View Full Version : Picked up f/r S4 brake setup, have a question..

So after extensive research on what to go with and weighing options and keeping price in mind, I decided to go with S4 f/r setup. I picked up a set of front rotor/caliper/upright assembly and rear rotor/caliper assembly.

Now when I came home and took a deeper look at it, I noticed that the wheel bearing on one front side is totally shot, broken. I am not sure what potential effect this has (I assume I can take my A4 bearings and put them in there?) but will this matter in my conversion?

just go buy a new bearing and do it while your in there. you dont want to be swapping bearings from one car to another, not to mention they go bad often enough anyway. replace it while its all apart and save yourself the headache later.

thats part of the outer CV joint haha :]

if you look on the opposite side of that, there should be a bolt thats 19MM i think? (someone correct me if I'm wrong) and you'll need to break that loose, then that "bearing" you're thinking about will come right out.

It's the CV and you can still see part of the CV Boot, haha.

Yeh thats part of the cv axle not your wheel bearing.

Do you live in Atlanta?

I have done this swap before so if you have any questions, I can probably answer them.

haha being that i replaced cv booths before i should know better lol.

anyway, do you think it's find to just transfer my CV joint (would it be the same part as the S4 one?) into the housing?

I presume it would be as you're not the first person doing this swap and I've never heard of people running into issues for the S4/A4 CV Threads not matching

All right guys I am on the brink on starting this work as my current front pads are GONE!

First: To address geeky's post, I am running into two different arguments.
I thought that the S4 hub housing itself was bigger. Therefore, a bigger wheel bearing (from a 2.8q or 01 1.8t) would be needed to fill that housing.
So if I use the bigger wheel bearing, there's no way that my axle (MY2000) would fit into that bearing, right? That's why I'd need 2.8 axle.
Somebody correct me if I'm wrong?

Second: Let's say I'm getting 2.8q axles and tranny flanges. Good idea to swap drive axle seals, like these?

You need the 2001 1.8t axles or any 98-01 2.8 A4 axles as they fit into the S4 hubs. Earlier 1.8t axles will not.
