Guys, I bought my car with 30k CPO and the air filter was changed. I got the car chipped a week later and now have 38k on the car. I have been feeling like my car doesn't have power it had. I changed out the old D/V with the new design shortly after, but the last 6-7 months I got more of the "fluttering" sound and the power above 4.5k to 6k is down. I knew the D/V could not be bad so I looked into the PCV and it passed all the tests. I remember someone saying about checking your filter with the same complaints. Holy shit! my pre-filter was jamed up with all kinds of shit. I made a pile on the floor about 3-inches high. I still have the fluttering or swirling sound (now louder) but it goes away above 5k. Before it stayed to redline, and the power is back!

For that matter it's not a bad idea to clean out the intercooler ducts too. When I pulled my bumper to do the clear corners there was quite a bit of junk in there @20k miles.

Same here, I pulled mine out to put in my carbonio a few weeks back, and I couldn't believe the amount of crap that fell out.

I take offense to your quoted signature statement - an S5 is more like a porn star - everyone looks and says give me an hour with that. A 335 evokes the statement - meh, that's nice too... I guess.

pre filter: is it that mesh thing that sits right on top on air box (well, inside the duct) ?

Where in the engine bay is the air box? How can I check whats in the filter etc? How often are they supposed to be replaced? I got my car used with 70k miles just recently and want to check it out

^^
Judging by those questions, you might want to have your dealer check it out.

Left side of the engine bay. IIRC, there are a couple snaps on the box you release to get to the filter. I don't remember exactly because I switched mine out with a Carbonio as soon as I got it.

I would seriously recommend reading through the new members guide and FAQ, and even some very basic automotive guides before you go pulling parts out of your B7. If you don't know where the airbox is I am assuming that your knowledge of cars is very limited, and you can find yourself getting into some expensive trouble if you don't know what you are doing.

It's not that hard, even for someone with little experience. I had never changed filters before and I was able to uninstall the stock airbox and install the carbonio without any instructions.
Although I will admit I knew where it was...

I think that knowing where it is located is a key indicator of your ability to service it.

Bought my A4 at 25k miles and found a dead bird infront of the intercooler - in addition to loads of crap in the pre-filter

Poor birdie...lol
How the hell does all this stuff get in the pre-filter...which I thought was a snow filter from what I read somewhere...mine never had anything in it, I ran it without until I got my AEM.

[headbang] I am nervous about your future ownership experience. At least you have located the engine bay.

I installed an aFe high flow filter last week and was amazed at the amount of junk trapped in the pre-filter. There was also a lot of junk at the bottom of the airbox observed upon pulling the filter. I cleaned the prefilter, and vacumed out the stones and random crap in the airbox. Would not want any of that stuff getting on the clean side of the filter after insalling the new filter.

Check mine often now. The 1st time was a real shocker! All kinds of junk... grass, leaves, bugs, feathers, trash, etc.
