View Full Version : In-vent GPS test fit, what do you think?

Got bored and test fitted my tomtom One... Has anyone done anything like this? Not entirely sure how I feel about it, it's practical but I wish it looked a bit more OEM. Guess I can make a faceplate for it to match the contour of the vents though...

If I do it, plans are to hardwire it with a USB port in the knee bolster so I can hook it up to my computer and use the empty push button slot next to the fog buttons for power on/off. OEM FTW!

Thoughts, comments, suggestions...

I'm pretty sure this has been done before.

I think it looks good. How's the glare on the screen in that location?

thats looks awesoeme, so are you going to have to hook it up for a 12v key on source to keep it charged?

Looks good. I would paint the trim ring around the screen black or dark gray.

Do it. Only thing I'd do is pull it out a little so you can maybe actually put the dock right there and take it out.

AWESOME!!!!!!

ME WANT!

I would think if you recess it a little more, you would prevent a lot of glare, how bad does it look at a slight angle? also, try to fab up some type of trim-ring for it, so it looks more OEM. Can you make the top of the trim ring thicker? So it sticks out and prevents glare from the top?
Definitely put some sort of baffle behind it, ever notice how when you shut the A/C off the boost gauge gets frosty? You REALLY don't want the electronics to do that, maybe pack some insulation in behind it.

I like the idea of the USB port in the knee bolster, handy, yet pure stealth.
agree with 99blueb5 though, needs to be hardwired into the key on/off.

Also, how cool to match the color scheme to the Audi factory scheme? and put a pic of YOUR car on it...........I want a TomTom One now........damn you

keep us posted!
and post lots of pictures

Thanks for the comments guys, I think I'm gonna do it. I didn't drive around with it cause I was just test fitting it but the screen has a matte finish on it so glare isn't really an issue at all. And yep, I plan on making a black plastic trim piece for it to match the vents. I'll post pics when I find the time to get it in there.

The angle in money, BTW. And yes I'm gonna wire it to the ignition and use a factory push button switch to turn the unit on/off. Stealth + OEM = [up]

hey discontained, that first one is not a gps, its a "external" iPod screen. forgot what its called.

to the OP, the install looks good! be sure to post up final pics so we can see how it turns out. I'm looking for a way to mount my garmin nuvi 780, its huge compared to the tomtom one. no way it would fit in a vent.
