Hello, I'm a new member and I have a '03 A6 2.7t with xenon and I need both headlights. The question is will the older 99-01 lights fit and what's the differance with the lights. I can find the older ones much cheaper and if they fit it really doesn't matter what they look like as I've never notice the differnace between the two cars.
Thanks for the info I'm sure I'll be back with many questions in the future.

They won't fit. Different shape/longer/90mm projector vs 60mm. You'll need these

They look nice but money is tight right now that's one reason I was looking at the older ones but since they don't fit I'll have to see if I can find some used ones. I already posted a wanted ad on here but if anyone knows someone with a couple good used lights let me know I have the ballast and bulbs just my housings are cracked.

I have heard of people using the 03+ lights on 01-. They fit, but they have a gap. I don't know if you can do the opposite? what exactly happened to the stock lights?

The car was in an accident and busted both headlights. I'm really looking for a couple good stock lights. They don't have to be perfect and I still have all the guts in mine so if anyone has some without levelers, ballast, bulbs let me know. Also if anyone know of a good set of aftermarket lights I may also go that way as long as they are still xenon and use the self-leveling.
Thanks

none of the aftermarket stuff is going to be self leveling. You are going to have to search it up on Ebay, but I have never had much luck with that. The newer stuff tends to be overpriced.

Yeah, I've been searching Ebay and have not had any luck. That's why I signed up here to see if I could find something and get a little more info on what would fit the car. I did buy some aftermarket ones on ebay and ir turns out they where older one and now I'm fighting with them to return them.

What did you buy? -- I'm looking for pre-face lift xenons (2000-2001 C5). I've actually seen some for your year but didn't pay attention since I need the slightly large housings for mine. I'll keep you in mind in my search, but I think I'm about ready to give up and get new ones.

You're probably going to have to goto ebay.de, but then you'll pay through the nose for shipping, and be lucky if the guy speaks English, but most do.

The ones I bought just said 99-03 so I guess they should fit your car. They are euro xenon all clear with the city light. The only problem is one had the piece broke off the inner housing where the leveler would go but it just had a fixed mount. I think it could easily be glued back on even with out taking the lens off. You should be able to reach it to glue it back on. I'll see what happenes with ebay I've already but in a claim with paypal but if it doesn't work out I could make you a really good deal. They are xenon with the ballast and eveything so they should be plug and play.

Might want to check the local junk yards too. I lucked out with some stuff before for my A4.

Got to be careful with the ebay stuff. Some don't know what they've got and don't know the fitting issues between model years. It's hard to tell from the pic because the top isn't PRECISELY aligned with the bottom(maybe someone can pshop it), but the edge by the grille for the top housing is shorter at the bottom curve than the housing on the bottom which is longer and ends in a point.
Top fits facelift '02-04, bottom '99-late '01.

Well, as noted here, there is no one assembly for that span of years, but let me know what happens after ebay claim (your best route). I already have one with bad leveller so housing that's right is important factor for me. I don't really care about clear or amber -- both work fine with ming. I'll keep eye out for post facelift during my search.

Fleet, Do the E-codes have auto-leveling? And what else would I need to make them work?As far as the bulbs go do they still use the D2S? I've been looking and so far nothing used and they are just way too much to buy new ones.

All "legal" xenon housings from Germany have autoleveling, it's the law, unlike the lax regulations here. They're plug & play unlike some housings for the A4 crowd which required a harness. These are no fuss. They use D2S and have the better feature of using the xenon as high beam also for the '02+ facelift. Prices for the past 6 some years haven't really come down, either for rarity or popularity. But you think these are high, just imagine what the A4 modders have to pay for the OEM ones, not the knockoff DEPO and whatnot. $1,400 should make your head spin.

Hey Fleet....Do those lights your selling have bulbs and ballast with them? I don't see the ballast or the wire for a D2S connection? Do they have the motors inside already or the plastic plugs that hold it secure?

They don't come with the ballast or xenon bulbs, just the H7/turn/city light. The back cap hasn't been cut open for the wiring since it's new, and they have the motors. The ones I installed make minute level adjustments when turned on, they don't go through the full up/down test like they did when my rear level sensor failed and the driver side would dip to the ground.

Is it possible to convert halogen housings to xenon with self-leveling. All I really need is the housings. I have the projectors, wiring, and everything else.

Self leveling requires the sensors in the front and back suspension. It is a pain in the ass to retro in. I have helped someone do it in an A4. Everything else can be swapped in, just forget the motors and leave the plastic plug things that keep them straight.

My car has self leveling. I was asking if I can convert 02-04 halogen housings to xenon with self leveling. I have all the projectors, motors, etc. from my lights, all I need are the housings. I didn't know if the projector was the same size and if mine would bolt in and the leveling motors would fit in the light.

oh. Yeah dude, everything should just bolt right in. The halogen lights should have a plastic plug where the arm of the leveling motor connects to the projector housing. Just remove the plug and swap in the motor.

Okay, so I'm gettting screwed by ebay and paypal. They will let me return the lights and get my money back but I have to pay return shipping to Hong kong and the cheapest I can find still makes it not worth it. So I'm noe trying to sell the lights I have. My question is can I put Halogen headlights in my car and just pull the fuse for the leveling and have them work without any codes?
Thanks

You don't have to pull any fuse for leveling. If the connector for the motor inside a xenon housing isn't pluged in, the motors won't work for both housings, and no codes will pop up at all, but since these don't have motors in them anyway, there's not that issue either.
Found out it's difficult work to retro the gut huh? There was a writeup on AW about someone who put '02 guts into a '00 housing. Didn't look quite right for some reason with bigger lenses and short guts in an oblong housing. There was a slight gap at the side but only noticeable when looking at the side.

I can't get stock aftermarket 02-04 halogens for about $450 so I thinking about just going that way for now. I was also thinking about just buying the halogens and putting my projectors, levelers, etc. in their housings. I could find any info saying if my projectors would be a direct bolt in. I don't have a problem removing the lens from a new set if my projectors will fit. And I just can't afford the price tag for the oem xenons right now
Any ideas?

First let me say thanks to everyone for all your help I'm sure I'll get all this going sometime. The link you sent was to put the bi-xenon inside of the older housing. My question is can I buy 02-04 halogen housings and bolt my projector in? My inner housing is also bad but the projector, levelers and wiring is still good. I just didn't know if the halogen projector was the same size and has the same bolt pattern as my bi-xenon projector?
Thanks again

I would think so since they're both 90mm lenses. I've seen '02 housings on some parts websites for 300+ each I thought. Pretty expensive.

The xenon housing go for about 360-600 each plus shipping and I can buy a pair of halogens for 450 shipped

I ended up buying the set of halogens. Now I need to sell the xenon's I bought off ebay. They should fit pre-facelift cars. When I got them the inner tab where the leveler would go or the plug was broken off on both lights. I have epoxyed them back and seems to be holding great. I paid about $330 ship and will sell them for about $275. Paypal was going to refund my money if I paid return shipping which was about $200 so I was still going to be out that money. If anyone wants the lights let me knkow and I can send a link to the lights.
