Here's the chance for all of you experienced, jaded (flame-the-noob) modders to redeem yourselves. I have searched the forums far and wide. I have even looked at OTHER (inferior) forums for advice. I even asked former B7 owners and Audi technicians for advice...
I'm in the classic conundrum of all new modders (B7 2.0Tqm). Chip, suspension, exhaust, and not necessarily in that order (although maybe yes). Oh, and getting away from the 17" OEM wheels would be fantastic as well, although everyone puts that low on the list...
I want a new exhaust for performance/sound/whatever!
- Go ahead and drop $1000 for small performance gains
- Sounds cool as you drive past Beverly Hills High
(kidding, I love the sound of a good exhaust)
Good mod, but a lot of $$ for a little gain...
So I wanna chip. and I hear things like:
- Upgrade your DV, save yourself the trouble!
- What about an HPFP? You need that before you chip, save yourself the trouble!
- Know everything you're gonna do to the car before you make this decision, and then in spite of that, go with the closest shop!
Okay, so that's about $500 before base mod without any labor (although I'd do it myself). not including the psychic powers of your nearest palmreader to see what the future holds.
I want a better stance (incl. wheels). I'd kill to not be featured in 4x4 Monthly, so a suspension would be great!
- Don't do springs w/o shocks!
- Put in CO's and save yourself the trouble!
- RS4 Swaybar FTW! (this might be the lone cheap mod that everyone should do)
- Suspension comes before wheels, everyone knows that! (find me more than one pic post of the stock (non-Sline) wheels on a lowered suspension)
Okay, so we're talking about around $700 in parts for the cheap solution - and there's no pics showing what we get for the $$ and for the work that we put in (or for the $300 of labor that we pay for).
To all of the "PAY TO PLAY!" peeps, I hear ya! I know we're driving german luxury sedans/wagons. I make enough money to support the addiction, but c'mon! I get it that some of us spent $35k+ or more on the car new, but I just got one for much less. I've owned 2 BMW's and 4 different VAG cars, so I get it.
I've got my flame-retardant jammies on, so flame on if you need to, but I'd prefer comments about the so-called prerequisites to BASE MODS that I see all the time. To be clear, I don't want a prescription, I just want comments/advice.
Did I mention that I searched? [:D] Thanks!

and it looks awful.
i didnt take pictures of my stock wheels after i got my suspension but i can tell you it looked 100x better than the pictures i see of aftermarket wheels paired with stock (non-sport) suspension.

either go custom, Miltek, or AWE. b/w those choices you can't go wrong for exhausts.
So I wanna chip. and I hear things like:
- Upgrade your DV, save yourself the trouble! - tru...it will save you the hassle of replacing the stock DV.
- What about an HPFP? You need that before you chip, save yourself the trouble! - no it's not neccessary to upgrade this. if you do want to in the future you cant (stage 2+).
- Know everything you're gonna do to the car before you make this decision, and then in spite of that, go with the closest shop! - true..a close shop is a lot more convienient than having to drive all over town...

the pre-requisites will depend entirely on your power goal. If you are going with a big turbo, that would include fuel injectors, new fuel pump, new tune, turbo manifold, tubing, exhaust, intake, etc.
If you are going for just a chip tune, the pre-requisites would be an upgrade diverter valve. That alone will run the chip tune sufficiently.
You can continue to increase your performance mods, but you will eventually exceed the parameters of the chip tune and may need to get a new custom tune to support it.
To stress the point, the pre-requisites are entirely dependent on what your overall power goal is for the car.

Would the new revision D diverter valve be sufficient for up to stage II+ chipping?

Noone got played. I'm sorry, i refuse to be one of those 'haters' because he doesn't know how to properly search. Everyone started out the same at some point in time. I, on the other hand did not expect you to criticize me or anyone else that is determined to help anyone who may or may not have the knowledge or capability (if you will) to provide his own answers; thus the whole point of having a FORUM!
edit: you own a IS300. I like you, again.

I appreciate your point, Hyphy. But, as I've mentioned a few times now, no one has pointed me to a pic of stock wheels on lowered suspension... I know how to use a search engine... I hoped to credentialize myself a little bit by asking some of the right questions.

Heheheh .. not only that but the original post had no clear question, and goodness knows this forum has no clear answers to most questions. That said, the only thing that I saw in that post was a bit of a summation of various 'conclusions' on cartain points, with a request -- back to the same people -- for summary answers.
In other words a stirring of the pot all over again. The answers are not going to be any closer to the truth this time around. That said, this is not a criticism of the OP -- he has a right to ask the questions as he sees fit. To me it is clear that he did use 'search' a lot since he put forth the various summations thus far. His post just pouinted out one of the major truths about fora such as these -- there is more often than not, no one answer. [:)]

- Go ahead and drop $1000 for small performance gains
- Sounds cool as you drive past Beverly Hills High
(kidding, I love the sound of a good exhaust)
Exhaust although not very cost effective as far as price to power is concerned, does make the car sound incredible. You can search Youtube and find several vid's about exhaust to choose the sound you like best. I personally run a Milltek cat-back exhaust with a e-code TP, with a muffler delete. Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_B90tZR7aA
Good mod, but a lot of $$ for a little gain...
So I wanna chip. and I hear things like:Chip should be first, it will be your best power to price gain!
- Upgrade your DV, save yourself the trouble! The diverter valves on our cars will most likely blow once you attain the boost pressure from stage 2. Our car / DV is used to seeing 10-11 lb spikes, so when you are spiking 20-22, the rubber diaphragm will want to explode from all the extra air pressure.
- What about an HPFP? You need that before you chip, save yourself the trouble! The fuel cut in the B7 is inevitable with out a HPFP. I ran into this problem once i flashed stage 2 APR. I did the fuel pump, but later came to the conclusion that the APR software didn't run correctly on my car, so I flashed REVO. Long story short anything above stage 2 will most likely require you to buy the upgraded HPFP
- Know everything you're gonna do to the car before you make this decision, and then in spite of that, go with the closest shop!

- Don't do springs w/o shocks!
- Put in CO's and save yourself the trouble! I'm a fan of coilovers personally, but then again, i like to be really low. to each his own on suspension.
- RS4 Swaybar FTW! (this might be the lone cheap mod that everyone should do) Must do! Our pencil thin RSB is not very safe when spirited dirving is in your blood, trust me, I almost put my Audi into a wall before i got the RS4 RSB because of the understeer.
- Suspension comes before wheels, everyone knows that! (find me more than one pic post of the stock (non-Sline) wheels on a lowered suspension)

Another thing not mentioned is the PCV fix. Eurojet sells one, and lately a few people have been running oil catch cans. The PCV valve is also a piece that tends to blow when you get up to stage two power. I recommend you do this along with the DV at the time you go stage 2, just to save yourself from running like crap and leaking boost all the way to the shop to get them replaced.
Hope this info can be put to good use, and hope to see you as a regular here in the future [up]

Great feedback Geoff, thanks much. I hope I'm a regular here too - we'll see how much tolerance the wife has for my modding. It sounds like I should chip first and deal with DV and PCV issues later. I'm running an APR trial right now, and the power is pretty sweet. I have to make a conscious effort to not be at WOT constantly!
I have checked out those Youtube exhaust clips, and I also really like the Millitek system. AWE sounds great but I think it would get old, especially when I'm trying to be sneaky.
I've also decided that my first contribution will be to show people how much better (hopefully) our cars look with just a new suspension on stock wheels. I'll probably post pics next week or so - just in time for my new 710's that are scheduled to arrive at VMR next week.

Yeah by far the nicest tone of exhaust IMO would be the Milltek, and when you delete the mufflers = pure sex. But you won't be sneaking anywhere haha. There are some pics floating around of stockies lowered. I know my good friend (HID@Wolfcars) is running the stock ti wheels slammed on kw v1 coilovers.
BTW, V710's [up] great wheels, I loved them on my car, I had to sell them because I picked up a nice set of work wheels at an offer i couldn't pass.

I had my stock DV go after about 5k following my APR, but just put it in stock mode, went to my dealer, and had the new D- DV installed under warranty. 15k later, and no issues and i drive WOTADL [drive] no need to upgrade until yours blows tho.
And RS4 Sway... do it immediately following ur chip (easy DIY install - GET BRACKETS & BUSHINGS THO). then suspension, then exhaust or wheels. HPFP only really necessary when going stage 2
EDIT: And Geoff, ur car looks sexx! I almost like the look of the VMRs better tho IMO even tho they rnt as nice

Yes, thanks everyone for your input. I ordered the RS4 sway last week and it should get here today! I knew I needed it when I was exercising the car just after I got it, and experienced the understeer on an on-ramp. It would be an exaggeration to say that I almost hit a wall, but I really want that corrected.
Sway will be DIY if I can just get a day without rain! [=(] Can't wait to get these mods done so that I can post my first pics. [wrench]
