98 audi a4 1.8t. Started the car the other day and got welcomed with a flashing CEL and a rough idle. Ran the codes and got p0302 misfire in cylinder2. Decided to get a new coil and put it on, wasted 80 bucks. I didn't know I should just swap coils and recheck. I'm guessing my next options are spark plugs or ICM, which I dont want pay for. The dealer quote just the ICM part at $392, is that right? Is there anything else I should be looking to check? If it is ICM should I look online to buy? Thanks.

You should probably check the plugs, and maybe swap them when you put them back in, but it is doubtful that it is a plug. Most likely ICM. $392 is a ridiculous price, check out ecstuning.com

Pure Motorsports has the Bosch ICM for $142. I would go with the Bosch version. I replaced mine five years ago with no problems since.

WOWO id slap the stealership if they told me that price for that little device!!!
Buy 2 of them if you can & leave one in your trunk for "next time" - god forbid but you never know...
ive seen a couple for sale on here & vwvortex

when you clean or replace your ICM, you will to apply a new thin coat of thermal conductive compound (i think that what its called) between the ICM & the heatsink - i used artic silver 5

^Great price.

OP: You should also know there is a way to eliminate the ICM altogether. If you upgrade to the newer 4-pin coil packs (for the 2000+ cars), you can rewire and eliminate the thing. I believe you have to get the coil pack harness from a 2000+ as well. Just an option, probably overkill, but it's there.

But then you are stuck with crap coilpacks. The 98 AEB motors came with the beru coils that don't fail...

Just pick up a new ICM from ECS and call it a day. Replaced mine last fall, been fine since.

bought mine for $68 from ebay... Faster shipping than some of the boards advertisers (mjm included)
Change the icm, MAF element and got a new set of NGK bkr7e's (gapped @ .028) and the idle is quiet and the car doesn't breakup in boost
