View Full Version : My Stage 3 Build

car

I picked up a well taken care of 2000 S4 from a friend over the winter with around 118,xxx miles on it. I decided to sell it and try to find the "right" Nogaro. Well the passenger side turbo went out a few weeks back and I decided to put all the parts I had laying around on.

I picked up a well accessorized, wrecked 2001 S4 about 2 months ago from a user on here. It had the following parts:

APR Stage 3
ER intercoolers
FK Coilovers
APR Bi-Pipe
Vast water methanol injection
AWE Vent mount boost gauge
Porsche 13.9 inch front brakes
One bad ass UUC shift knob
SSAC turbo back exhaust
Clutch Masters Stage 4 clutch
Forge 007's
JHM Solid shifter
A set of very nice OEM head lights
Another set of white alcantara seats to add to the seat collection.

I also picked up over time:
SSAC turbo back exhaust
Clutch Masters Stage 4 clutch with LWFW

Parts I ordered recently:
034 Track Density engine mounts
034 Track Density trans mounts
034 Snub mount with cage
4:1 torsen differential mod washers, the same thing Stasis charges ~$600 for
Full timing belt kit
Gaskets
Turbo install kit

Parts courtesy of the previous owner:
Updated solid front axles
Full Samco hose kit

Help courtesy of:

So the build is on and I am planning on having it done to drive to H2O.

Here's a few pictures of it I took:

Here's how the car sits as of this afternoon. I have the parts car almost stripped and got the engine out of my S4 this morning. I am taking the K04's to Blousch to get them to eye ball them this week and as long as my parts come in this week I will be putting it back together this weekend.

Thanks for the comments. Heading out now to take the K03's off and valve covers. Planning on getting the 4:1 in today and Porsche brakes as well.

Shrouds will be here on the 17th and gaskets and timing belt parts on the 15th. So I have plenty of time to get it ready for that.

The APR Stage 3 kit comes with everything RS4 from the air box to the turbos. Everything is a little bit bigger, and more impressive looking. I will post pictures up when its finished to show the difference. Not exactly sure what, if any gains there are. But since I got it, its going on.

I always use Foamy Engine Bright. Works great for me. I have a small electric pressure washer. Looks something like this. (http://www.karcherresidential.com/en/popup.php?images/pressurewashers/500x550/k_216_500x550.jpg) It was sitting new in the box for a few years and I always thought it was a waste of time. Now I use it all the time.

wow, that ko3 was toast. lol i bet there is oil in your pre cats/cats, cause the car didnt smoke much at all, if any after the boost leak test.

i cant wait to get this project wrapped up and get a ride in it. then another ride when a real fueling kit is put on :-P

This car is clean guys, for the miles, its as close to immaculate as you're gonna get!

Wade is a stickler for details, that is why i like working with him cause i'm the same way.

I just dropped off the K04's at Blouch turbo in Lebanon. I met Bob Blouch, the owner. He took the time to explain exactly what the issues are with my turbos and the causes, with models of other turbos. Great guy and I recommend Blouch to anyone that needs any sort of turbo work.

They both have lateral movement that is close to the max they would like to see, but one has too much axial movement and has a short life if reinstalled. The K04 expert is out for the day and will return tomorrow. I am inquiring about a rebuild as well as the upgrade to a larger compressor wheel. Claiming an extra 100 hp (max) for the set.

http://www.blouchturbo.com/turbos/K04_27L_Bi-Turbo_Custom/

It is not looking good for my S4 making the trip to H2O.

Hello to a local. Build looks very nice. Let the good times roll

car
09-15-2009, 07:49 AM
I just spoke to Blouch and they quoted me $485 each for new CHRA's installed and $250 each for the compressor wheel upgrades. Stock K04's flow 22 lb/min and the upgraded compressor wheel, comparable to a RS6 compressor wheel will flow 28 lb/min.

I am going to go with the upgraded compressor wheel. But they will have my turbos done next Tuesday. So unless I toss it back together Tuesday night and hope for the best on a 3.5 hour trip Wednesday, the S4 will not be making it to H2O this year.

I spoke with Vast about this a while ago. They said all you need is a simple gasket match and cleanup job. They said it made a big diff with stock manifolds.

Valve cover and cam adjuster gaskets in. Pulled an exhaust manifold off. Going to do some porting work on them. I see a lot of material that can be removed. Should get the 4:1 washers in too.

I have been talking to ELP about a fueling kit and a tune. I might put my APR fueling kit up for sale.

Be careful about not to take too much off on the exhaust manis because they're just tube runners inside of that outer shell.

car

Yes. I am just going to smooth out the welds a little, match it up with the gasket. And get rid of the cone at the outlet. Not really "porting" them. But there is a bit of material there. I will get some pictures.

Been lazy.

Picked up the turbos today. I stand corrected on two accounts. They milled out the compressor side to fit the 997 TT compressor wheels, not the RS6 compressor wheels. Also they clipped the turbine wheels, not the compressor wheels.

Going to start putting the motor back together and if everything goes good the motor should be ready to slide in this weekend.

I still need to figure out my fueling, but I have it narrowed down to a few companies.

EPL was my original choice and they were very responsive and quick to answer any question I had. I was pushed towards Vast and am attracted by the good things people say about them, but they are not very responsive. Pretty much got a "just buy our fueling kit, you will be happy". I have many questions and its hard to get them answered. I have an email their way now stating I am ready to buy and asking for info on tunes and pricing for the fueling kit.

Got the turbos bolted on and hooked up last night. Going to be getting the trans on the motor tonight and sliding it in tomorrow. Found the line that comes off the compressor housing to the N75 on the passenger side was ripped down the side and pretty much just sitting on the T. Guessing this was a boost leak that didn't help that passenger side turbo.

Auto flywheel bolts are a no go. There are recesses in the Clutchmasters flywheel torque plate that are smaller than the head of the auto flywheel bolts. I ordered new flywheel bolts and torque plate just so everythings fresh and hope to have that last this week or early next week.

I ordered a Walbro 255 part number GSS340, sleeve and pick up filter. I will take pictures and post up a DIY of putting it in the stock pump housing.

Once I get the flywheel bolts THEN I should be able to get the motor and trans in the car.

No. Not running yet. Going to give another try at bleeding the clutch. I have put together 2 other cars since this clutch issue. Kind of got burned out on it and decided to make some money on other cars. Should have the GLI done in a week or so.

We will put this together once I'm back on the road. I know there's a few others in the area. We will have to put together a meet and cruise.

Yeah. I'm still working on it. Got the motor back out yesterday to try to figure out the clutch issues.

Pulled the trans off the motor tonight. Nothing looks out of the ordinary. Going to compare the pressure plate to the spare CM stage 3 I have as they are the same pressure plate.

Been occupied with other projects. Got the Avant on the road as my daily. Scratched the rear bumper of the S4 putting the Ducati in the garage. Got pissed off and decided to work on it. Top of the motors back together minus completing the N249 bypass. Need end caps. Need to finish soldering the MAF wires and shes ready to start. Just ordered Stern rear diff bushings and Power Ring. Still have to put the rear Hotchkis in and adjust the coilovers. Put the front end on and shes "done".

Been working on it. Backs in the air. Hotchkis RSB, SSAC, spinning the coils down and Stern power ring and diff bushings should be going in tonight. What doesn't get done tonight will happen tomorrow with the oil change and trimming the ER shrouds. This things going to run soon!

Its done. Look for it on the field at H2O on sunday. Nothing special, just a good reason to clean it and it comes along with a good parking space.

Were those #60 injectors you went with for the Walbro 255? How is combo running with the rest of the setup?

Made it to H2O in 2010. Went into limp mode half way there. Cleared the codes and it ran fine. I was a little too excited to save the codes, but I remember them being bank one and two lean. Happened once again on the way to Baltimore a few months ago. I drove it for 7 hours yesterday and it didn't skip a beat.

I just turned the aggressive tune on around Christmas and I am very impressed with the power. I plan to make it to CBRD's next dyno shootout as it is about half an hour from me. It would be great to get a bunch of the locals there next time. Ill post it up when the time gets closer.

I still have the larger meth injectors to put it. I should get more meth first though.

I am having no issues with the EV-14's, 60# @ 3 bar, and the Walbro. It was recommended to me by Vast. As well as many other tuners I spoke with when deciding which tuner to go with. I have not seen the lean codes lately and really need to get out there and do some logs. But it just runs so good I keep forgetting to get on it.
