Check the connector underneath the coolant reservoir and make sure it is still connected. If not it may be bad. Also I would do a flush and clean that stuff out. Have you mixed different types of coolant?

I haven't mixed but if I top it off would the prestone coolant that you can mix with anything be safe?

X2 - check the connector, once mine fell out & the other time the wire was broken. Also do a coolant flush as stated

I'd get g12, mixing isn't recommended. g12 turns brown if it gets mixed with another type of antifreeze as a "warning". At least that's what I have read about it.

Nope. And there has to be a reason why your coolant turned gummy. Do a coolant flush and replace any coolant lines you feel needs replacement. That should fix the issue. And the sensor underneath the resevoir is the coolant level sensor, if that is the issue.
