I retrofitted facelift Valeo headlights into my '98 and used the DDM 55W kit (I am using the old 2-piece harnesses). The lights work fine but I am experiencing a slight problem. When I turn the headlights on during a cold start, it "knocks" out the radio. The radio wont turn back on until you pull the fuse for it and reinstall it again. I think the problem is that the ballasts draw a lot of power during a cold start and somehow trigger the radio into some kind of safe mode.
What I don't understand is how this can happen because they run off separate fuses. Anyone got any suggestions to how I can fix this problem?

did it have this issue before? if it didnt then there had to be something that went wrong with the wiring

I'd try putting a filter on the power input to the stereo. Something like this:

OP, OEM or aftermarket radio?
I would guess your radio is not wired in correctly.
Does it have a feed that lights up the face when you turn the lights on?

You could try running a localized ground closer to the ballasts. Grounding the ballast right to the frame may help.

OEM radio.
I should also mention that it usually only happens on cold starts when the lights havent been turned on for an hour or more. If I turn the light switch on VERY slowly it sometimes does not knock the radio out. When the radio gets knocked out the blacklighting on it still works but its completely unresponsive to any of the controls.

I am just curious If you ever found the solution to this, I realize that it is an old thread but I am currently having the same issue on my a4

buy or make a relay setup for the HIDs. It allows the ballasts to draw power directly from the battery rather than your OEM wiring. If you buy one it should come with a connector that will plug in where your OEM lights are now that triggers power to the relay.

This is happening to me too!
Any more ideas?

I would take the stock connector plug and plug it to the other headlight connector

So, just swap the headlight and see if I see a difference?

Take the red connector which is the stock headlight connector and plug it to the other headlight connector and see if that will help.... If the wires don't reach just extend them....

That's crazy cause I just got this in the mail, so I haven't installed it yet. Why doesn't this have two stock headlight connectors for both sides? I don't think it's going to be long enough either

Cause it only need one input feed to activate the relay which feeds the both hid

So, I finally got the relay setup and it is working fine, but I'm still having a problem with one headlight being brighter and one being blue. I has swapped bulbs, new ballast and everything else, but nothing works.
Any ideas?

May be it's your projector

If your ballasts didn't come with Can-bus then they won't give the correct voltage to the HIDs when you turn them on, thus giving the power surge you experience. Can-bus does not allow the ballasts to over-draw power and keeps electronic stability throughout the system.
