Let me preface this by saying don't expect to see anything fancy. I would really love to have an all out custom sound system, component door speakers, custom fiberglass sub enclosures, etc, etc. The shop that did my work recently did two local rappers vehicles they had fitted with an unreal amount of electronics (drool). However, from a cost benefit standpoint I just wanted to add that little bit of power to supplement the OEM system at what I consider a reasonable cost.

With all that said, this little combo definitely does the trick while taking up minimal trunk space. It's certainly not huge bass (like I had in my younger days) but damn near perfect to give my music that added power.

Pictured is a JL Audio 10w3 (2ohm) in JL's PowerWedge sealed enclosure powered by an Alpine MRP-500 (500w RMS @ 2ohms). At my request, the shop swapped out the standard 4ohm speaker for a 2ohm so the amp would run at 500 RMS versus 300 RMS. They also installed a bass knob under the e-brake to quickly adjust the volume of the sub - which is a great little add on.

Cost was about $850 installed - $300 sub/enclosure, $200 amp, $50 parts/etc, and $250 labor, plus taxes. The biggest labor drain was removing the OEM subwoofer to allow air flow to the cabin. For those interested, the custom enclosure hidden in the rear driver side cubby hole would have run almost $500 more.

I just wanted to recommend this combo in our cars if you are looking for some added power to your stock system without breaking the bank.

Amen OP. I have a Alpine MRP T220 250 watt (bridged, of course) pushing a JL W012 to supplement my stock system. I'm happy with it (the Pioneer Avic helps too).

I'd like to get the Pioneer AVIC or Kenwood DNX sometime soon... just been spending on so many other things. Vacations, household stuff, holidays coming up - not good for mods.

Hmm......That's not a B7 shiftknob.......I have a non sline one and it doesn't look like that.
Clean and simple sub install. I like it.

i like the sub install, and is very nice and compact too, takes up very little space and you can still fit a set of golf clubs or 2-3 good size suit cases in there! However the only thing i dont like about the install is the sub control knob. It just looks like it was done in a hurry. I like the idea of where you put it cuz when the brake is no engaged nobody will even know its there, but when its up, it just looks bad for some reason. kinda sticks out like a sore thumb.

I know that 99% of the time while you are in the car you wont see it, but it still looks like it was rush and a hole was simply cut and the know stuck in there...

Love the install tho, and i bet it sounds great! [up]

I too thought it was an odd place to put it, as I gave the install shop freedom to place it wherever they chose to... The install guy told me they put it in that small 'snap out' portion of the console in case I ever wanted to take the system out of the car. That small piece is probably $20 at the dealer versus them drilling a hole in a main portion of the dash. Since I drive with the armrest up, that location turns out to be perfect for quick adjustments. I really like it. The e-brake sort of protects it as well.

nice and simple my style...i used to have a big system back in high school now at 23 the Audi symphony does just fine for my tastes but if I ever want that extra punch again I'd go the same route you went.

That is a good place I would never have thought of it. I would have had it put in the ash tray since i am not a smoker
