]

Yeah, turn the crank by hand, or with the starter and if you hear, click click click click coming from the head you'll need to redo the valves at the least.

dont do a compression test, do a leak down test, a compression test wont let you know how much leakage there is per cylinder , most likely there is some bent valves unless it only moved 2teeth

I wouldn't bother unless it's dirt dirt cheap and you've got mechanical know-how. You'll have to get it turning over. You'll hear problems. If there has been any interference be prepared for a top end rebuild.
