I had a similar issue before. Check the latch mechanism and make sure it is moving properly. It may be stuck in the latched position before you even close the trunk. I wiggled it around and sprayed white lithium grease inside, no problems since then.

LATCH is on its way out... try grease first.

Mine is doing this now too. I am going to try greasing it.

Just happened to me for the first time yesterday. I looked like a jackass trying to get the trunk to close on my "nice" car in front of the hotel I was at. I'm going to have the dealer replace the latch.

seems to be a problem with the latch mechanism in cold weather as it is happening on my car as well in the chilly mornings when I need to stow stuff in the trunk. called the dealer and not surprisingly they have these in stock (I wonder why...) it costs about $50.

same thing happened to me, in 2 months your trunk will never close and you will have to get it replaced, dont know how much it would be when its out of warranty because mine was still under warranty when i got it

I just replaced the latch mechanism on the trunk of my car. It took all 20 minutes. Now the trunk locks like a champ! I'll see how it fares when it gets cold, hopefully tonight but I am sure there'd be no problems. Interestingly, the dealer had these babies in stock. The parts manager says that they sell a lot of them - I wonder why. From the first look, design and parts of the new latch looked identical but they might have done something better in the trigger mechanism itself, which is enclosed. I might reverse-engineer the old one and see what part is really the problem...
For those who might be interested or fears it might present a challenge, PM me. I took some photos (came out crappy, though) with my phone of the stages and sections of the process...
