View Full Version : Dectane Hedlights....under my surgery

Hi Guys,
A Fellow Ziner (rg_a4) sent me his set to try to improve the LED brightness and try to install the system I use on my V3's. The bottom LED (4 of them) are the one that came with the headlight and the one on the side (4 of them) are mine [:D]. I still have to make a little circuit board to foul the ECU.
I hope he will be glad of the result [up]
While they are open, going to get rid of the smoked lens in front of the turn signal and paint in black the strip below the high beam
If interested by the "upgrade", PM Me.

Phil, that you are willing to take on this project shows your versitility and ability to adapt to the market place around you, which is a key to success.
I raised this question in the previous thread but I think it got drowned out: for the benefit of those interested in these lights, now that you have them opened, what are your thoughts on swapping out the projectors with some high-quality units such as the hella bi-xenon 90MMs http://www.amazon.com/Hella-Headlamp-BiXenon-Capsule-Ballast/dp/B000DZM4MO

Hi Koby,
Plenty of room to work inside and the material quality is average.
The headlaml could be installed with some tricks but my question for you is: Why? $650 for the headlamp + $400 for the Dectanes?? Does no make any sense to me. Why don't you just go OEM?
I am selling OEM Xenons with LED V3 installed for $800 [o_o] You just need the ballast and bulbs

Yes, the chrome reflector make them stand a bit more but not that much compared when installed on my V3's. Everything is in the LED and they better be good because they cost me a fortune [headbang]

How much do you do the Dectane conversion for?
How much for OEM xenons with V3?

Yeah I didn't really make it clear, but I think Phil knows what I'm talking about.
I already had Phil's LEDs but moved on to the HELIX s5 replica headlights which are identical to these Dectane headlights, just made for B6. One of the reasons I moved on to the HELIX is because when I put Phils LEDs in my OEM headlights, I trashed them due to opening them up. They use a glue to seal the B6 headlights where as I think Phil said the B7s use a sealant that is reusable unlike the B6s.
So what I'm asking is do the Dectane headlights use a glue like the B6 or a sealant like the b7?

this is why I don't do these types of things on my car [up] I went stage 2+ before even trying anything cosmetic, because it's best left to people like Dr. Phil! I would have done what Tony@AE did to his B6 lamps, for sure.

If you knew the work he has to do to actually get these to work with car without producing error codes and what not, plus the cost of the LEDS from wherever he buys them + shipping, and other materials... i'm sure that all adds up.

Phil, loving your work.
Is there any way to retro some sorte of LED reflector (like the Dectane Hedlights or the OEM B8 headlights) in our OEM Bi-Xenons to make the LED brighter than the V3s? Dont get me wrong I like your V3s. I have your V2s and like them at night time but I want something brighter for the day time, I dont think the V3s are bright enough (during the day) for my taste. Plus I like the rectangle look of the light output on the OEM B8 and Dectane Hedlights vice the V3 round look. CA$H in not an issue.

To try to answer your questions:
I get the LED from Germany. The type I use are only build in small quantities and I do pay for that. In life, you pay for quality and this is another example (only ones I found reted up to 100,000 hrs of use). I do pay International Priority Freight to get them + Custom fees.
Then, for the Dectane for example, I need to fabricate a circuit board as interface (you can't plug them them directly to a 12V source). Then, you need to make sure that all the above does not trigger a fault code. Just to let you know, I don't even count my labor for all of this.
As previously said, this is not a source of revenue for me, I do that for fun.
I hope you understand but you are free to try and do better for less, I would definitively respect that [up]

Is there any way for you to retro some LED REFLACTORS like the B8 or Dectane Headlights? Don't get me wrong I know your V3s they are bright and I already have your V2s. I just don't think they (V2 and V3) are bright enough during the day for my taste. The LED used for you V3s have suffice output, they just need that extra UMPH that a REFLECTOR can provide (proven by the Dectane Headligh LED retro you are currently working on) What I’m looking for is the same rectangle like light output found on the B8 and Dectane Headlights.

Well, I really see what you mean but here is the main issue: To come up with something like this, no other way than than Injection Molding with Chrome treatment. You need, at list, a $5000 deposit with the Molding company to come up with a prototype. Then, with the Xenons for example, the profile will be too high and will obstruct the headlight beam.
Now, I can tell you that the pictures of the V3 don't really make justice. The LED on the V3 are embeded to the profile and act as reflector. I use the same type of LED on both and trust me, not a really big difference of brightness between the V3 & Dectanes with the reflectors.

Few details of the surgery:
Still don't understand why they installed this smoked piece of plastic in front of the turn signal
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c395/fly300kts/IMG_0330Small.jpg
So the trim had to go
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c395/fly300kts/IMG_0338Small.jpg
Now the problem: because the piece was in place with screws, I had to plug this
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c395/fly300kts/IMG_0332Small.jpg
and this
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c395/fly300kts/IMG_0333Small.jpg
Routed 2 little piece of chromed plastic and voila
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c395/fly300kts/IMG_0335Small.jpg
Also painted in black (used to be smoked) the trim below the high beam
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c395/fly300kts/IMG_0337Small.jpg
I will test my wiring tomorrow on a donor car to make sure the circuit board I installed does his job. Then, back in the box, will be shipped overnight to the Owner for Wednesday delivery. I let him be the judge

How are the connections if you have bi-xenon and adaptive lighting
I would not even try for 2 reasons:
1/ The headlights (Dectanes or others) are NOT rated for HID kit and for a simple reason: If you even try, the housing around the main bulb will be melted in less than 5 mn: It is only made with plastic, no metal part to sheild the heat.
2/ The connector with Adaptive BI-Xenons has 12 pins while the Halogens has only 5. I would be a real nightmarre to try to swap and not have any fault code, and for the reason #1, it makes even less sense

So you're saying if someone put HIDS in the dectanes they would melt?
Must not be the case since i dont see other guys having this problem.
I apologize if i misunderstood your post though

Yes, this is what I am saying:
On each headlight, there is a sign like this:
NO HID

They call the "light temperature cooler". In fact the bulb temperature is almost x1.5 higher with a HID compared to a regular bulb

That's what audi said about my ECU, too.
Fly, what can be done to the headlights to allow for for the temperature? Any kind of coatings/protection that can be applied to the housing? Surely if there was a way for you to put hid projectors in these headlights.. you would have come on here to tell us it was possible, and that you're willing to take our money for the job!? I would hope so!
So, assuming Fly's answer is "nothing can be done", we just wait for Redlabel to come tell us.. something?
fly300kts
09-11-2009, 04:48 PM
Yes it can be done. If someone send me a set of Dectane + 2 projectors that will fit the diameter, I can give it a shot
I regret that I did not take any picture of the Dectanes inside: Everything is made of plastic and the main bulb housing is hold in place with sheet metal screws into plastic. I would be really concern if you drop an HID kit on them...but again, I don't know shit so it might last

^^ Oh no they don't

xenons run cooler than halogens
freeflow
09-11-2009, 09:51 PM
^^ yep
HID's are apprx 3X Brighter, yet have 35% less power consumption, thus generate much less heat during operation.
This is due to the fact that HID rely on an electrical charge to ignite xenon gas in a sealed bulb, similar to the lightning phenomenon in the sky. HID lighting does not have a filament but instead creates light by igniting an electrical discharge between two electrodes in an air tight tiny quartz capsule filled with xenon gas
Phil, my guess is that the sticker is there to tell you visually that the unit does not come with an HID kit installed.

...or that the reflector is shaped for a halogen filament and HIDs won't produce a proper beam pattern?

No problem here with my housings running mTec HIDs. :) It does say no HIDS on the headlights, but I think this is because of the design of the lense.?

I think the white-out headlights on an ibis white would look good..
BUT the all-black dectanes, with fly's LED's, on an ibis white A4 with titanium pkg/modded plastidip would look EVEN better.

Hey, rg_a4!
You wouldn't perhaps been valeting your car at mohegan sun yesterday would you? haha I work as a valet up there and I think I may have parked your a4...I saw it pull up and was like OMG AN A5, then realized it was some sweet dectane's with some really bright LED's....then I put one and one together and realized it just had to been you with FLY's kit.
It's absolutely stunning, something that needs to been seen in person and not on pictures posted online.

Something that I am trying to explain for a long time:
Pictures don't make justice, you need to see them in person and this is valid for both, the Dectane upgrade or my V3's
