So I blew another coil pack. the first one (#2 cylinder) was at 32000 miles and now at 63,000 and change(#4 cylinder) Now the question I have are there 1) upgrades (not the $735 set from ECS) 2) I read in the b5, b6 about sti's. (plus and neg of theses) 3) Are the S4, RS4 packs compatible, and improve spark? I searched the b7, b5, b6 sites to see if there was the answer. Well TIA![:D]

Coilpacks just go out. 2 of mine went out within a month and I just replaced all of them. Haven't had any issues since. Not sure about the RS4 ones. Don't think they will work since it's a V8

So why do these go? It is not like it sees a lot of mechanical wear and tear? How much does one cost?

My SA said this is one of the reasons he advises not to wash the engines, since the coil packs tend to go.

I have also been asking if the 3.2 or 4.2 coil packs will fit, really just because I want red coil packs, but I never get an answer. They look the same and have the same electrical connector, so i would think they would. The only difference I can think of is possibly the length. I would still like to know, especially when those billet valve covers come out [:D]

I will try and check and see if the part numbers for the 4.2, and ours are the same. Again thanks for the feedback[:D]

Well the part numbers are definately not the same, I know that for sure. I think one of us is going to need to buy one and try it out to know if they will work.

It doesn't matter if the part numbers are the same or not because even if they aren't and didn swap over it will NOT be an upgrade for the 2.0T. Just because something is on a car that makes more power doesn't mean the part is better for a lesser power car. A turbo charged application creates pressure in the intake which isn't present in a naturally aspirated application. This added pressure makes it more difficult to make spark and this is seen in the coil packs as resistance and the higher the boost the higher the resistance. Since these are made for our engine simply swapping over coil packs from a NA application will most likely fail even faster. This is why modded 2.0T engines go through coil packs faster because the increased boost causes more resistance/heat in the coil pack which it was never designed for.

Coilpacks are pretty expensive but its not like they go out all the time. But its good to have an extra just in case it does. They run about $60-$70. Not sure if you can get them cheaper on line or not.

The first time my coilpack went out, i struggled to get to the dealer to get a new one but they didnt have any in stock at the time so my buddy (who is a VW tech) hooked me up with a coilpack from a 1.8T motor and it worked for the time being, car wasnt at 100% and i just needed it so i could get to work the next day but it worked.

JER[up]b thanks for the info. I love to learn, and know "WHY" and "HOW". My buddy runs the local VW dealership here so I get 20% off. so all in all it will be 70 euro or 97 bucks for two. I only need one but like you said Sal have an extra. I did find on ecs an upgrade. $735 for four. ouch. But it gave no real reason why so much. Just the standard red and it will work better deal. So I am not running out to get one. Down where I am at in Germany not many 2.0t modded cars. There alot of modded cars just not and B7. I wont be back to the staes for a couple of years so I have to probe you guys for knowledge. I think after the summer I will go BT though Sal. It will be AWE. Any issues with your coil packs now that you are BT?? Thanks again Audizine[az]

^^No problem. Well both my coilpacks went out right after i had the BT put on. But im sure they were destined to go out regardless. But since i have had my BT on i have had no issues. Had it on for about 5 months now and its great!!

APR, AWE. Both good reliable companies. Cant go wrong either way.
