View Full Version : Whistle from timing belt when cold outside!
Hi,
I have a A4 2.0T Quattro 2007, 19000miles on the clock.
The car is parked outside in a carport, temperatures around zero degrees centigrade over the night and in the day. When I start the car in the morning I hear a whizz sound coming from the timing belt/multi-belt. But after a couple om miles it stops. This must be because of the cold and the belt/starp gets cold and hard? When the engine reaches some temperature after a couple of miles the sound disappears. I think because when the engine room gets warm the belt/strap loses up a little and it's all OK.
What do you think? Has anyone experienced anything like this?
PS: The car is connected to an engine/coupe heater and I aways let the car spin for 1-2 minutes before taking of. And no "hard" gas until the car reaches normal temperatures.
Thanks!

I had something like this on my B5 1.8T a few years ago. It wasn't really a whistle, but more of a squeeking. It would go away after a few minutes. It did it for a year or so before I took it to a dealer when it started to take a little longer to go away and started to do it when it was warmer out. It ended up being the timing belt tensioner or idler pulley being "dirty" according to the dealer, but they wouldn't cover it under warranty [headbang]. I ended up just paying to have the timing belt replaced (along with the tensioner and pulleys) and the problem went away. The noise happened somewhere between 60-75k miles on that car.
Interestingly, my B7 had a little squeek yesterday morning when I was scraping ice off the windshield at about 20F. It wasn't very loud or worrying sounding, so I didn't investigate where it was coming from. It only has 11k miles on it, so it better not need a timing belt pulley replaced. I'd argue alot harder to get it covered under warranty if that were the case. [evilmad]

WTF... same thing is happening to me. my car has about 21k. i took mine to the dealership and oddly enough they said it was a water pump, which did not make sense to me. they replaced that, but then a week later (which is now), i'm starting to hear it faintly again. every morning when i warm up the car, and it's only about 50 degrees F over hear in socal, i hear the same squeeking sound.
i or we need feedback on whats going on here.

I've been hearing this too, pretty noticable the last few days, it has been kinda of cold here. It sounds like a squeaky belt, and I know belts do that some times, but should it be doing this at 17000 miles? oh btw its an 08

17k? no.. it most certainly should not... could be a dirty belt or residue or something on the belt assembly making that noise...

I've had that happen. It was turned out to be both the accessory and timing belt rollers. If you hear a chirping sound instead of wizzing, then it's the PCV. I've had that replaced as well..

I went in with a 'squecky' belt at start-up and my dealer replaced teh timing belt/water pump. He sounded as if it's a common thing lately with the belts going pretty early. I had 35K.

My car had the same squeaky noise after a cold start so I had the dealer take a look while it was in for service yesterday. When I picked it up they informed me that it was the timing belt tensioner and that the timing belt was damaged so they replaced it. Thank god for that CPO warranty!

is it like a constant swueak like a belt slipping or is it like a chirp chirp chirp sound (if so its a timeing belt)
I had the same problem and had to get the timing belt and tensioner replaced. A lot of people had this same problem but most around 30k. It started for me around 40k.
