Since I installed my K&N filter I noticed a weird noise, some kind of a rattling, or air having a hard time getting by now since it was the first time I oppened up my airbox on the b7 I'm starting to wonder if I could have screwed something up...
The dealers imput is that if there is no check engine there is no reason to be worried... lol!

With a Non OEM Intake/Filter you will hear the breathing much louder and you will here a swuch .. ( LOL ) .. when you let go of the gas.

There may be different levels of "gone bad" but when the MAF died on my B5 the car was undriveable with a flashing CEL. Pretty obvious. You can also log the MAF flow rate with a VAG-COM, there is probably info on this or other forums on how the log should look. IIRC on the B5 1.8T the peak for a healthy MAF was 187 g/s, but I imagine it's different on the B7.

The only thing I notices was that I could hear my diverter valve more with the K&N. Kinda scared me at first till I knew what it was.
Not a lot you can do wrong with the K&N install unless you let something drop into the airbox at the time?

The only problem with the K&N filters is the fact that they are oiled.
Most VAG cars have trouble with them due to the oil on the filter getting onto the MAF.
Kinda hit or miss... I've heard of A LOT of issues with K&N filters, while other people haven't had a single problem. Like others have said already, if there was a problem with the MAF, you would have a CEL and your car would run like crap.
Sounds to me like everything is great! The intake definitely makes the DV more audible. Everyone with a Carbonio (including myself) have heard it as well. If you upgrade to a Forge DV or the current OEM DV, which is piston style, they noise will be greatly reduced. The piston style DV's hold up MUCH better to increased boost and gives piece of mind when the engine has not reached operating temp.
At idle does it stumble or idle rough? At idle, when you turn on the A/C does the idle get real rough or stall? While idling try tapping the MAF pretty firm with your fingertip and see if it stumbles or even goes as far as to die. These are all less than scientific ways with todays sensors and computers and what not but it's one way to get an idea.
