Hey guys - I just wanted to come in here and ask if anyone has had any experience with the 034 side mount intercooler for our cars. I have a front mount on right now and I don't like the looks of it. Will a larger core side mount be just as good? I want the car to have a total stealth look so no1 knows what's under the hood of it :).

That being said - these units do seem a bit pricey, are there any others that I may want to take a look at? I have a k04 now and don't really plan on going far beyond that. Thanks in advance!

I think you will be good with a side mount if you plan to stay with a K04.

The 034 SMIC is made by Apikol. They have charts on their website that show the IAT drop with the stock SMIC vs the Apikiol SMIC on a k04-15.

https://www.apikol.com/whitepaper/Apikol%20B5%20A4%20SMIC-dyno%20testing%20results.pdf

A bigger SMIC is good for smaller turbo applications, such as the stock turbo and k04. But if you have a bigger turbo application, direct flow from a front mounted intercooler will always be more effecient. And FWIW, I also plan on purchasing the Apikol SMIC for my vehicle (stock tuned turbo). But if you have a Big Turbo, an FMIC will be the better alternative even though they are supposed to be good into the 350chp turbo region. Other ones to look into is the Boost Factory (http://boostfactory.net/product_info.php?cPath=22&products_id=77) and TyrolSport (http://www.tyrolsport.com/index.php?p=product&id=45&parent=67) (more expensive).

Anything that I've seen is in the $5-700 range, why is it that there aren't any made that are a bit less expensive?

Could be that there are only 3 known companies that I know to whom make them. All of them are listed in this thread. I don't know why the Apikol one is priced lower, but let's just hope they don't raise the price on them. For now, that is[;)].

Strange.. Thought there may be a bigger market for them. I know the front mount is awesome and everything but shouldn't something be said for keeping the car looking exactly stock?

If you want a stealthy look you would need to have your piping made to retain lower grill inserts, have them retain fog lights if it is a facelift, and be anodized black. Some people use black radiator paint on the piping and core of their fmic (have fins covered during this process), then lightly coat the fins with black radiator paint. Evolution Racewerks makes a stealth fmic for the B5 A4. But it does not fit behind the stock bumper.

Damn. Kinda crazy that there's not a higher demand for them lol

yeah, i was going to shell out for the Tyrolsport but at that price, i would rather go with a FMIC, as I am BT... right now i am heatsoaking like no other. i have to make the investment...

the SMIC i was thinking about getting, just not enough reviews with 2871 or larger guys running them...

I do like SMIC's, but for an A4 the front mount is more efficient on a big turbo.

Why not get some radiator paint and paint the IC black? There are some members have done this and routed there piping so they retain all grills and fog lights.

It's not the coloration of the piping that bothers me. It's the location. The pipes are sticking out really bad and I don't know if i should have a machine shop re-do it or what I should do. It's an ebay kit off my cousins b6 that was fitted to my car. lol

Need to have someone make new pipes using 45 deg connection hoses at the outlet/inlet of the fmic. This way the pipes will angle back behind the grills. This is the down side of using a universal FMIC which has the inlet/outlet coming staright out vs angled back like how ER makes their kits.

No because the SMIC is a much thicker core which cost just as much as a thinner/longer FMIC core.

So How does the Apikol SMIC compare to Boost Factorys then, anyone know?

There is roughly a $215 difference for starters[;)]

The dimmensions for the Apikol are: 10"x8.1"x4.5" (showed 30*F IAT drop on k04, no ambient temp listed in testing, results done by 3 dyno pulls with cool off in between, full exhaust, Apikol throttle body hose)

The dimmensions for the Boost factory are: 6"x8.1"x8" (showed 20*F temp drop at outlet of the SMIC and not via IAT sensor, ambient temp of 35*F, no list of what turbo or software was used)

No info listed for the TyrolSports one

I Know that. :-) I mean in terms of efficiency. Boost Factory Lists their unit flowing at 491 CFM..

Perhaps I'll just have someone weld up some new pipes for me. I REALLY don't like the way mine are. They poke out so much on the driver side its ridiculous. Can anyone recommend me a good shop in the NJ shore area that would be good at welding these pipes for me for a decent price?
