If the local shop isn't familiar with Audis or just doesn't really want to do the install, they're going to quote you a ridiculously high number.

My local dealer just quoted me 3 for the whole shebang! I might just have them do that and my RS4 rear sway at the same time.
Jason, I'm in Albany, NY. Jack Daniels is your closest dealer and that's like 3 hours drive each way. I was looking at your map and it looks like there's a new CT dealer coming in, who is it? Also, so you suggest upgrading to the rear RS4 sway with the SS kit, or is it setup for the stock (in this case sport) swaybar?

The local shop is called The Bavarian Rocket Scientists. They pride themselves on setting up track porsche's, but work on all kinds of Teutonic autos.

I can directly vouch for this. I had suspension work done at Stasis' HQ in Sonoma at Infineon, they charged 4 hours - in fact, they had another tech with extra time so it only took 2 hours, but x2 people working = 4 hours.

I definitely recommend upgrading to RS4 rear sway with SS, just did mine this weekend and it feels like a real car now lol. It eliminates most of the body roll and just makes it feel more solid overall. Takes about an hour or two to install with a couple sockets, swivels, and extensions and is one of the best mods you can do in general for this car.[up]
And yes 8-9 hrs is rape, Supreme Power did mine in about an hour or two.

If you have stands, you could always try the install yourself. I haven't done the suspension on the audi yet, but have done coil-overs on my old vw and it was relatively straight forward. Plus, you'll always be more careful with your car than some guy at the shop. [up]

Shit, my mech. had his trainee, under his supervision, doing mine and I watched them do it in under 1.5 hrs. 8-9 sounds like bullshit.
on a lift, with the correct tools and 2 people, 4 maybe 5hrs max if they done it before and know what they are doing. i have done 4 suspension installs on our cars, 3 of them i was on my own...a lift with proper tools helps.
might have additional time for adjustments / alignments?

Hey, you live near me. I would call broadway auto. They have a new location. Or there is another guy in the area that does a lot of audi work out of his garage. He did one of my installs.
Lol its like a 3.5 hour job (w/ spring compressors)...probably less if you just drop the subframes (but that's not a good way to do it)

i did coilovers, rotors, pads, and rear sway in under 7 hours on a lift with no experience with audi suspension or brakes so id say a shop in 9 is a rip.

Ugh, I let Broadway do the kit (H&R / Eibach Pro Kit) on my B6. I had to pay another shop to do the alignment after he SWORE there was nothing wrong. They refused to see me right away and my steering wheel had to be at 1 o'clock to drive straight.
No Dice. I think I'm going to drive down to Jack Daniels in NJ and have them do this and an RS4 Sway. Alan seems like a VERY cool guy and they have experience setting this up.[drive]

Yea, especially after seeing the resounding response to this thread.......you should go down there, but NOT for your install. What I WOULD do, is go back and yell at them/tell them what assholes they are for thinking you could be duped like that, then tell 'em your gonna smear their name on a reputable enthusiast site after you take your money somewhere else.
As you may be able to tell, I have no pity or restraint when it comes to an auto tech "professional" who tries to take advantage of the common driver, who they think doesn't know better. I think it should be cracked down on more, personally.

Crack down on what? They're running a business and provided a quote. If the OP thinks the quote is too high (obviously, he does), he should take his business elsewhere. Free market capitalism at its best.[up] No need to blast a business who never touched his car. A shop that specializes in Porsches probably makes a good deal of money on each working bay. If this A4 is going to be taking up a bay in their shop, they probably figure they'll make it worth their while. If you're going to a premium shop, than you're going to pay premium prices.
In reality, a kia dealership could probably do the work for you just as well as anyone. Suspension components don't vary that drastically.

Did I miss where he said it was a Porche-specialty shop?
Also, I don't really understand what the type of car has to do with it. They know how long the job takes, and have a rate to charge. If they want to charge a higher labor rate/hr because they specialize in high-end cars, then that's one thing. But trying to claim a job will take twice as long as it actually does is BS, and I'm callin' it. As far as I'm concerned, that's as bad as attempted fraud. Fortunately, the OP had the know-how and sense to check with a community such as Audizine first and made a better choice.
There's a difference between free market capitalism, and swindling an honest customer out of their money. In the end, this is merely what I would do - I'm not saying I'm an authority on anything, this is simply my opinion on the matter. I tend to have a big problem with people trying to take advantage of others, and it sure sounds like that's the case here.

It's up to the consumer to judge whether or not a price is fair. Forcing businesses to standardize their margins is a slippery slope, ie. Prices and labor costs are not constants in differing areas. They know what the job is going to cost them, parts, employee pay, loss of working bay, etc, but they may decide that they don't necessarily need this particular job for whatever reason (high customer volume, high paid employees doing remedial work, etc.), but it is their right as a business to price a job as they see fit. Maybe they only have a high-paid engine management specialist available to do the job. That employee's time will be billed differently. What I'm saying is, you don't know the circumstances in the shop...all you know as a consumer is that this price is more than I wanted to pay, and so....I'll look elsewhere.
The same applies for any contracted work. It's the individual's responsibility (not a third party) to determine the value of the service as compared to the price...as the OP is doing...[up]

Edited - nevermind, not worth it. Agree to disagree on opinons regarding the nature of this shop's time estimate.
OP - In the end, I'm just glad you checked first because that was gonna be a rip-off. It also sounds like you found a good place to go, so the next thing I wanna see are PICS! [:D]

The only way the install would take that long is if it was corner balanced and an alignment was done also. 4-5 hours is the norm.

Wow! I gotta good one going here....
I'm definitely not knocking anyone here (except in my tags!). Bavarian Rocket Scientists are always very busy and frankly their hourly is the same as my dealer. I just originally needed to know if the quote on the time was fair. I'd have them do it if it was, but I'm pretty sure they went WAY over the hours really needed and I won't know why.
Maybe they did it so that when the job came in under I felt like it was a sweet deal? Who knows. Ultimate point taken from this?

Alan at Jack Daniels is terrific..reliable, thoughtful, fair and responsive. He has handled all of the work on my car ( ihave dealt with many dealers over the years:porsche, audi etc, and Alan gets it!) Tell him Eric says hello
