View Full Version : My steering column started smoking

So Im driving home from school for the weekend and my steering column starts smoking. Its only 40 degrees outside, I had the air set at 70 degrees. All my guages seem normal. It wasnt billowing, just letting out wisps of white smoke every once and a while. I tried feeling with my hands the entire column and the and nothing was more than warm to the touch. I did have my lights on. Anyone have any ideas why it would start smoking? Thanks.

My girlfriend left her hazards on in her explorer once for 15 mins and the steering collumn begin to smoke and you could see a small little glow inside (pin head size) near some switch. Needless to say she got that fixed pretty quick. I would take it somewhere and get it checked out, thats not soemthing i would gamble on.

Try checking and cleaning all grounds in the area... 98% sure that is the problem... The other 2% is telling me it is a short somewhere...

I had an issue like this in my show truck after first replacing my stering wheel with a race one. It was simply an electrical ground that had come loose. Have the wheel removed and check it out. It can get serious.
