View Full Version : My Avant S6 LED Install - with Pics
After much deliberation (between FLY's LEDS and installing/modding the S6 LED's), I decided to give the S6's a go. Something about them being in the bumper just looked great to my eyes (don't get me wrong, I love FLY's and he does a terrific job).
I decided to follow nnnicks lead and install the S6 LED's on the Avant. I won't go into great detail with the exception of what I did differently than nnnick.
nnnicks DIY post: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=308109&highlight=led
Thanks to nnnick, enigma, and 10mpg for their pics/info from the past.
Differences from nnnick's install:
-I installed the LED's flush with the inside of the bumper (rather than notching the inside of the bumper) ala enigma/10mpg. This made for some interesting fit of the outside of the LED around the intercoolers, however, it JUST fits. :)
-I wired the LED's to the ignition (tapped into fuse #7 and ran the wire into the cabin fuse box)
-I really liked enigma/10mpg's grilles (the way their shops customized the OEM grilles), so I decided to go that route. Cutting the grilles down, filling the fog light hole, 'creating' the grille bar across the middle, and then sanding, bondo, sanding, bondo, etc. etc. was a HUGE pita. I'm happy with the results (they aren't 'perfectly smooth' yet, but I'm glad I decided to go that route). For now I didn't create the top grille bar like enigma/10mpg did, as I actually liked how the bottom of the LED shows as it does on the S6. If I change my mind I'll create it later.
**I know some have mentioned concerns about the LED's blocking some additional air flow to the IC's. If after some driving I think there is any hampering of air flow, I plan to cut out the exterior (that is always blocked, even on the OEM grilles) solid areas which should provide more air flow than stock.
Onto some pics. Unfortunately just after installing the fog grilles it started to rain (so I only snapped a few pics). I will take proper pictures later. Any questions from those considering this...I'm happy to assist/answer.
Thanks,
tgt

Pics of the grille fab:
Steps:
-Trim fog light grille to fit
-Cut out fog area of grille
-Use tape of your choice and crate 'backing' (something for the Fibre hair body filler to hang onto. I got the filler from Napa). I used TWO coats of this filler to create the bar area.
-Sand (A LOT, this was EASILY the most time consuming thing)
-Body Bondo to Smooth (Note: the body bondo is different than the fibre hair body filler)
-Sand
-Body Bondo
-Sand
(you get the idea, you need to do this until it's smooth and the imperfections are gone)

looks awesome! very clean indeed. i like the grills too, I might have to try this out wiht my old grills lying around and compare them side to side...seems straightforward enough based on how you did it, I like the use of duct-tape :)
Do you have a close up of the wiring into the fuse box? Might have to give that a try.

Thanks all.
nnnick - I will snap a pic of that tomorrow. I used a mini fuse tap and tapped into the fuse box (driver's side, side of the dash).

Real Nice! Now to match them with Phils leds :)
Isn't it easier to just use the S6 fog grills? Cost next to nothing and not as much work as the B7 ones.

Unfortunately not, BELIEVE me I looked into it. The S6 grills are a different curvature, so even though they are less work (to trim/cut down/etc.) the fit is not like the stock grill.
I would have MUCH preferred to go that route. [;)]

Looks awesome, I'm considering this for my DTM bumper before I do a respray. Was the wiring easy since they include a kit for it?
Sharkfin - Wiring is easy. I did not use a separate harness, just ran the power/ground to the LEDs and connected them.
nnnick - Sorry, ran out of time tonight for the wiring pic. Will try again tomorrow night. :)
Someone requested closer pics, here's a couple. I put a piece of 'door edge trim' (had some laying around) on the top lip of the grille and actually likely the way it looked so left it on. Passenger side grille wasn't completely fastened in the last pic.

Looks great! Did these on my custom DTM bumper for our Avant a bit over a year ago, and they've always looked great. Nice to see another hot avant steppin' out... For the record, I've never experienced any obvious effects from the minor blockage of air that these present for the SMICs, and simply don't worry about it.

the Leds look great. Not to be too off topic but how does that epoxy floor covering you have on your garage floor hold up? I'm looking at doing my garage before winter.
lodidodi - Very well, have been really impressed. If you do it I would recommend the clear top coat (which is the route I went). Really keeps the shine and makes it durable through the elements.

Yessir, added an inline fuse 'just in case'.

Not exactly sure what you mean. I wired them up to come on with the ignition (per the 1st post), so no other lights have to be on. Can you clarify the question?
Thanks,

It's not difficult. Just a power wire and a ground wire (also an optional wire if you want them to blink with the turn signals like OEM, but I did not want that). [drive]

Am I the only who thinks S6 LEDs are more OEM looking on our B7s than any LEDs in headlights? It just flows with the car so well.

I've been looking for the lower grilles to do this modification. If anyone could tell me the part number or which lower fog grill it is(b7 sline, a6,s6). I'm going to do the mod, I just need to know which fog grills were used.
-"I really liked enigma/10mpg's grilles (the way their shops customized the OEM grilles)."
I'm looking for these grills he's talk about.
Thanks in advance for the answer.
If you look above, they are the same grilles I used. OEM grilles s-line grilles fabricated.
Good Luck,
tgt

I likes 'em--and especially the garage-freezer workbench...
Regarding cooling requirements, he's in Cheeseland--as a former cheesehead, I can attest to the fact that on the one or two days a year he MIGHT have cooling probs. it just means he can't thrash it.
