Hot daaammn. This is quite the project, my friend. So far it looks like you've made some EXCELLENT choice (particularly the color.....GT3 orange is SO sexy), and the VR6 option is obviously a great choice. I just love the fact that all this work is going into an avant! FINALLY we have an avant in the project forum!!!
You are def reppin the Euro wagons properly. Well done man, and post LOTS of pics of your progress

I actually had the chance to buy a S4 Stage III in Nogaro blue and I turn it down because of this came along. I always wanted a Avant for a project but couldn't find one. So when it came along (even with all the work that had to be done) I grab it..
So I got to do what I want, with what I wanted.. Hope you enjoy this trip

I like the badge.. Specially after I bought it new!!.. I will take it under consideration removing it..
I will take more pics of the rear lights.. But they are ease to make, its the stock one with a Dark film over it..
Thanks for the kind words. Tomorrow I will try to take pics of the interior with the buckets (just fitment, they should be ready to paint by this week) and the VR6 engine. I am actually in a bind on this one..
I have currently a 24V VR6 in pieces. I would have to purchase a few pieces to put it together (might even purchase rods, but it would take longer to do it, economics would make this project over 2500 and 3 months more to built). Also I would have to make the custom intake manifold. However I can go with a 12V, purchase the intake manifold from SPA, headgasket with ARP bolts and make my Horsepower Goal with some room to spare (running the GT35 turbo)
So you can make me choose.. 24v or 12V

I'm going to go 24v. Seen cool things with that vvt

i Really have started looking into this swap. you already know how you are going about this? stand alone EM? VR6 ECU and harness? we need details!!!
24V will flow more overall, but, obviously, costs more. the 12V motors can be had very cheap and there is always a surplus of them floating around. if it were me and i had all the money it seems you have (LOL), i would do it right with the 24V. if you decide on the 12V (which makes more sense from an economic standpoint), you could just get a good port job done to it to open it up some for better airflow.

034 has run this set up in their car.Stand alone will be the way to go with my setup.
You can run the Stock cars computer for your dash and use the stand alone computer for your cars engine.. as I progress to this I will discuss and share on the fidings.. I am really liking the 12V solution because I been working with this for some time.. and I am getting desperate to run the car.. I might even work on the 24V later ..

Just throwing and ecu and wiring harness isn't going to just work. There are certain things that will give you problems. You will also need to go through each harness and know what resistance is supposed to be seen at each sensor from each harness to make sure they are the same.
Papa Stone
03-15-2009, 12:03 PM
solo.. I am not understanding your observation... why won't it work? Worst case scenario is that I have to buy a new dash . I am only thinking on buying the 034 Stage IIb product because of its integration with audi hardware..
http://www.034motorsport.com/product_info.php?cPath=22_46&products_id=37
I have been reading alot about this product and have found that it integrates with our vehicles very good. However I will ask and make sure of the problems it will bring before purchasing it.. I have seen alot of audi's work with these..
solowb5
03-15-2009, 12:34 PM
Of course the IIb will work, but I'd go IIc. I wasn't a fan of standalone. I was saying swaping in the oem hardware such as the engine harness and ecu will be trickier then theorizing. The 034 IIb will work on any rated sized engine. Standalone is standalone. It will run any engine. 034 just offerers a pre-made harness for the vag engines. It seems you know or have the hook up on body work, but it seems you should call 034 so you can decide what you really want and can do.

Thanks I just PM you on this.. I am lucky with my built. We have the only Mechanical/Bodyshop in Puerto Rico with full engine services and a 7000 square foot facility. My partner is very good in engine, and electronics, but this is the first time we have started with a built of this level. and it will be a first on a Audi in this Island.
BTW, the only reason I would keep anything OEM is to run the Stock Dash in the car, and for what I read the OEM ECU is needed too run the panel.

As slowB5 has said,
you will need the Stage IIc system.
Stage IIb does not have enough drivers to control 6 coils , 6 injectors and 2 VVT solenoids.
My personal opinion is to go with the 24V VR6 motor because they are OEM motor mounts that work with the motor.Building an intake manifold is not an issue.I like the SPA 12V manifold but the units that show up on ebay need severe casting reworking and when you see what 600US+ gets you ,you begin to question whether it was worth it.
My advice for the turbo manifold on a budget is to get OEM manifolds and just run a Y-pipe.The VR motor allows you to have that room.
I added you to msn so feel free to message me anytime you want.

Issam convince me to go 24V VR6 so ... this will take a little longer but my end date is for a European Fest @ the end of the summer..
Now we can look at 600whp on high boost and 109oct fuel. I am also looking into two turbos.. either a Borg Warner S362 or a S364.. they seem to be very capable for this HP!!
... You see there is this friend of mine with a ZO6 (with 520whp) that has called my car a Pumpkin cake.. So I have taken it a little personal and I want to Kick his A$$ with a WAGON!!

nice nice car. looks way better than when it started. im not sure how much fabrication is needed for the engine mounts or starter, but i remember a discussion on here about using the 24v block vs the 12v block. iirc the ideal solution is the 12v block with the 24v head, because apparently the 24v block gets hairline cracks at over 5-600 hp?
is the head from the 24v salvageable, because that would be the route i would go imo. great built and look forward to some updates. peace.

Well, I had this engine rolling in the shop in Pieces.. They are some parts I need to get but is a full head and block from a 24V Is missing 3 rods but the pistons are there. This was a done deal even before I had the car . The engine actually has a Story behind it..but I will leave it for some other time

well, the S362 or 64 is a great selection for the use because I won't be breaking parts all the time( real problem when you get into a HP that stock parts are not suppose to be reaching). This is not for breaking records with a GT40R plus cost .. I am already in a 10G built!? Have you read about about the new Borg Wagner turbos??@!! They are suppose to be great, as good as a Ballbearing. Anyway 500whp is more than enough for me.. More than any audi over here.. plus still got VP, Methanol and NOS! [;)] just kidding

Hopefully my block will be ready and I will order the ARP bolts from 034 (plus a few things). Freeking tax season, has been a killer in our business these days!!

well, the S362 or 64 is a great selection for the use because I won't be breaking parts all the time( real problem when you get into a HP that stock parts are not suppose to be reaching).
Think of the HTA turbos as BW extended tip turbos with ball bearing center sections. The best of both worlds.

is a big leap!! The Seats were repainted Black, alot of Lexol! and the rears were painted GT3 orange..
Next step
Get the seat brackets to install them
get my engine back, finish the first order of parts, and put the engine together with
a)C2 spacer (got it)
b) ARP rod bolts
c) ARP Head Bolts
d) new bearing caps
e) new toureg valve cover
f) Toureg oil pan
-- once that step is done is when things get serious. I want to put this engine in the car in 3 weeks.. just to see it !! Hopefully by then I'll be able to get the parts ...

The toureg valve cover is flat on the front side of the cover. This is needed for hood clearance. The Oil pan is cut differently so you can clear the cross member

Because I'm assuming that you have to cut the front since there is a tranny adaptor plate put in(moving the engine forward more then it already is going to be with the vr). So getting a shorter tranny could eliminate this or minimize it.
Are all 01x tranny gears interchangable?

they can make the power thats not the hard part its putting it down without destroying the drivline thats the hard part. my buddy had an s2k putting down 411whp on the wastegate. he ate a trany and a rear diff. the rear diff is the weak part in the car. it was scary fast, kinda like riding in a motorcycle.

That turbo is 700 hp capable. That is the one I chose. The limiting factor on the 24v is the head. I've noticed that most people are making 4-450 fwhp but, when the r32 head is put on the power seem to limit out where your pockets stop lol.

All avants are Quattro ..
I use 996 sport seats and I need to make brackets for these.. which I have not have any time to do anything these past months. I been watching the built for the engine over the B5 S4 so I can see what we need to make this a reality..
I created some brakets to put together with the car's original brake brackets. Also you need to create a new brake line for this (which is no problem if you know a good shop that does lines, I just took a sample and they make the line").
The paint is normal car paint with with 93 glasuri clear and two heat cycles on a paint oven..

just the parts to put the engine in the car is close to 2,000. Then you have to find a way to start it up.. another 2000 (or more in the ECU). Then you have to get your turbo stuff on and everythihng else..
My budget on the VR6 was easy 9,000 and I was doing all the labor, and the welding!!
btw I might still do it, having the Passat helps me on the install because I can use it without having to stop the Audi, but is a long term plan.. We already started the car and I am just waiting for a few parts and hoses to get to Puerto Rico. One of the problems are that the hoses and not available in Puerto Rico in black (always in blue), so I called http://www.siliconeintakes.com so I can get the correct color..

I just saw this post. The stock 24v VR6 head flows better than a heavily modified 12v head. Now take a look at the power people are making on 12v heads and ask yourself if there is really an issue there worth worrying about.

I think you mean you ordered a clutch with a unsprung disk vs a sprung disk for a single mass flywheel. The clutch for a aluminum flywheel is the same for a steel flywheel since both are single mass and cut the same.
Just posting that so no one gets confused and things there is a clutch kits for aluminum flywheels and different ones for steel.
