View Full Version : Insurance Question
Since i'm buying another car, I plan on putting insurance on it since that'll be the only car I drive.
My A4 will just sit in my driveway until it is sold.
Do I have to keep insurance on it even if it will not be driven at all?
Thanks

Worse case scenario, just lower your insurance to the absolute minimum you can pay for and have it still be legally covered....

Yes, you do. Just keep fire/theft only on it as it's $20/mth maximum. You must keep a continuous insurance history of any vehicle you currently own if you intend on insuring it again at a later date.

Unfortunately that's completely and utterly incorrect. Your homeowners policy will NEVER cover your vehicle under any circumstance.

Insurance regulation varies from state to state... A call to your insurance agent would answer your question.

True that. Through some insurance companies you might even be able to do it online. I can add/remove/change my policies at anytime online with a few clicks.
If you don't pay monthly, say bi-anually, and you want to change your package, by law they have to reimburse you for your policy for the things not covered by the new policy[up] Hope that helps.

As long as it is off the city street you do not NEED to carry any insurance at all, however if anything happens to it your screwed.

Would definitely contact your insurance agent... Insurance laws are different everywhere. I have a friend in VA that dropped his insurance for a weekend, because he was switching companies (before you ask, no, he didn't drive over the weekend). Somehow the state figured it out and hit him with the "uninsured motorist clause" (it's on the back of our registration paperwork) and fined him the $500 for the coverage lapse. And wanted him to get the "public ($$$) insurance option". VA state law says that you must keep all vehicles insured, at all times. He has a court date, but they booked him a date over a year in the future.... [headbang]
Best to get a hold of your agent and CYA.

I must disagree... At least for my insurance.
I maintain a "rider" on my homeowners policy that covers my vehicles while garaged. If I loose the house due to fire and such, my vehicles will be covered by homeowners.

I happen to work for a major ins company in NY and as long as you have NY license plates and active registration on the vehicle, it must be insured...unless your in the military, there are special regulations if you are being deployed.
Also, if it will be kept on private property, such as a drive way, usually that is not a problem. Since you live in Queens like myself, I don't see it being an issue as long as it's a closed driveway.
Alot of companies offer what's called a storage plan in which your vehicle is insured for Comprehensive coverage(Fire, Theft, Vandlisim, Falling Objects, Glass Damage) while it is not being driven. If it's registered in NY, plates must be surrendered or transfer to another vehicle in order to do this.
Hope that helps.
