I am pink shrimp on QW. I have come to share my build. I would like to say thanks to Boris@solo motorsports who helped with this all.

The engine is pretty much done already, so I don't have the interesting pictures of the components.. but it has:

JE Pistons increasing displacement to 2.8
IE Rods
Full Supertech Valvetrain, guides, springs retainers, etc. Ready to rev out to 8500.
RS4 camshafts
Fully balanced with the fidanza lwfw.
Polished Crank shaft

The manifolds and turbo kit are from ARD previously known as gen jdm.

here it is before leaving to me:

now it is here:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3518/3721979698_9f512fda86_b.jpg

the engine is ready then, nice and fresh with a new tb.. I will install new sensors, new alternator, and other accessories.

THe GT28RS kit going on is from ARD:

In 2000 I had a wonderful ~479 whp car that was a blast to drive. I have always been trying to get back to that feeling that that car provided. These turbos should hit the spot I think, and produce more power than that previous personal benchmark.

In about 3 weeks I will install all this stuff, have Vast tune it and be done. I will share results as soon as I have them.

The capability of the B5 S4 is what makes it great. I hope that this build thread along with the others, will elevate the B5 s4 to a wider group of enthusiasts , who realize that the APB in the B5 S4 is very potent, with a great volumetric efficiency, greater even than the 2jz if my calculations are correct.

prove it! [:D]What numbers do you have? Bart, did you really calculate out the VE of the APB & 2JZ TT or are you just guessing? I like your build too btw, and think you're going to be very happy with that turbo. I would have gone with that size as well, but decided later to just go RS.

Haha, the 2JZ has always had a special place in my heart [:D]

Thanks, IMO the 2554's are the perfect size turbos for the 2.7 displacement.

haha, I would if I had more $$ I still need a clutch and some other misc stuff..

I figure I cant even really see the VCs with those plastic covers on anyways. I am trying to make this thing look stock as possible from the top, so I will still run all the plastic engine covers.

Hey Turbo Nerd, have you shared you car here before? I don't think Ive had the pleasure of seeing it.

What psi and whp are you shooting for?

I'm going to see what VAST can do with 91 and meth. I don't really have any specific power goal, but I would like the engine to create enough power to at least breach ~500 whp on an accurate dyno. That's a sort of low hurdle that I think should be achievable even on our shit 91....

Guru's results were very inspiring, although he has a much better base gas (94) vs our CA 91 which is almost more equivalent to an east coast 89... [:(] However I will be running meth on the pump file, so we shall see.

Now , on a more aggressive 109 octane file? Can't wait to see what happens there.

I will share all my results as soon as I get them.

As soon as I can take my dang vacation time, I will start this project up and finish it rather quickly, My Vacation days start in about 2 weeks, as long as nothing unexpected happens.

if you're going to spend your time hogging out the intake mani then you might as well just get an rs4. The runners on the rs4 are much bigger then the s4.

id like too, but problem is the heads are done already, installed on the engine and everything, I would have to redo the heads to match up to the larger intake ports of the RS4 intake mani. I also want to see what the stock setup on the s4 can achieve with these turbos, I think they will actually flow fine. P& P ing the new mani is pretty easy/fun, I have a friend who can weld it back up as well.

BUt if I had a few more grand to use, yes, I think I would just take the heads off and install the RS4 IM

I'm sure you'll still see plenty of gains with the stock mani ported. I didn't realize you had the built heads on there already. It definately wouldn't be worth pullin them off to remachine them to match. It would be minimal gains for the extreme costs involved. The build looks good though, can't wait to see results.[up]

yes stock heads, just the whole valvetrain has been replaced with supertech components, wish I had some pictures of the parts I think they are beautiful, maybe Boris can post some up if the has them.

Pink Shrimp. I saw your post on QW that you are no longer going forward w/ this build. I'm sorry to hear but, I totally understand. I think my wife would flip too if she went out to the garage one day and found that I ordered $5K worth of parts w/out her knowing. Although, if you ask up front, w/ a little convincing...sometimes you can get what you want. That's how I got my ST rear BBK for $3K.

hey thanks for understanding.. Yes guys I have very bad news, my aspirations of GT glory have evaporated. My wife doesn't mind the waste of money on cars.. but it is THIS car in particular that she hates. I dont want to go into why she doesnt like the B5 S4 particularly, but I think some of you understand why.

REgardless. I am going to move on and probably sell my stage 3 later this year.

SO i have this unused kit, in brand new condition if anyone wants it. I will post a for sale ad later, but if you want it just let me know,

again its an entire gen JDM/ AKA ARD kit with gt28Rs turbos, every piece is included, external wastegates, clamps, exhaust manifolds, downpipes, many parts are ceramic coated including the hot side of the turbos..
THe manifolds and downpipes are truly impressive pieces..

anyways if anyone wants the entire ARD kit: $6.5 K -- brand new everything, was never even installed on any car or engine, still in box.

Someone already expressed interest in buying my engine, but he hasn't paid yet, although I promised him priority, but engine: $5k--

The engine has the above listed parts, just assembling the parts would cost over 3 grand... and it is balanced, ready to just install...

If you buy both together to make it easier for me I would sell the whole thing for $10 K + shipping paid by buyer.

Thats probably the most affordable gt setup including an engine that will ever ever come on here that is NEW.

Potentially if you buy this, you could sell your own engine and offset costs accordingly. Boris gave me a good deal, so Im passing it on, Im not trying to make anything here, in fact I think Im losing a thousand or so at those prices.

If anyone is interested go ahead and pm me, sorry to let your guys hopes down, but I hope someone on here uses what I have and makes something impressive. Thanks again for the support, as I know I talk to many of you on QW.

someone asked me, but for clarification, the reason my wife hates my B5 s4 is because I have poured over $14 grand into it, and give it more attention than her, or she says that I do. I am not sure thats true.

well, I wanted to share with you some news so you guys can be proud of the B5 S4. Everyone derides B5 S4 owners as being poor or cheap, but I was able to get asking price for the kit, close to what I paid basically minus some shipping costs. The guy who bought it was one of a few different guys that wanted to buy it, although some were offering a tad less.

Regardless, I really dont think theres that many other audi owners that are ready, or capable of dropping 11 grand in cash all at once on parts that only are for more power, and arent even everything you need, I still needed a file to run, a better clutch, and a catch can system... so you guys should hold your heads up, B7 RS4 guys and a few others always seem to want to deride the B5 s4 as some sort of cheap juvenile car, but every single call I got about this kit was from someone at least 37 years old, and all had over ten grand , liquid ready to drop on their play thing. Granted theres always bigger fish, but still.

you should have been on point and hit Murphy (Murphy's Law) in the bloody head with it, then you wouldn't have to take the engine back out. [:D]

at any rate, hurry up and fix it already.

Had one small issue with one injector, but that's all sorted out... Seams like I'm of to breaking in the engine/clutch hehehe...

I'm amazed that I pulled it of [race] I didn't know shit about car mechanics before this project - still dont, but I'm getting there...

BIG THANKS to Mike and the guy's at VAST Performance, how's helped me more than one could ask for!

I'll post more vids & pics when I have something to show [evilsmile]

What was your cause? I want to avoid this if it's a common issue when reassembling.

Up until now, car's felt great, but I'm starting to get tired of brake in driving(i have about 4-500 miles on the odo) , so Friday afternoon I took the car for a longer spin, and it didn't go so well ;(
After about 15 minutes I noticed excessive white smoke coming out of the exhaust...
I stopped and stepped out to check - It smelled like burned oil.
I Drove home to see what was wrong - The dipstick was barely wet, and exhaust tips were oily inside. I guess I've lost about 1/4 gallon of oil thru turbos, catalysts and exhaust...

Haven't got a clue what's wrong. Sounds like bad turbos, but how's that possible :S

I'm depressed, it's -30 Celsius outside, water pipes have frozen, I have a cold, AND my back is hurting -lol- Not a good start on the new year...

I'm gona give the a4 some lovin and change place with the rs4 in the garage... Rs4 will have to wait... I'm feeling a third engine pull coming up ;( and that aint gona happen in a while...

Sorry guys!

pull your intercooler pipes and see if there is oil in their. It's not necessarily the turbo.

wow, that is really bummer there dude. I hope it ends up ok.

But I was under the impression that turbos don't need to be broken in, and therefore, your longer drive shouldn't be responsible for a turbo blowing, unless something else went wrong. Everywhere I have read says there is no need to break in a turbo more then one little 5 mile drive. Now the engine, etc and everything else, obviously different story...

Please keep us updated. Ball bearing turbos don't blow nearly as often as journal bearing, but its always possible there was a bad seal or maybe an oil line got clogged. If oil is coming out the exhaust, then obviously there are only so many places it can come from. Time to start tracing them back I guess.

Good Luck!

Shot in the dark, but it sounds like you might have forgotten your oil restrictors and you are pushing WAY to much oil into the turbos. I have done this before, the car turned the whole neighborhood into a white smoke field.

Curious to see what his oil feed line setup would be. Wouldn't be too tough add a restrictor to the setup. a bitch to get at, but do able.

How else would he have connected his feed to the CHRA if he didnt use a restrictor. Maybe just a regular adapter?

Sorry to hear! What did your oil lines look like? I've been looking into this topic a bit:
From TurbobyGarrett website
"Oil pressure entering a ball-bearing turbocharger needs to be between 40 psi and 45 psi at the maximum engine operating speed. For many common passenger vehicle engines, this generally translates into a restrictor with a minimum of 0.040" diameter orifice upstream of the oil inlet on the turbocharger center section. Again, it is imperative that the restrictor be sized according to the oil pressure characteristics of the engine to which the turbo is attached. Always verify that the appropriate oil pressure is reaching the turbo."

Does anyone KNOW what oil pressure a typical 2.7t produces at around 7k rpm? (Also keep in mind oil pressure varies a bit depending on oil temp and the grade of oil)

Sounds reasonable at mile 1 but the fact that it was OK for 4500 miles and now it starts smoking ? Does not sound right.

And that is a lot of oil.

Have you pushed the car any harder than you had in the past ?

Any whistling or whinny noises ?

Smoke at idle ?

Best wishes :-/

Oil feed lines and restrictors are fine, you can see them just left of the middle of this pic:
http://hem.bredband.net/gsvan/images/IMG_1229.jpg

Not pushed here at all... Only things out of the ordinary that happened prior to white smoke was that I left here out for about 2 hours in -25 Fahrenheit and filled here up(with shell v-power fuel, as always)...

No whistling or whinny noises, and yes, smoke at idle.

I'm gono take a look at it as soon as it warms up a bit here.

Thanks again guys!

I know it's a frustating part...

You need to read your plugs, witch I hope they arent platinun... get copper NGK honda plugs or bosh twin electrode copper plugs.

You need to do a basic compression test

If these are fine, do a leakdown test (check for blow-by) you can rent a machine I think.
If compression is bad, you dont need to do this part tho...

Try running with the PCV unplugged, but block the hole on the y-pipe, see if it runs better.

If not, you will need yo undo your downpipes to check for oil comming out from the turbos...

Sorry your going through hell with the build.

The restriction through the -3 oil line and the -3 oil restrictor allows 32-35 psi of pressure max, it's not the lines or fittings. I have the same line and restrictor on my car with zero issue for near 10k miles.

I would start looking at the motor, like mentioned earlier do a leak down and compression check.

Here's a pic of the catch can:
http://hem.bredband.net/gsvan/images/IMG_0030.jpg

There's some condensed water in there...

Today I refilled oil and took here for a spin... There's way less smoke now, and she didn't drink any more oil [:D] I'm convinced that it was a frozen PCV.

I hope this was the last drama for a while... [>_>]

Glad to hear it's nothing major. You might want to do an oil change relatively soon if there is water in your catch can and lines.
