View Full Version : How difficult to aim headlights?

I have the adaptive lights with the bi-xenons, but have noticed that the left one is a little bit higher than the right. If I recall correctly, this headlight was replaced under warranty by the previous owner, but it appears to not be aligned properly. Rather than hassle with scheduling and time of taking it back, is this something easy enough to do in my garage?
Thank you.

i second this request, i installed new headlights and they are not facing high enough
If it's anything like the B6's, there are tabs under the headlights that hold them up that can be adjusted, also, the headlights have a white tab that pops off and you can use a screw driver to raise & lower...and there's also the VAG option, but that's for both.

for them to be properly aimed you need the factory scan tool or vag-com

on the A3s, i was able to stick in a '+' screw driver and turn the knob.. it goes up/down or left/right

Do you mean left (passenger) when facing the car? If so then that is so that you don't blind oncoming traffic.
Either way, with adaptive xenons you will need a vag com cable. If you simply turn the screw it will just level itself again.

Headlight Adjustment
[Select]
[55 - Xenon Range]
[Basic Settings - 04]
Group 001
[Go!]
Activate the Basic Setting.
[ON/OFF/Next]
The meas. block field now shows "Wait" and should switch to "Adjust Headlights" then (this may take up to 10 seconds).
Adjust the headlights using their manual adjusting screws as referenced against a suitable aiming target.
[ON/OFF/Next]
The adjustment should now be learned.
[Done, Go Back]
Don't forget to check/clear fault codes afterwards.
[Close Controller, Go Back - 06]

the left one (drivers side) is actually aimed a little bit higher than the right.

Yea you will need the cable. The adjustment screws adjust the same thing as the motors do. So when you adjust it manually, the car will just level them back again.
Like someone said above, you need the cable to put it into learning mode, then adjust manually and then set it so that it knows thats where it should be.

Yours might have a black plug in it. Pull it out then turn on your lights, put a screwdriver in there and turn until you think it's right.

Quick note guys - all factory fitted xenon/bi-xenon (adaptive and non-adaptive) for NA included auto-levelling so you will need VCDS to enable the learning mode for setting headlight level. Adaptive provides a slight left/right movement in sync with the steering wheel at speeds greater than about 5-10 mph - it's nothing to do with level adjustment.
If it was a retrofit then adjusting the screws as indicated will work fine. Some other info at this link http://www.a4mods.com/index.php?page=webcontent/pages/autolevel.html&category=6
