Just as the tile states ive finally started my conversion yesterday will have some pics hopefully later this evening.....
So far ive got the rear of the car on jack stands got the exhaust off tires off, E-brake lines off, shocks disconnected sensors unhooked now i just have to try and get the brake assembly off that the hard part because the brakes have NEVER been of the car ever.... They arent exactly located in a prime spot to get at them to apply any significant force to brake them free so i sprayed them with wd40 (all i have untill i get to store for some PB Blaster) in hopes tolosen them a bit..If that doesnt work the ill just take the lines off the calipers and try to take them off when i drop the rear that way the shocks wont be in the way..
Dont say use an impact gun because i already tried that with a 1100lbs torque 1/2" gun and it didnt even budge it!!!!![down]

I respect your decision to go this route, but I think you're a fool for doing it.
The ONLY time I think FWD to AWD conversions are a cool thing, is when an AWD of the same car is not offered. Which is obviously not the case this time.
Regardless... Good luck and I hope things turn out the way you want them to.

BUT, this is going to kill resale value. Can you imagine trying to sell this as a quattro, and then carfax and VIN number showing its a FWD. Then having to explain to the potential buyer that you retrofitted quattro... that person is most likely going to run for the hills before you can even finish explaining.

Resale........ hell the car already has 111,000 miles on it by the time i go to sell her she will probably have close to 300,000 mlies on her.. Yea im not selling this car ever...... Ill own this car until the wheels fall of it.. Then itll be time for the duct tape and bubble gum...[:p]
And as far as sell this and buy a QT well i got a hell of a deal on some of the pieces so it made it worth it for me.. Plus i know exactly how this car has been run and what its been through because im the 1st owner of it...

Wow, and they didn't budge? Good luck on the conversion!
The bolts that wouldn't come off were the ones that hold the bracket to the wheel spindle i let them sit over night with the WD40 and then when i got the rear out of the car it was much easier to get at them because the shock or anything else wasn't in the way.....

Ok i got everything back together with pics from along the way for got to snap a few but no big deal... But to my question...
I have the STASIS QT Exhaust and when i installed it i first put the entire exhaust on with the bolts and all very losely and the tightened it from the front to the rear and i noticed the the exhaust rest very firmly on the rear crossmember bar ( That bar may not be there on a Qt if anyone wants to check for me) and the exhaust also rides against the rear CV joint gaurds. Is this common on the after market exhausts because the pipe diameter is larger than the stock one.
Where the 7" crossmember bar attaches to the body don't know it the QT has it or not but need to know.. Pic shows where it hits and there is a lot of preassure on that bar frpm the exhaust....

This is a wild mod. props to you for attempting it. hope it all works out - major contribution here! +rep!
Thanks man its been interesting thats for sure...
Ok so far the differences are:
1. There are atleat 1 of the two crossmembers on a FWD that are different. The Rear Crossmember may or may nor be the same as the QT front Crossmember
EX: The front Crossmember on a FWD is a flat bar and on a QT it looks to have a dip in it for accomidate the exhaust to hang a bit lower.
2. There is an exhaust hanger that attaches to the mid muffler that isnt on a FWD but is on a QT so to the dealer for that little item...
3. The E-brake cables for a FWD are longer than a QT's cables so they will be replaced. Now it not totally necessary to replace them as i was able to route them as they origianlly were but on the driver side the cable can't exqctly fit around the fuel tank so it cuts across the bottom of the tank and hangs about an inch from the tank. (It works but its to low for me so they will be replaced)
4. The fuel gauge....... Its not working [headbang] because i still need to figure out this little electrical issue. It reads full even with just 5 gal of gas in her...Or i guess i can get a fuel pump with the sender built into it... Anyone have one they want to donate to me??? [:D]
So far the things ive listed are very easy fixes.. But i guess for the next person to do this they will know and can be better prepared with their parts list...Being that im the Guinea pib for the B7 model..[wrench][evilsmile]

hey, glad to see you finally started! As far as the exhaust goes, that little brace that it is hitting is definitely no there on quattros, but it should have quite a bit of clearance near the CV joints.. so there must be something wrong..
I would say try to remove and wiggle the rear subframe? Maybe the bolts are different than the FWD versions?
And also to everyone else bashing him on this..
1. This car is easier to convert than almost anything.. the engine is longitudinal.. the tranny is in the same place.. its just missing the stuff in the rear.
2. Its actually BETTER that he is converting a car that comes in quattro.. because all the parts are readily available and he can be sure that they all bolt up correctly.. a conversion on another car would involve all kinds of gears and linkage to get the power back.. and then it would still not have enough research to have the AWD working the way you want it to.
3. It would be much harder to go rwd.. because the car has a center differential and a front differential. you would have to invent your own rwd transmission.. which gets costly.
Viz if you need any help let me know.. I've had my rear end off my car before.. so I kinda still remember how everything goes.. also I can look through the repair manual for you. Good Luck!

So what? What's the point of "retro" modding AWD? Still stupid. In the end you just get what everyone else has from the factory - only your "retro version" will never officially have AWD when you run the VIN.
Why not buy a different car if you want Quattro. Lot easier, and will probably cost you much less if you are smart about your purchase and sale.

Do people understand this car is going all out BT ?
This car is never going back to the dealer to be sold as stock.
Its going to get the shit driven off it, then a connoisseur might be able to get its hand on it in a few years down the road.
I see true enthusiast are scarce ...

It was roughly $1500 for all parts.. Can be more if you don't shop around take your time to locate parts at good prices plus haggling a bit never hurts either...[>_<]

Do people understand this car is going all out BT ?
This car is never going back to the dealer to be sold as stock.
Its going to get the shit driven off it, then a connoisseur might be able to get its hand on it in a few years down the road.

So in my old age ive gotton a weeeee little bit wiser and came up with this!!
Its a 3/4" x 2' x 4' pressure treated plywood with two pieces of 22gauge plate steel bolted to the plywood w/wooden supports on the back to control flexing.. Works great with a hydraulic jack with good amount of space for movement....[up][:D]

Thanks for the compliments. I simply asked, why not buy a different car...
even if going big turbo, which sounds like it won't happen for a while. I understand if someone wants to do the conversion for the fun of it - is that the reason?
And I can understand going BT and doing that on your own - actual improvement.
I am not "smarter" nor did I say it can't be done. I am just asking why do it if you are not really making it any better than the stock quattro setup. Will this setup be better than the stock quattro setup?
I don't think I have ever ranted and raved about racing cars or being smarter. I have said in another thread that I don't think our stock tranny and stock internals can support 450hp...but I encourage all to try it and find out. That's been my only other criticism on this forum.
That said...I will not post in this thread again.

OK..To make it plain and simple!! I hope!!!
Q: Why not buy a different car?
A: Because by the time i sold my Front Wheel Drive car WITH 113,000 miles on it id get next to nothing say $10,000 for it And i would then end up having to add thousands of dollars say $10,00 ontop of the other 10 grand making 20 grand to get an All Wheel Drive car. So why not do the conversion for the 1500 and use the other 8500 on other mods!!
Make sense?? Ok lets move on to the next question shall we??
Q:I am just asking why do it if you are not really making it any better than the stock quattro setup.
A:Of course it wont be better than the current All Wheel Drive system BUT IT WILL be better than a Front Wheel Drive car WHICH is what i have now!
Get it?? Ok lets move on the statement you had ok??
Your Statement: I am just asking why do it if you are not really making it any better than the stock quattro setup.
A: Good thing i stated that i was putting in IE Drop Ins. AKA: Integrated Engineering Forged Rods...
Are we straight now?????
By the way i dont mind you posting just reread and think about what you are typing so we can avoid all this confusion of yours...Ok??

Yea a lot more difficult. But that car wasn't worth it in the end. The main reason was because the car would have lost too much of the structural rigitity and would have been too unsafe for the raod.

I think he's looking at your sig and seeing you have Stasis Exhaust, which would obviously be for an FWD since that's what your car is/was. He wants to know if you're altering the Stasis FWD exhaust system or just replacing it for a Quattro exhaust system.

Currently the car is drivable i just have the rear end the fuel tank and the exhaust in you don't need the drive shaft or tranny to be in to drive it because its still technically a FWD until i put the other 2 pieces in... Which will be on June 3 when it goes to the shop to have the rest done as well as a the forged rods will be put in as well as a few other goodies...[:D]
All in all the work that i did (Rear end, Fuel tank and exhaust)can be done in 3 days or less provided you have all the parts needed, and provides your not doing this with Major injuries like me.....[o_o]

scoobycarolan
05-27-2009, 09:09 PM
I was wondering about the feasability of RWD too, but the mechanics would be a bitch. The center diff is setup to send a percentage to the front. That would have to be swapped & custom. Then all the front driveline would have to be pulled to help get rid of the weight on non-drive wheels. Then a custom CO kit to accomodate the weight and power differences. Not sure, but do Stasis' Cup Cars keep quattro??

I think there are other elements of the engine/drivetrain that are too weak to support higher output aside from the pistons, like A cams (gets abnormal lobe wear)....just my novice speculation combined with how much time I spent browsing the boards, though. [:D]

Yes i'm goint to keep stock c/r.... As far as the pistons i "think" the pistons can handle up to 600chp... but again im not sure and i don't think anyone else is sure yet either on these motors...

I'm fully aware of other limitations, I'm just curious if it's been determined yet. Either by failure or by testing.
Installing rods isn't a very big task(at least to me), and I'm only curious if that's the only mechanical weak link in the short block preventing 500+bhp builds.

Nice job dude, On the fuel issue.I tried messing with it on vag-com and it seems to work right now when it gets half way its still off. Im going to take my stock FWD fuel sending unit and install it in the quattro tank and see if it fits.

Congratulations for your work. For Fuel gauge quattro systems use 2 sensors (one for each side means each part of fuel tank) So i will post the wires that you need to connect to instrument cluster and coddings that you neeed to do.
2 wire to connect to instrument cluster won't hurt :D

Kind of a necrobump... but while it's up here..
This has been an awesome build! Props for all of the work. I know NC has been getting some snow this season so I'm sure having quattro is an awesome thing to have.

From my understanding there is a complete seperate wiring harness for AWD cars... As of now my fuel gauge is roughly 50 miles off because of the new LPFP I have and the way it sits in the tank.... But id still be interested to see the schematics if you have them.... Thank you.
