I know for a Fact that Resumes should not be more then 1 page. This was told by my cuz who is a Mechanical Engineer with a Masters, He says that if its 2 pages they dont even look at it, they throw it away

x2 ^ It needs to be one page only. Also you need to include you education on there as well. I would look on word for a resume templates, they have a bunch of different styles versus centering everything with bullets.. just my 2cents.

I think it all depends on the industry you're trying to interview for. I could help you if you were looking for something in business (accounting, finance). Otherwise, you should generally try to use action verbs to start out each line.

I can send you a resume to see what kind of format I use. PM me!

x3 one one page and education

most recent work experiences are usually preferred. I was also taught by my mentor that stating the dates/years along with those experiences are good as well.

Good luck Mo!

good luck mo! i dont want to sound like a parrot..but i too have 12+ years of experience and I was able to consolidate to one page. Maybe perhaps you should have a summary/overview section on top the highlights your best qualities/strengths *shrug* then go with your most current job..etc.

Thanks again guys and gal ;) If anyone has a resume I can look at please send it to my email in the sig below. I could relate to something technical like IT or engineering obviously. I have seen a few web sites for techy type resumes and all examples are in 2 pages.

Im still trying to figure out how to fit it all onto one page. Im getting some good ideas though. So far I have went from an objective to just a headline statement...

"A results-driven Telecom Engineer with demonstrated success in the design, implementation, and development of large-scale enterprise applications within the Telecommunications industry. Depending on the industry, this is mostly definitely not true. In my industry, for example (systems engineering), having a 1 page resume is only really possible if you've only been working for like 3 years.

I do interviewing probably once a week, and have never thrown away a resume because it was more than 1 page, and dont know a single person who would. I look funny at resumes that are like 6 pages, but still dont throw them out.

The 1 page rue is NOT gospel or universal.

My dad has taken months of classes on this stuff.. and the teacher told him it should be 50/50 of white/black. Meaning don't use a lot of paragraphs, keep everything short and concise.

Cut it to one page. I'd also move your technical skills & certs to the very top. People mostly likely will not get to page two, let alone the bottom of page two.

I prefer to see your skills/achievements listed under which job you did them at. Anyone can just list a bunch of "good qualities"

Try to arange it as follows, and see if you like it.

Name & Contact Info.
Certs & Tech Skills
Job 1 w/relevant achievements
Job 2 w/relevant achievements
Job 3 w/relevant achievements....

A cover letter won't hurt either.

Again, thanks guys. I have a pretty solid foundation of information to start with.

one page

and i would have my first line be my goal ie:

I am looking for employment in.....blah blah blah
but have it sound professional

1 page
education
experience

format it so people want to read it, and remember that it's ultimately you selling yourself.

My friend is a corporate litigator $$$$ and did mine for me so I can apply at law firms. I was surprised how simple yet informative it turned out without any clutter.

Thanks for the input. At first I had something like that and changed it to more of a headline rather than "hi im looking for work in X industry". The research I have done on IT based resumes usually point to an objective as someone just getting their foot in the door i.e. college student.

Also most tech or engineering resumes seem to avg out 2 pages. Im still trying to re organize it and put things in different places. I havent worked on it since this morning though. Got caught up in errands and open house at my sons school.

just curious as to how you're claiming to be an engineer on your resume without any education to back it up? might look hypocritical if they ask where you got your engineering degree and you have to tell them you dropped out of the 8th grade

oh and if you are going to have fragment sentences there should be semi colons not periods in between.

The field im in there reallky isnt any degree for. Alot of it is based on certifications from each manufacturer like being certified to workd on Cisco routers or Microsoft networking. Im in the phone business and have went to certification classes for Avaya, Nortel, ESI, and partial Cisco. I have been certified as an "engineer" on certain Avaya product, Nortel, and ESI systems.

I have held the job title of Telecom Engineer at two seperate companies in the past because thats what I do. I engineer telephone systems and alot of other fields in the Telecommunications industry.

Crazy, I would never tell any employer about dropping out in the 8th grade. Who the hell asks for HS diplomas anyway? Its not like im trying to get into the business for the first time.

As far as semi colons go, I have yet to see a real need to use those in my resume. I know they belong in sentences that carry on or complete with two sentences in one. I just dont see the use of it on a resume. They dont teach ";" in junior high ;)

The single page thing is something to stick by if its 1990. You can go over 1 page no problem, esp in your industry, I'd stick to 2 though. Don't go to 3 pages.

Have a good objective.

Don't just list your skills, but elaborate (succinctly) on how you benefited your former employers. What did you do to improve their bottom line?

Its not just about you, and how great you are. Its about how you are going to help them be a better company.

Talk about how you were proactive, and not just the monkey that crimped wires.

Definitely list all of your certs. Cisco, etc.
