17'' or 18'' for winter

I need new tires for winter, should I buy 17's to go with my oem sport wheels or 18's so I can keep my summer wheel.

you'll have more tire options in a 17, and they will likely be cheaper.

but there wont be any significant performance difference between a 17 and an 18 snow tire. Snow traction has more to do with width than diameter.

smaller the better plus cheaper. you have a ton of options with 17's.

my 18" Nokian Hakka R's cost me an arm and a leg.

Yes they are pretty much the same price so I was thinking about getting 18's so I could keep my summer wheels for the look.

I always use the smaller wheel (stock) and put on all-seasons. Keep the 18's or 19's for summer only. The finish on the OEM wheels are quite durable and probably will hold up better in the winter. Really don't need winter tires unless you have a ton of snow or only have CVT. Quattro with all-seasons handles most moderate snow conditions.

You can also go 10mm smaller in the winter - if you normally run a 235/40/18 tire, check out a 225/40/18 all-season or winter tire.

OP is in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Snow tires are mandatory in the winter.

You can do a 235/45R17 or a 215/55R16 if you have persistent heavy accumulations of snow or ice...
