All it is is pipe. It would cost em 20-30 bucks in material and shouldn't take more then an hour or so. They prob make up for it in volume. I see no point in spendin 1200 bucks on an exhaust when all the expensive one is is the same pipe with a diff muffler. Had a custom one including muffler made for my MR2 and it was like 240 from a shop near me.

all my old cars I got a custom muffler done, altho mine now has a borla full exhaust, I suppose it would depend on how well they do the bends and if the materiel they use will rust or not

it will work and thats about right, i spend about 200 on them. problem is they rust at the welds, they rust on the seam welds used to make the pipe, and the bends are restrictive. by the time you talk about stainless steel and tig welding plus an SS muffler its going to cost slightly less than buying a new one(especially for a 1.8t). and you can always find a used one cheap.

these cars destroy exhausts that arent stainless or whatever near-stainless steel they use for the stock pipe

^^^ Find a shop that can do full SS and SS TIG welds as well. I know a great shop in MD that does this for about 650 for a Catback. I bought a used APR (2.75) with downpipe and had them cut out the resonator and replace with SS pipe and SS TIG welds. I always get compliments about how nice the car sounds.

thanks for the input...i cant afford stainless but im going to see what i can find out about the welds rusting on some of these custom exhaust setups....im only going to be having this car on the road for about 2 more years then i will have an s4 and the money to start tracking this car and putting a BT setup....would someone like to explain to me the difference between TIG and ordinary welding? since i dont know much about welding.

You could also get it coated or coat it yourself if rust is a concern.

Any decent muffler shop can make you a good catback. Find one that has a mandrel bender and a good welder (as in a person who welds well) and go for it.

I had my local shop do a custom 3 1/2 inch for my twin turbo stealth and I love it 400 bucks but it is 3 1/2 inch which was a bit harder to work with then smaller pipe. I'm going to have them do my 1.8 t as well, not sure what kind of muffler to go with though.

I wish companies such as miltek would sell mufflers only. :(

Mufflers for less in south Florida on 441? If that is the one they did my exhaust a couple of years ago and they did a pretty good job. Get a 3" now if you plan on going BT so you dont have to do it twice. It shouldn't make to much of a diffence with the bends that they use because our exhaust systems are very simple.

so the guy there kept trying to get me to buy a 2.25 in exhaust and i was like wtf...i told the guy i need 3in all the way, cut off the 2.25 flange at my testpipe and weld on a 3in flange then complete a 3in cat back with no res......so tomorrow i am going back to see if he has everything

So i just got back from the muffler shop and i have to say they did a pretty good job at the welds and all the piping looks pretty solid....i went with a 3inch straight pipe to a Magnaflow muffler, it is loud...but it sounds good, just like any of these 1.8t's...there is a little drone but its not too bad i'll live with it...but it does sound pretty beast when you get on it...im overall satisfied so far :)

20 minutes? i guess you havent had to take the DP off a cat yet. it took my guy 5 hours to do mine. granted, bending the pipe itself shouldnt take too long at all.

FWIW, i paid 600 CDN for my 2.5" SS cat back and i brought him the muffler.

I am glad you went with the 3 inch. Now in the future if you upgrade thats one less thing to worry about.
