View Full Version : What makes the GSG intake the "only true cold air intake"

Just the fact that it pulls the air from closer to the floor or what?

The GSG CAI is located more towards the front of the car, and the filter is more away from the cat/testpipe and engine(Heat). I believe in order to install the GSG CAI properly you also need their front mount inter cooler, because the stock side mounts are in the way.

TJ: You have a Vorsteiner Hood and are in SD?!?! Pics? I've never seen anyone else down here with one besides Gaede, but he has since moved on. You didn't by chance buy his did you?

allow me to chime in, the GSG CAI is routed towards the bottom of the headlight, which sucks the cold air when driving. Other intakes, have the filter in the engine bay covered by some sort of heat shield.

if you have any other questions, feel free to hit me up!

here is how it sits under the headlight:

Yeah, I picked up Gaede's. I havn't put up any pics yet cause I still need to do a couple things.

Quattro, I can't help but notice you switched to GSG CAI from Evo MS with GSG inlet pipe. That is my current setup and just curious why you went GSG CAI and if you feel that is a better solution. The Evo MS didn't feel like a top quality solution when installing and I am kinda on the fence as to whether I want to keep it.

His car felt at least 50hp faster with the GsG Intake.

Very cool. Will you be making your way up to PureMotorsport's Open House, it would be awesome to meet another SD Audi Enthusiast....

P.S. Hows the hood holding up...all bueno?

you are correct, I did have the evoms intake prior to the GSG CAI. I used the evoms with the intake pipe for quite some time, since GSG was in the process of acquiring their intake filters.

I was the GSG test car, so I upgraded to the CAI once it was ready to be R&D; I felt an overall difference over the evoms/gsg intake pipe with the new CAI. The EvoMs intake served its purpose, I ran it for a few months prior to going the GSG route. The quality of the EvoMS intake is not that bad, I had fun with it. Either way, you get a great sound out of either intakes.

I'm not sure what makes it a cold air intake...

Aluminum pipe transfers a lot more heat from the engine bay into the intake than the factory rubber/plastic components.

The difference is a tru CAI pulls air from outside the engine bay. ie, in the bumper. It pulls cooler air out of the atmosphere, instead of heat soaked, under the hood air. There truly is a big difference.

Imagine this. Get inside a sleeping bag with a heater, zip it up over your head, and see how long you can breathe! Then go out side and breathe normal air. Which would you prefer? that's the difference.

I dont know why people are so concerned with true cold air intakes.

The intake air goes into a hot turbo and the cold in goes into the engine from the smic ..

am i missing anything here?

It does make a difference when the air starts 30-40 degrees colder. Maybe GSG will chime in here and help out.

ill see if jordan will hop on later and answer questions about the CAI, hopefully this doesnt lead to another epic fight on AZ haha...

It doesn't start out 30-40 degrees cooler when there's an aluminum pipe involved which transfers more heat than the factory components do.

how would it ever get 30 deg colder?

70-80 deg. ambient outdoor temp vs. 120 engine bay temp.

there's no true cod air intake for these cars, the GSG one is just not as hot as some of the others.

Does everyone that cares about COLD AIR into the intake realize that the air is going into the TURBO.. that thing is like 400 degs.

It doesnt matter if the air is 80 degs or 120 degs

It does matter to some extent; a change in pre-turbo IATs will result in a small change in actual IATs after the ICs.

However, I doubt that that intake setup actually provides any colder air to the turbo. While it does place the filter under the bumper, it also routes the intake air through aluminum piping in the engine bay, which allows for more heat transfer than the OEM parts.

GSG said that they have some heat treatment coating or something like that they do to their aluminum. can't remember what it was though.

anyways, even with that treatment i too feel that its gonna make it warmer compared to OEM parts

Couldn't you wrap the pipe with some header/exhaust wrap and solve that issue?

Did you need to remove anything to get it there? Or did it just slide in?

Some one did a temperature comparison for how much pre-turbo cooling does performance wise. You're money spent on an upgraded intercooler will definitely be better spent if you don't have one.

That CAI will definitely sound good though.

it does sound amazing. I forgot what it was like. I used to have one on my stage 2 jetta, and I used to make people scream driving by them before. it was loud.
