guess it depends on how much power your going to be happy with. if you want 230ish hp go with k04 if you want around 300 go with gt28. your going to need new lines, injectors, upgraded fueling system, and probably a fmic.

what are you looking for in the end result? k04 has really quick spool, might be better off/ easier for you? it is also good in autoX . that being said if you can swing the gt i would, but buying a used turbo can be scary...

The k04 isn't all its cracked up to be (atleast thats the way I see it..)
I say gt28 [:p]
Yes you'll need some supporting stuff. It seems that everyone slowly advances through the stages of turbos anyway. Next thing you know you'll be wanting a T3/T04 then a 3076 and then the godly gt35 ([hail])

Edit-If you're buying a used turbo, make completely sure its in prestine condition.

Yea definitely not a fan of used turbos....to much shite happens to them.....but I'd say go GT28

I am running a K04 and it leaves me wanting more. It's certainly "quick", I can launch it pretty well and pass people on the freeway in 5th with ease, but If you can spring for the gt28 and all the required add-ons, definately go with that.

is this a 28r? 28rs or gtrs (28rs eliminator).
Either way... any of them over K04.

GT28 all the way. [up]

Don't get me wrong, a K04 setup is certainly a big step up from the K03. However, it definately leaves you wanting more. It really comes down to 2 things, desired power, and how much your willing to spend on a proper setup.

have you drove in a stage 3 car?
gt28r has a quick spool time as well. the car should have came with this turbo. If i didn't have to worry about a new turbo inlet pipe i would invest in a gt2871r atleast

and to the OP:
$800 used for a gt28r better have low miles...

My car compared to the KO4 car walked away pretty hard in all rpm ranges, spool or not the 28r is a better setup and perfect for the daily driver setup.

not to get off topic but how much boost will the stock engine hold with the gt2871r turbo?

stop talking about a k04 and go with the 28 lol

PS: You will need a 3071 or larger to be considered BAT. [eek]

The OP said GT28. Not a GT28R. There is a difference. The GT28 is a journal bearing turbo. The Ball Bearing has faster spooling times than the journal bearing turbos. But the GT28 is capable of more power than a GT28R.

The price of a brand new GT28 is roughly $900, so $800 is not a deal at all. And you can source out a brand new Garrett BB GT28R for roughly $900 if you search hard enough. Then you will need to factor in supporting mods. The same things are involved with a GT28, GT28R, GT2860RS, GT2871R. Only supporting mods vary. With the price tag associated for everything when it is all said and done, that is one reason people like to go the eliminator route. Saves you a couple hundred bucks in the long run.

Rough sketch of what it would cost to run a GT28RS

Used GT28RS: $800
Used Manifold: $225
Used Downpipe for what manifold you choose: $150
Exhaust: $500 (you can have a shop make you a turbo back exhaust and forget the above $150)
Tune: $750
Used Fuel Injectors: $175
Used AFPR and Gauge: $100
Used Oil and Coolant Lines (associated fittings included): $225
Custom Intake with MAF(assuming you require one): $175
MBC: $50
Intercooler: $300+
Murphy's Law: $250

I don't know how long your clutch will hold up, so prepare to replace it very soon once you install yout turbo. Then add on cost of gaskets, necessary fittings, etc and you can get an idea of what it would cost you to run that setup.

mbc should not be needed unless the tune calls for it and neither is a fpr and guage if the right injectors are at the appropriate flow rate.

you are looking at about $2500 if you go used and about $3500 all new for a Bt set up, including hardware (fmic injectors, maf, fpr as needed...)

but well worth the money. i have been in a ko4 car and not close to a BT. i would love to take a ride in a 30 or 35 series BAT car though...
